Learning results in various forms of neuronal plasticity that provide a lasting representation of past events, and understanding the mechanisms supporting lasting memories has been a primary pursuit of the neurobiological study of memory. However, learning also alters the capacity for future learning, an observation that likely reflects its adaptive significance. In the laboratory, we can study this essential property of memory by assessing how prior experience alters the capacity for subsequent learning.

Though they are rare in nature, anthropogenic 1,3,5-triazines have been used in herbicides as chemically stable scaffolds. Here, we show that small 1,3,5-triazines selectively target ascorbate peroxidases (APXs) in Arabidopsis (), tomato (), rice (), maize (), liverwort (), and other plant species. The alkyne-tagged 2-chloro-4-methyl-1,3,5-triazine probe KSC-3 selectively binds APX enzymes, both in crude extracts and in living cells.

Aptamers are small, functional nucleic acids that bind a variety of targets, often with high specificity and affinity. Genomic aptamers constitute the ligand-binding domains of riboswitches, whereas synthetic aptamers find applications as diagnostic and therapeutic tools, and as ligand-binding domains of regulatory RNAs in synthetic biology. Discovery and characterization of aptamers has been limited by a lack of high-throughput approaches that uncover the target-binding domains and the biochemical properties of individual sequences.

The objective of this study was to identify potential false-positive urine Legionella pneumophila (Legionella) enzyme immunoassay test results. A total of 107 consecutive patients with positive EIA tests were retrospectively analyzed over a 34-month period. Concurrent blood, urine, and sputum cultures, as well as chest radiographic findings, were reviewed in these patients.

Background The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Reference Material RM 8366 was developed to improve the quality of gene copy measurements of EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) and MET (proto-oncogene, receptor tyrosine kinase), important targets for cancer diagnostics and treatment. The reference material is composed of genomic DNA prepared from six human cancer cell lines with different levels of amplification of the target genes. Patients with primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) are potentially cured by allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The spectrum of PIDs has expanded greatly beyond those that present in infancy or are diagnosed on newborn screening and require urgent, preemptive HCT. Many PID diagnoses are now made later in life, and the role of HCT is only considered for severe disease manifestations; in these cases, the kinetics and goals of a donor search may be different than for severe combined immunodeficiency.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to characterize the effect of rifampin incorporation into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement. While incompatibilities between the two materials have been previously noted, we sought to identify and quantify the cause of rifampin's effects, including alterations in curing properties, mechanical strength, and residual monomer content.

Contactless sample confinement would enable a whole host of new studies in developmental biology and neuroscience, in particular, when combined with long-term, wide-field optical imaging. To achieve this goal, we demonstrate a contactless acoustic gradient force trap for sample confinement in light sheet microscopy. Our approach allows the integration of real-time environmentally controlled experiments with wide-field low photo-toxic imaging, which we demonstrate on a variety of marine animal embryos and larvae.

This study examined motor skill learning using a weight-bearing and cognitive-motor dual-task that incorporated unexpected perturbations and measurements of cognitive function. This study documents changes in gonadal structure for the serial hermaphrodite (or bidirectional sex changer) divine dwarfgoby Eviota epiphanes (family Gobiidae) as individuals transition in both directions. To evaluate transitional gonad morphology, individuals actively producing the same gamete type (oocytes or sperm) were set up into pairs and euthanised over a period of 14 days to get a time series of morphological changes during gonad transformation. Results from this study show that rapid changes in the gonad take place at a structural level as individuals change their reproductive function and gamete production.
