Fipronil is a highly effective insecticide with extensive usages; however, its distribution and toxic/health effects in the human population after chronic exposure have not yet been clearly identified. Our objectives were to determine the levels of serum fipronil and fipronil sulfone, a primary fipronil metabolite, in a general and sensitive human population using a birth cohort of parent-infant triads in Korea. We further investigated whether in utero exposure to fipronil and fipronil sulfone can affect health outcomes in newborn infants.

Although media exposure has emerged as a significant predictor of consumers' sexual decision making, less is known about the mechanisms involved and about the dynamics of these relations for adults, in general, and for African American adults, in particular. To address these gaps, we used structural equation modeling (SEM) to test whether heterosexual Black women's endorsement of traditional gender and sexual roles mediates connections between their consumption of four mainstream media (music videos, reality TV programming, movies, and women's magazines) and three dimensions of their sexual well-being (sexual assertiveness, sexual inhibition, and sexual deception). We surveyed 594 heterosexual Black women aged 17 to 55 who were undergraduate and graduate students at two universities (one historically Black university and one predominantly White institution).

LINE-1 hypomethylation is associated with radiation-induced genomic instability in industrial radiographers.

Global DNA hypomethylation is proposed as a potential biomarker for cancer risk associated with genomic instability, which is an important factor in radiation-induced cancer. However, the associations among radiation exposure, changes in DNA methylation, and carcinogenesis are unclear. The aims of this study were (1) to examine whether low-level occupational radiation exposure induces genomic DNA hypomethylation; and (2) to determine the relationships between radiation exposure, genomic DNA hypomethylation and radiation-induced genomic instability (RIGI) in industrial radiographers.

The mentalizing system and mirror system are thought to play important roles in inferring the internal mental states of others - a process known as mentalizing. Autism spectrum condition (ASC) is associated with difficulties in mentalizing. The aim of this study was to determine whether the behavioural difficulties in mentalizing associated with ASC can be explained by changes in functional connectivity between the mentalizing and mirror system.

The spread of non-native aquatic species among waterbodies has become a major social, environmental, and economic concern. An important mechanism of this spread is the inadvertent transport of organisms on recreational boats as they are moved among waterbodies. Organisms can survive on the exterior of the boat, the interior, attached to fishing tackle, and can be intentionally moved by boaters.

Female Genital Cutting: Clinical knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices from a Provider survey in the US.

Migration from countries where female genital cutting (FGC) is practiced means women's healthcare providers need to meet this population's unique healthcare needs. We explored providers' FGC-related experience, knowledge of the cultural practice, prior training, attitudes towards medicalization, including reinfibulation, and clinical practice. An online, 53-question survey to a multidisciplinary sample of women's health providers in the US were recruited by email via professional organizations, medical departments, and the authors' professional networks.

Objectives: To improve the recognition of differences in presentation amongst patients with type 1 laryngeal clefts of various ages and better understand the age dependent outcomes of injection laryngoplasty. A second aim was to analyze the discrepancies between swallow assessment modalities in various age groups with type I laryngeal clefts undergoing injection laryngoplasty.

Methods: A retrospective review of electronic medical records of patients who underwent injection laryngoplasty from 2009 through 2015 at a tertiary care children's hospital.

Functional inclusivity of trauma networks: a pilot study of the North West London Trauma Network.

Background: Metrics exist to assess and validate trauma system outcomes; however, these are clinically focused and do not evaluate the appropriateness of admission patterns, relative to geography and triage category. We propose the term "functional inclusivity", defined as the number and proportion of triage-negative, and/or nonseverely injured patients, who were injured in proximity to a level II/III trauma center but admitted to a level I facility. The aim of this study was to evaluate this metric in the North West London Trauma Network.

Personality shapes pair bonding in a wild bird social system.

