Patients with chronic renal failure are at increased risk for infections because of impaired cellular immunity. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Legionella pneumophila serogroups 1 to 6 and to evaluate the possible risk factors for Legionnaires' disease in hemodialysis patients. Article Synopsis
  • This case study discusses a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia who developed bacteremia due to Brevibacterium species, a type of coryneform bacteria.
  • If coryneform bacteria are found in sterile sites of the body, they require thorough evaluation, particularly in patients with weakened immune systems.
  • The findings suggest that Brevibacterium species should be taken seriously as possible pathogens in immunocompromised individuals.

Twenty multidrug-resistant vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium strains of the VanA phenotype were isolated over a 1 year period from five patients in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Antalya, Turkey. Molecular investigation showed that these strains belonged to five different pulsotypes and that the vanA gene was carried by a Tn1546-like transposon inserted onto a self-transferable plasmid of approximately 200 kb. One patient was infected by two different strains, suggesting horizontal gene transfer within that patient.

Infectious etiology has been confirmed only in a few lymphoproliferative disorders such as human T-cell lymphotropic virus in adult T-cell leukemia lymphoma, Epstein-Barr virus in African-type Burkitt's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease, and Helicobacter pylori infection in primary gastric B-cell lymphoma. In recent years, Ferri and colleagues have found hepatitis C virus (HCV) association with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in Italy. The aim of our study was to determine the HCV association in NHL patients in Antalya.
