However, Cd concentrations are seldom available but rather predicted using empirical models. The application of amendments such as farm dairy effluent (FDE) to soils which contain dissolved organic carbon (DOC) has the potential to increase cadmium (Cd) leaching through the formation of soluble organo-Cd complexes. Cadmium (Cd) can accumulate in soil from the application of phosphorus fertilizer. However, there is little information on what happens to soil Cd concentrations when Cd inputs stop. This study used soil and pasture samples collected from a long-term field trial to measure changes in Cd concentrations in soil for 22 yr after Cd inputs from fertilizer had stopped and assessed whether the application of nitrogen (N) (50 kg ha  yr ) could increase plant uptake of Cd and reduce soil Cd concentrations.

Cadmium (Cd) transport in overland flow from agricultural soils is potentially important when trying to predict future soil Cd concentrations, but at present there is little information on the magnitude of loss from this pathway. This study measured Cd concentrations and fluxes in overland flow from a catchment where cattle winter-grazed a forage crop (kale) (Brassica oleracea) in year one and measurements continued in year two when the catchment was returned to pasture and grazed by sheep. Fluorescence localization after photobleaching is a new method for localized photolabeling and subsequent tracking of specific molecules within living cells. The molecular species to be located carries two different fluorophores that can be imaged independently but simultaneously by fluorescence microscopy. Isotope dilution methods using a stable isotope tracer ((207)Pb) were developed for the determination of Pb availability in contaminated soils. The methods included determination of E values (isotopically exchangeable pool), L values (plant labile pool) and isotopic exchange kinetics (IEK). As a way to examine the nature of age-related differences in lineup identification accuracy, young (16-33 years) and older (60-82 years) witnesses viewed two similar videotaped incidents, one involving a young perpetrator and the other involving an older perpetrator. The incidents were followed by two separate lineups, one for the younger perpetrator and one for the older perpetrator. When the test delay was short (35 min), the young and older witnesses performed similarly on the lineups, but when the tests were delayed by 1 week, the older witnesses were substantially less accurate.

In contrast to the careful consideration given to the issue of what we can infer from dissociations in single-case studies, the more basic question of how we decide whether a dissociation is present has been relatively neglected. Proposals are made for fully operational definitions of a deficit, classical and strong dissociations, and double dissociations. In developing these definitions it was assumed that they should be based on the use of inferential rather than descriptive statistical methods.

Transformed rat fibroblasts expressing two variants of green fluorescent protein, each fused to beta-actin, were used to study actin dynamics during cell protrusion. The recently developed FLAP (fluorescence localization after photobleaching) method permits the tracking of one fluorophore after localized photobleaching by using the other as a colocalized reference. Here, by visualizing the ratio of bleached to total molecules, we found that actin was delivered to protruding zones of the leading edge of the cell at speeds that exceeded 5 micrometers per second.
