The biosynthesis of dopamine (DA) from L-tyrosine as starting material is an excellent yet challenging strategy. Here we developed a versatile, multi-enzymatic platform for the biocatalytic preparation of DA in a continuous mode with excellent conversion (90 %) and reaction time (45 min). The system exploits the immobilization of a decarboxylase from Bacillus pumilis (Fdc) and a tyrosinase from Agaricus bisporus (Tyr), which were combined to mimic the in-vivo synthesis of DA (both primary and secondary metabolisms) giving rise to an efficient strategy with a considerable reduction of process associated costs and environmental impact.

The development of a resilient society is a major challenge for growing human population faced with abundant natural hazards. During and after the May 22, 2021 eruption of Nyiragongo, the local population was surprised and scared by the subsequent seismicity and associated surface fracturing, coupled with the alert of a possible new eruptive vent opening in Goma (Democratic Republic of Congo) and/or Gisenyi (Rwanda). This paper combines solar photovoltaic (PV) to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). A new methodology is proposed to design solar PV to reduce energy consumptions of aeration thanks in WWTPs. New analytical equations and parameters, based on the air temperatures, solar irradiations, biological kinetics, dissolved oxygens, mechanical oxygenations, are introduced to obtain the peak power of PV that maximize the auto-consumptions of aeration blowers installed in the oxidation tanks of WWTPs.

Dredged sediments contaminated by heavy metals and PAHs were subjected to both unenhanced and enhanced electrokinetic remediation under different operating conditions, obtained by varying the applied voltage and the type of conditioning agent used at the electrode compartments in individual experiments. While metals were not appreciably mobilized as a result of the unenhanced process, metal removal was found to be significantly improved when both the anodic and cathodic reservoirs were conditioned with the chelating agent EDTA, with removal yields ranging from 28% to 84% depending on the contaminant concerned. As for the effect on organic contaminants, under the conditions tested the electrokinetic treatment displayed a poor removal capacity towards PAHs, even when a surfactant (Tween 80) was used to promote contaminant mobilization, indicating the need for further investigation on this issue.

Clinical and epidemiologic research has focused on the identification of risk factors that may be modified in predementia syndromes, at a preclinical and early clinical stage of dementing disorders, with specific attention to the role of depression. Our goal was to provide an overview of these studies and more specifically to describe the prevalence and incidence of depression in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the possible impact of depressive symptoms on incident MCI, or its progression to dementia and the possible mechanisms behind the observed associations. An increasing body of epidemiological evidence suggests that elevated saturated fatty acids (SFA) could have negative effects on age-related cognitive decline (ARCD). Furthermore, a reduction of risk for cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has been found in population samples with elevated fish consumption, and high intake of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly n-3 PUFA. However, recent findings from clinical trials with n-3 PUFA supplementation showed efficacy on depressive symptoms in non-apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon4 carriers, and on cognitive symptoms only in very mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) subgroups, MCI patients, and cognitively unimpaired non-APOE epsilon4 carriers.
