Equity-Focused Interventions Improve Interpreter Use in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Background: Federal guidelines and equitable care mandate that patients who use a language other than English receive interpretation in their preferred language. Substantial variability exists in interpreter use in intensive care settings. We aimed to increase the rate of interpretations in our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) through a series of targeted interventions.

The pH-induced swelling and collapse of a polybase brush synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization.

We have used neutron reflectometry to characterize the swelling behaviour of brushes of poly[2-(diethyl amino)ethyl methacrylate], a polybase, as a function of pH. The brushes, synthesized by the "" method of atom transfer radical polymerization, were observed to approximately double their thickness in low pH solutions, although the p is shifted to a lower pH than in dilute solution. The composition-depth profile obtained from the reflectometry experiments for the swollen brushes reveals a region depleted in polymer between the substrate and the extended part of the brush.

Reciprocating power generation in a chemically driven synthetic muscle.

A scalable synthetic muscle has been constructed that transducts nanoscale molecular shape changes into macroscopic motion. The working material, which deforms affinely in response to a pH stimulus, is a self-assembled block copolymer comprising nanoscopic hydrophobic domains in a weak polyacid matrix. A device has been assembled where the muscle does work on a cantilever and the force generated has been measured.