Mated pair bonds are integral to many animal societies, yet how individual variation in behaviour influences their formation remains largely unknown. In a population of wild great tits (Parus major), we show that personality shapes pair bonding: proactive males formed stronger pre-breeding pair bonds by meeting their future partners sooner and increasing their relationship strength at a faster rate. As a result, proactive males sampled fewer potential mates.

Background: The Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) recently developed 3 quality measures for prescribing opioids: high dosages, multiple providers and pharmacies, and concurrent use of opioids and benzodiazepines.

Objective: To examine the prevalence of the PQA measures and identify the patient demographic and health characteristics associated with the measures.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using Pennsylvania Medicaid data (2013-2015).

Assessing object-recognition memory in rats: Pitfalls of the existent tasks and the advantages of a new test.

Studies of object-recognition memory in lab rats began in the late 1980s, using variants of the trial-unique delayed nonmatching-to-sample (DNMS) task. By the end of the 20th century, most investigators who wanted to study object-recognition in rodents had abandoned the DNMS task in favor of the novel-object-preference (NOP) test, mainly because the latter test is relatively easy to employ, whereas conventional DNMS tasks are not. Some concerns have been raised, however, about the internal validity of the NOP test as a method of measuring object-recognition abilities.

Systemic immunosuppression in limbal stem cell transplantation: best practices and future challenges.

The objective of this study was to evaluate systemic immunosuppression regimens used for patients undergoing ocular surface stem cell transplantation, including their benefits and adverse effects in the adjunctive management of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). A systematic literature review was conducted using the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases (1980-2015). Data were collected on surgical intervention(s), type of immunosuppressive agent(s), duration of immunosuppression, percentage with stable ocular surface at last follow-up, mean follow-up time, and demographics.

Evaluating the ability of a trauma team activation tool to identify severe injury: a multicentre cohort study.

Background: Sensitive decision making tools should assist prehospital personnel in the triage of injured patients, identifying those who require immediate lifesaving interventions and safely reducing unnecessary under- and overtriage. In 2014 a new trauma team activation (TTA) tool was implemented in Central Norway. The overall objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of the new TTA tool to identify severe injury.

Purpose: To compare the sensitivity of detection and the measured size of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) on two commercially available spectral domain optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) devices, the Optovue RTVue XR Avanti with AngioVue and the Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT with AngioPlex.

Methods: Patients with CNV lesions were imaged consecutively on both OCTA devices on the same day of their visit. 3 × 3 mm and 6 × 6 mm scans centered at the fovea were obtained.

Use of stochastic patch occupancy models in the California red-legged frog for Bayesian inference regarding past events and future persistence.

Assessing causes of population decline is critically important to management of threatened species. Stochastic patch occupancy models (SPOMs) are popular tools for examining spatial and temporal dynamics of populations when presence-absence data in multiple habitat patches are available. We developed a Bayesian Markov chain method that extends existing SPOMs by focusing on past environmental changes that may have altered occupancy patterns prior to the beginning of data collection.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has revolutionized diagnosis and prognosis of ophthalmic diseases by visualization and measurement of retinal layers. To speed up the quantitative analysis of disease biomarkers, an increasing number of automatic segmentation algorithms have been proposed to estimate the boundary locations of retinal layers. While the performance of these algorithms has significantly improved in recent years, a critical question to ask is how far we are from a theoretical limit to OCT segmentation performance.

Direct Primary Care: Applying Theory to Potential Changes in Delivery and Outcomes.

Direct Primary Care (DPC), where patients pay a fee to a primary care provider to obtain access to services, is a delivery model that has received notable attention and enthusiasm from some providers. Proponents of DPC believe that the model increases accessibility, reduces overhead, and ultimately improves care for patients; however, there is little evidence in the peer-reviewed literature to support these claims. The objective of this analysis was to apply Starfield's adaptation of Donabedian's Structure-Process-Outcome conceptual model to evaluate primary care to formally display the links between potential changes in clinical structure and processes from DPC adoption.
