Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and mental health disorders (MHD) are respectively the first and second most prevalent diseases in high-income countries and the two most relevant causes of disability worldwide. The close association between the two conditions has been known for a long time and research has been able to document how the co-morbidity between cardiovascular disorders and mental health disorders is a negative prognostic factor for both conditions. This strong connection and the relevance of the impact of the association have led to define a new branch of cardiology, known as behavioral cardiology.

Cell-based therapy using insulin-producing cells (IPCs) is anticipated as an alternative treatment option to insulin injection or pancreatic islet transplantation for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in both human and veterinary medicine. Several protocols were reported for the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into IPCs; to date, glucose-responsive IPCs have only been obtained from canine adipose tissue-derived MSCs (c-MSCs), but not from canine bone marrow-derived MSCs (cBM-MSCs). Therefore, this study aims to generate in vitro glucose-responsive IPCs from cBM-MSCs using two differentiation protocols: a two-step protocol using trichostatin (TSA) and a three-step protocol using mercaptoethanol to induce pancreatic and duodenal homeobox gene 1 (PDX-1) expression.

Article Synopsis
  • Canine pheochromocytomas (PCCs) are rare tumors that can cause vague clinical symptoms and can result in complications like catecholamine overproduction and invasion of nearby structures.
  • A 12-year-old dog with chronic kidney disease developed severe neurological signs, leading to the discovery of a malignant adrenal gland tumor that invaded the caudal vena cava, ultimately resulting in euthanasia after emergency treatment efforts failed.
  • This case highlights the importance of recognizing acute hypertensive encephalopathy as a possible manifestation of PCCs and underscores the need for veterinarians to consider PCCs in the diagnosis of dogs presenting with sudden severe neurological issues, especially in the presence of other health problems.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the emotional well-being of adolescents worldwide. Some studies suggested that individuals with high Environmental Sensitivity may have been more likely to experience poor psychological adjustment during the pandemic than those with lower sensitivity. However, there is still limited research on how emotional responses varied across different stages of the pandemic and whether Environmental Sensitivity increased adolescents' vulnerability to the psychological impact of prolonged pandemic restrictions.

While the unique symbiotic relationship between anemonefishes and sea anemones is iconic, it is still not fully understood how anemonefishes can withstand and thrive within the venomous environment of their host sea anemone. In this study, we used a proteotranscriptomics approach to elucidate the proteinaceous toxin repertoire from the most common host sea anemone, . Although 1251 different toxin or toxin-like RNA transcripts were expressed in tentacles (0.

Canine strongyloidosis by Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasitic disease emerging in Europe, which represents both a veterinary clinical issue and a public health challenge because of the zoonotic potential. The disease, not yet frequent in Europe, could induce severe clinical signs in dogs; thus, an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are desirable. The aim of the present work is to retrospectively investigate the clinical and paraclinical findings in sick dogs naturally infected by S.

Advances in technologies to isolate extracellular vesicles (EVs) and detect/quantify their cargo underpin the novel potential of these circulating particles as a liquid biopsy to understand physiology and disease. One organ of particular interest in terms of utilizing EVs as a liquid biopsy is the liver. The extent to which EVs originating from the liver reflect the functional status of this organ remains unknown.

A visible-light-induced iron-catalyzed α-alkylation of ketones with allylic and propargylic alcohols as pro-electrophiles is reported. The diaminocyclopentadienone iron tricarbonyl complex plays a dual role by harvesting light and facilitating dehydrogenation and reduction steps without the help of any exogenous photosensitizer. γ,δ-Unsaturated ketones can now be accessed through this borrowing hydrogen methodology at room temperature.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies highlight Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT's growing importance in diagnosing clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC).
  • An intra-patient comparison of bilateral primary ccRCC revealed a significant difference in uptake intensity between high grade and low grade tumors, both of which were avid for Ga-PSMA-11.
  • The findings suggest that SUVmax measurements on Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT can effectively differentiate between aggressive high grade and less aggressive low grade ccRCC based on varying PSMA expression.

Aims: Hyperkalemia often occurs among heart failure (HF) patients, particularly when treated with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi). Even modest potassium levels variations raise the risk of mortality and prompt patients to discontinue disease-modifying treatment, as RAASi. Novel potassium binders (NPB), patiromer and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate, are effective in reducing potassium levels and are approved for the treatment of hyperkalemia in HF, but whether their use results in a real optimization of HF treatment remains to be seen.

The term "immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs)" refers to several inflammatory pathologies of multifactorial etiology and involving either simultaneously or sequentially more organs. IMIDs share some common pathogenic mechanisms, which account for some similarities in the clinical course and the impact that these diseases may have on other organs and systems of the body. However, there are some differences in the IMID-associated pathological process, including the synthesis and function of multiple inflammatory cytokines, which are supposed to perpetuate the tissue-damaging inflammation.

The first step of oncogenesis is the acquisition of a repertoire of genetic mutations to initiate and sustain the malignancy. An important example of this initiation phase in acute leukemias is the formation of a potent oncogene by chromosomal translocations between the mixed lineage leukemia (MLL) gene and one of 100 translocation partners, known as the MLL recombinome. Here, we show that circular RNAs (circRNAs)-a family of covalently closed, alternatively spliced RNA molecules-are enriched within the MLL recombinome and can bind DNA, forming circRNA:DNA hybrids (circR loops) at their cognate loci.

BACKGROUND Differential diagnosis between athlete's heart and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is sometimes challenging in sport cardiology since endurance training can cause a distinct pattern of functional and structural changes of the cardiovascular system. It is of crucial importance to accurately diagnose it and stratify the arrhythmic risk since hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is one of the leading causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. Apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a relatively rare form of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy that predominantly affects the apex of the left ventricle and usually has a nonobstructive physiology.
