Advances in theoretical understanding are frequently unlocked by access to large, diverse experimental datasets. Our understanding of olfactory neuroscience and psychophysics remain years behind the other senses, in part because rich datasets linking olfactory stimuli with their corresponding percepts, behaviors, and neural pathways remain scarce. Here we present a concerted effort to unlock and unify dozens of stimulus-linked olfactory datasets across species and modalities under a unified framework called Pyrfume.

Seaweeds are widely assumed to be phenotypically plastic across hydrodynamic gradients, yet while many marine macroalgae exhibit intraspecific phenotypic variation that correlates with flow, researchers often fail to test whether such variation is due to plasticity or another mechanism, such as local adaptation. In this minireview, we considered mechanisms for sensing flow in seaweeds that could facilitate adaptive phenotypic plasticity across hydrodynamic gradients. We then reviewed the literature from 1900 to 2024 to see how often phenotypic variation and plasticity across hydrodynamic gradients had been observed and demonstrated in different groups of seaweeds.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is a joint disease that leads to cartilage breakdown, causing pain and restricted movement, and its early diagnosis is crucial but challenging due to vague symptoms.
  • This study used Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) on 86 participants to analyze biomarkers (IL-6, TNF-α, MPO) for classifying OA patients versus healthy volunteers.
  • The findings showed significant differences in MPO and TNF-α levels between the two groups and suggested that DFA can improve OA diagnostics, though larger studies are needed to strengthen these results and integrate DFA into clinical use.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers explored the connection between heavy alcohol use and obesity as midlife risk factors for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), uncovering a link to disrupted lipophagy and lysosomal function.
  • The study found that the loss of lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) in neurons leads to the accumulation of neuronal lysosomal lipids (NLL), which interferes with the clearance of amyloid-beta (Aβ), a key component of Alzheimer's pathology.
  • As LAL levels decline with age in both mice and humans, its reduction is associated with increased Aβ and cognitive deficits, highlighting the importance of maintaining LAL function to potentially mitigate Alzheimer's risk as we age.

Introduction: Soft tissue sarcomas are a group of malignancies that commonly occur in the extremities. As deep lesions may exist within the confines of the muscular fascia, we postulate that local recurrence rates are higher for superficial soft tissue sarcomas managed by the standard of care.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review was performed on 90 patients who underwent surgical resection of soft tissue sarcomas of the extremity from 2007 to 2015.

Recalcitrant nail plate infections can be life-long problems because localizing antifungal agents into infected tissues is problematic. In this systematic review, guided by the SPIDER method, we extracted chemical nail permeation data for 38 compounds from 16 articles, and analyzed the data using quantitative structure-property relationships (QSPRs). Our analysis demonstrated that low-molecular weight was essential for effective nail penetration, with <120 g/mol being preferred.

The complement system is the first line of innate immune defense against microbial infections. To survive in humans and cause infections, bacterial pathogens have developed sophisticated mechanisms to subvert the complement-mediated bactericidal activity. There are reports that sialidases, also known as neuraminidases, are implicated in bacterial complement resistance; however, its underlying molecular mechanism remains elusive.

Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) develops after exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation and features immune suppression and organ failure. Currently, there are no diagnostics to identify the occurrence or severity of exposure and there are limited treatments and preventative strategies to mitigate ARS. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are mediators of intercellular communication that contribute to immune dysfunction across many diseases.

Chronic wounds and their treatment present a significant burden to patients and healthcare systems alike, with their management further complicated by bacterial infection. Historically, antibiotics have been deployed to prevent and treat infections, but the emergence of bacterial antimicrobial resistance and the frequent development of biofilms within the wound area necessitates the identification of novel treatment strategies for use within infected chronic wounds. Here, several non-antibiotic compounds, polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), curcumin, retinol, polysorbate 40, ethanol, and D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate 1000 (TPGS) were screened for their antibacterial and antibiofilm capabilities.
