Light pollution disrupts the natural dark-light rhythmicity of the world and alters the spectral composition of the nocturnal sky, with far-reaching impacts on natural systems. While the costs of light pollution are now documented across scales and taxa, community-level mitigations for arthropods remain unclear. To test two light pollution mitigation strategies, we replaced all 32 streetlights in the largest visitor center in Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming, USA) to allow wireless control over each luminaries' color and brightness.

Injuries associated with contemporary life, such as automobile crashes and sports injuries, can lead to large numbers of traumatic neuromuscular injuries that are intimately associated with bone fractures. Regulatory and non-coding RNAs play essential roles in multiple cellular processes, including osteogenic differentiation and bone healing. In this review, we discuss the most recent advances in our understanding of the regulatory and non-coding RNA biology of osteogenic differentiation in stem, stromal and progenitor cells.

Exploring the availability and accessibility of menstrual friendly public toilets (MFPTs) in urban spaces: A global multi-city audit study.

Background: Public toilets enable populations, including those who menstruate, to move through public spaces. Menstrual Friendly Public Toilets (MFPT) are accessible, safe, and clean public toilets that provide those who menstruate the space and resources to navigate cities with dignity and comfort. However, there is little evidence on the status of MFPTs in urban centers.

Craters on the melanoma surface facilitate tumor-immune interactions and demonstrate pathologic response to checkpoint blockade in humans.

Immunotherapy leads to cancer eradication despite the tumor's immunosuppressive environment. Here, we used extended long-term in-vivo imaging and high-resolution spatial transcriptomics of endogenous melanoma in zebrafish, and multiplex imaging of human melanoma, to identify domains that facilitate immune response during immunotherapy. We identified crater-shaped pockets at the margins of zebrafish and human melanoma, rich with beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) and antigen recognition molecules.

National Park visitors perceive benefits for themselves and wildlife under blended red-white outdoor lighting.

Visitors to Colter Bay Village in Grand Teton National Park were surveyed to elicit their evaluations of experimental outdoor lighting conditions. Luminaires capable of dimming and switching between two LED modules (white, blended red-white) were installed in street and parking areas. The blended red-white lamps consisted of 30 narrowband LED with a peak wavelength 623 nm and two 3000 K white LEDs.

Reliability of Wearable Technology to Monitor Core Temperature Among Helicopter-Based EMS Crews.

Background: Excessive heat stress led to more than 400 deaths in the United States from 2011 to 2021. Common methods for heat injury prevention revolve around measurements of the environment and fail to account for the unique individual response to stressors.

Methods: An observational approach was utilized with nine helicopter-based emergency medical services personnel during emergency flights to compare core temperature readings obtained from an ingestible temperature monitoring pill and the estimated core temperature reading of the Slate Safety Band V2 wearable device.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Neuropsychological and Emotional-Behavioural Development in a Group of 8- and 9-Year-Old Children.

: The rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the psychological well-being of millions of people around the world, and even more so among children. Contracting SARS-CoV-2, resulting in home confinement and restrictions on daily and school activities, led to negative effects on the mental health of the paediatric population. Although children suffering from COVID-19 had milder general symptoms compared to adults, impairments in cognitive, neuropsychological, and emotional-behavioural development were noted.

Empowering nursing students through inclusivity training for LGBTQIA+ patients: A quasi-experimental study.

Background: The current state of nursing education is concerning, with nearly two-thirds of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) -accredited universities reporting that their nursing graduates are ill-prepared to care for the LGBTQIA+ community (Eickhoff, 2021). This lack of training is alarming, given the ongoing reports of LGBTQIA+ healthcare discrimination and the insufficient knowledge of nursing faculty to guide future nurses in caring for this patient population (Hughes et al., 2022).

The Pathway to Developing a Competency-based Tool for Entry-level Nursing Simulation: A Delphi Study.

Background: Simulation-based learning experiences allow undergraduate nursing students to develop competence and confidence through deliberate practice with immediate feedback on the learner's performance through debriefing. With the transition to competency-based nursing education, nursing faculty need more guidance in implementing competency-based evaluations in the simulation setting.

Purpose: This Delphi study aims to inform the future development of a competency-based tool - SimComp - based on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials.

Exploring ownership of change and health equity implications in neighborhood change processes: A community-led approach to enhancing just climate resilience in Everett, MA.

Traditional planning processes have perpetuated the exclusion of historically marginalized communities, imposing vulnerability to climate (health) crises. We investigate how ownership of change fosters equitable climate resilience and community well-being through participatory action research. Our study highlights the detrimental effects of climate gentrification on community advocacy for climate security and health, negatively impacting well-being.

