The effect of transfusion on survival in head and neck cancer after free tissue reconstruction.

Objective: To examine if perioperative blood transfusion affects overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in head and neck cancer patients who undergo free tissue reconstruction.

Design: Retrospective cohort study.

Methods: The medical records of free tissue flaps between 2007 and 2010 were reviewed.

Differences in Access to Outpatient Care in the State of Ohio for an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Patient.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of either Medicaid or private insurance on securing an appointment in an outpatient orthopaedic clinic and to determine waiting periods until an appointment as well as the relationship between population metrics and access to care.

Methods: A total of 88 clinics were called. There were 2 fictitious patients, one with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and the other with a medial meniscus injury, with each calling as having Medicaid or private insurance.

Effect of Opioid Limiting Legislation on Postoperative Opioid Utilization in Patients Treated for Ankle Fractures.

Background: The state of Ohio implemented legislation in August of 2017 limiting the quantity of opioids a provider could prescribe. The purpose of this study was to identify if implementation of legislation affected opioid and nonopioid utilization in patients operatively treated for ankle fractures in the initial 90-day postoperative period after controlling for injury severity and preoperative narcotic usage.

Methods: A retrospective review of 144 patients treated for isolated ankle fractures in a pre-law group (January 2017-July 2017; n = 73) and post-law group (January 2018-July 2018; n = 71) was completed using electronic medical records and a legal prescriber database.

Polysomnographic Oxygen Saturation Findings for Preteen Children versus Adolescents.

Objective Home oximetry is commonly used to screen for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children; however, normal oxygen desaturation levels by disease severity are not well known. It was our objective to determine if oxygen saturation levels differed by OSA severity category in children and if these differences were similar for preteen children and adolescents. Study Design Retrospective case series of children undergoing polysomnography from September 2011 to July 2015.
