Taurine status and response to intravenous taurine supplementation in adults with short-bowel syndrome undergoing long-term parenteral nutrition: a pilot study.

Taurine deficiency in patients on long-term parenteral nutrition may be involved in cholestasis. We aimed to assess plasma taurine and tauro-conjugated bile acids in adults with short-bowel syndrome and their response to intravenous taurine. Thirty-two adult patients, who had been on taurine-free parenteral nutrition for a mean of 59 (SE 14) months for short-bowel syndrome, were studied retrospectively.

Dose dependency of the effect of ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate on tissue glutamine concentrations and hypercatabolic response in endotoxaemic rats.

The optimal dosage of ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) for repleting tissue glutamine (Gln) concentrations and maintaining N homeostasis after injury is unknown. We set out to perform 'dose-ranging' of OKG supplementation after an endotoxaemic challenge. Sixty-one male Wistar rats were injected with 3 mg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli/kg (n 50) or saline vehicle (9 g NaCl/l; controls n 11).

Isolated perfused liver model: the rat and guinea pig compared.

Objective: Although the rat is the most commonly used species for the study of hepatic metabolism, the physiology of the guinea pig is closer to human physiology. We compared the model of isolated perfused guinea pig liver with the classic model of isolated perfused rat liver, especially with respect to amino acid metabolism.

Methods: After validation of an anesthetic mixture of ketamine, diazepam, and xylazine for the guinea pig, isolated perfused livers were harvested for both species.
