Available data on radiologists' missed cervical spine fractures are based primarily on studies using human reviewers to identify errors on re-evaluation; such studies do not capture the full extent of missed fractures. To use machine-learning (ML) models to identify cervical spine fractures on CT missed by interpreting radiologists, characterize the nature of these fractures, and assess their clinical significance. This retrospective study included all cervical spine CT examinations performed in adult patients in the emergency department between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2022.

Neuroblastoma shows the highest lethality in childhood and has poor prognosis at high grade. Our objectives included determining how retinoic acid affected the growth of neuroblastoma cells and the relationship between chemicals unique to neurons and cell death processes like apoptosis and mitophagy. The 50% inhibitory concentration of retinoic acid on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells was determined at the 24th, 48th and 72nd hours.

Optic neuritis (ON), an inflammatory optic neuropathy, is among the most common causes of visual loss. In its initial clinical appearance, ON may have unilateral or bilateral presentation, and anterior (papillitis) or retrobulbar localization. Traditionally, cases are divided into typical and atypical ON.

Chronic pain is a pervasive, disabling, and understudied feature of multiple sclerosis (MS), a progressive demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease. Current focus on motor components of MS disability combined with difficulties assessing pain symptoms present a challenge for the evaluation and management of pain in MS, highlighting the need for novel methods of assessment of neural signatures of chronic pain in MS. We investigate chronic pain in MS using MS-related trigeminal neuralgia (MS-TN) as a model condition focusing on gray matter structures as predictors of chronic pain.

Article Synopsis
  • PIWI-Interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that help regulate gene expression by silencing transposons and degrading mRNA, which is critical for controlling cancer cell behavior.
  • The study focused on inhibiting two specific piRNAs (piR-651 and piR-823) in triple-negative breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) and assessing the impact on healthy human vascular cells (HUVEC).
  • Findings showed that blocking piR-651 and piR-823 significantly reduced cancer cell motility and invasion, while having minimal effects on healthy cells, indicating their potential for use in targeted cancer therapies.

Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondria play a crucial role in early embryo development by providing energy through mitochondrial DNA, particularly during the transition from oocyte to embryo.
  • This study compared the expression of specific genes related to mitophagy and apoptosis in the culture fluids of embryos from different patient groups, including those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and varying ovarian reserves.
  • The findings suggest that analyzing the gene expressions in embryo culture fluids can offer insights into mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular health in female infertility without invasive procedures.

Virtual reality training (VRT), a fun, inexpensive and accessible technology, has the potential to improve activities of daily living (ADL) and functional status in older adults. The potential impact of VRT can be increased through group-based training. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of group- based VRT on ADL and functional outcomes in older adults over 65 years of age.

Purpose To evaluate the performance of the winning machine learning models from the 2023 RSNA Abdominal Trauma Detection AI Challenge. Materials and Methods The competition was hosted on Kaggle and took place between July 26 and October 15, 2023. The multicenter competition dataset consisted of 4274 abdominal trauma CT scans, in which solid organs (liver, spleen, and kidneys) were annotated as healthy, low-grade, or high-grade injury.

Purpose To evaluate the performance of the top models from the RSNA 2022 Cervical Spine Fracture Detection challenge on a clinical test dataset of both noncontrast and contrast-enhanced CT scans acquired at a level I trauma center. Materials and Methods Seven top-performing models in the RSNA 2022 Cervical Spine Fracture Detection challenge were retrospectively evaluated on a clinical test set of 1828 CT scans (from 1829 series: 130 positive for fracture, 1699 negative for fracture; 1308 noncontrast, 521 contrast enhanced) from 1779 patients (mean age, 55.8 years ± 22.

  • Mucosal melanomas, particularly in the oral and sinonasal regions, present diagnostic challenges due to their varied characteristics and differentiation patterns, including neuroendocrine features.
  • A study of 18 cases revealed that 72.2% displayed neuroendocrine differentiation, suggesting it is a common feature in these types of melanoma.
  • The research highlights the importance of recognizing neuroendocrine markers (like synaptophysin, chromogranin, CD56, and INSM-1) in preventing misdiagnoses in malignant melanomas.

Purpose: Altered corneal biomechanics in patients with diabetes may affect intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements. Although a relationship between IOP and glucose levels has been reported in diabetic and nondiabetic patients, the mechanism by which hyperglycemia influences IOP is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of hyperglycemia on IOP, corneal biomechanics, and anterior segment parameters during the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in nondiabetic patients.

Objectives: Cribriform glands are linked to poorer outcomes in prostate adenocarcinoma. We aimed to assess the prognostic role of the percentage of cribriform glands and the size of the largest invasive cribriform gland in Gleason score 7 prostate adenocarcinomas.

Methods: The presence, percentage, and size of the invasive cribriform glands were investigated and their association with prognostic factors were assessed in 177 Grade Groups 2 and 3 prostate adenocarcinomas.

Background: Although plateletpheresis donation is commonly accepted as a safe procedure, its influence on platelet function, coagulation system and fibrinolysis is not completely elucidated.

Objectives: In this study, we tried to assess the effects of plateletpheresis on donor's hemostasis system by measuring platelet activation, development of platelet-leukocyte aggregates, and coagulation activation.

Study Design: Prospective observational study.

The distinct optical properties and electronic structures of two-dimensional colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) have garnered significant scientific and practical interest. However, concerns regarding the toxicity of cadmium-based NPLs and their limited spectral coverage show the importance of developing nontoxic alternatives. In this study, we devised a new synthetic approach for the direct synthesis of zinc-blende (ZB) ZnSe NPLs.

Background: Stress-related diseases are on the rise and stress is one of the common factors that lead to ulcer. Stress-induced mucosal bleeding is a serious complication observed in many critically ill patients. Due to the harmful side effects of proton pump inhibitors, natural and active alternative treatment methods for peptic ulcer treatment that are safe in terms of side effects are an urgent need for human health.

Humor can contribute to nursing practices for relieving pain and anxiety in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) during intravenous (IV) biologic treatment. This study used a prospective, randomized controlled study design to investigate the effect of humor on pain and state anxiety in patients with RA receiving IV infusion therapy. Two sample groups were formed: the intervention group (watching a comedy movie) (n = 18) and the control group (usual care) (n = 18).

  • This study compares two surgical methods, Hartmann's procedure (HP) and resection with primary anastomosis (RPA), for treating acute left-sided colonic emergencies among 1215 patients from 204 centers globally.
  • Results showed that while HP was the more common treatment (57.3%), RPA was favored for younger patients with fewer health issues and those needing surgery sooner.
  • The study concluded that although HP is still widely used, RPA might be the better option, emphasizing the importance of patient characteristics and surgeon experience in determining treatment choice.