Women in leadership matters: Achieving diversity in radiology residency recruitment.

Rationale And Objectives: To assess whether academic radiology departments and residency programs with efforts toward supporting and augmenting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are associated with a higher proportion of residents from diverse backgrounds.

Materials And Methods: Program Directors within the Radiology Residency Education Research Alliance were surveyed to gather information about program characteristics, incorporation of diversity in resident recruitment, the sponsoring department's commitment to efforts at expanding diversity, and a summary of their current and past residents, staff and faculty members (academic years 2020 and 2023) with respect to a list of diversity characteristics.

Results: Survey response rate was 51 %.

Ru(II) Oligothienyl Complexes with Fluorinated Ligands: Photophysical, Electrochemical, and Photobiological Properties.

A series of Ru(II) complexes incorporating two 4,4'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (4,4'-btfmb) coligands and thienyl-appended imidazo[4,5-][1,10]phenanthroline (IP-T) ligands was characterized and assessed for phototherapy effects toward cancer cells. The [Ru(4,4'-btfmb)(IP-T)] scaffold has greater overall redox activity compared to Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes such as [Ru(bpy)]. - have additional oxidations due to the T group and additional reductions due to the 4,4'-btfmb ligands.

High grade adverse event reporting and enrolment in gynecologic oncology clinical trials.

Objective: The primary objective is to assess factors associated with treatment related high grade (CTCAE grade ≥ 3) adverse event (AE) reporting among participants in gynecologic oncology clinical trials.

Methods: All AEs recorded in the Princess Margaret Clinical Trial adverse event database between 01/2016 and 12/2018 were evaluated. Gynecologic oncology clinical trials assessing systemic therapy were included.

Ru(II) Phenanthroline-Based Oligothienyl Complexes as Phototherapy Agents.

Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes have gained widespread attention as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Herein, we systematically investigate a series of the type [Ru(phen)(IP-T)], featuring 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) coligands and imidazo[4,5-][1,10]phenanthroline ligands tethered to 0-4 thiophene rings (IP-T). The complexes were characterized and investigated for their electrochemical, spectroscopic, and (photo)biological properties.

The psychophysiology of Mastermind: Characterizing response times and blinking in a high-stakes television game show.

Television game shows have proven to be a valuable resource for studying human behavior under conditions of high stress and high stakes. However, previous work has focused mostly on choices-ignoring much of the rich visual information that is available on screen. Here, we take a first step to extracting more of this information by investigating the response times and blinking of contestants in the BBC show Mastermind.

Specific autobiographical memories are a resource for identity strength among mature but not emerging adults.

Four studies, three pre-planned on Open Science Framework, with 2296 participants explored the potential role of recollecting autobiographical memories in enhancing the sense of identity. Among emerging adults (college students under age 25), recollecting important autobiographical memories did not strengthen sense of identity. Autobiographical memories failed to strengthen identity among emerging adults despite inducing low self-clarity first; despite attempts to prime self-consistent memories by having emerging adults report their stable self-aspects first; and despite attempts to inspire self-event connections by asking emerging adults to explain how the memories exemplified something enduring about the self.

Effects of spike proteins on angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2).

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which enters host cells through interactions of its spike protein to Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2). ACE2 is a peptidase that cleaves Angiotensin II, a critical pathological mediator. This study investigated if the spike protein binding to ACE2 compromises its peptidase activity.

Examining the use of geriatric standardized patients with baccalaureate nursing students.

The need for clinical placements for undergraduate nursing programs heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic as nursing schools across the country faced restrictions with the high-risk geriatric client population. Nursing students experienced increased anxiety levels, decreased learning opportunities, and uncertainties about the decision to enter the workforce as healthcare professionals. In turn, this amplified the need for faculty support and feedback imperative for student success.

"The trauma machine expands faster than our services": Health risks for unhoused people in an early-stage gentrifying area.

While homelessness continues to be a prevalent problem throughout the United States, many urban neighborhoods are also concurrently experiencing an influx of affluent neighbors through gentrification, exposing the stark inequalities in housing access nationwide. Gentrification-induced changes in neighborhood dynamics have also been shown to affect the health of low-income and non-white groups, with high risks of trauma from displacement and exposure to violent crime and criminalization. This study addresses risk factors for health among the most vulnerable, unhoused individuals, and provides a detailed case study on the potential exposures to emotional and physical traumas for unhoused people in early-stage gentrifying areas.
