The novel corona virus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the disease it causes, COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease-2019) have had multi-faceted effects on a number of lives on a global scale both directly and indirectly. A growing body of evidence suggest that COVID-19 patients experience several oral health problems such as dry mouth, mucosal blistering, mouth rash, lip necrosis, and loss of taste and smell. Periodontal disease (PD), a severe inflammatory gum disease, may worsen the symptoms associated with COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • Research identified 463 genomic features linked to glucocorticoid resistance in acute lymphoblastic leukemia using a comprehensive analysis of mRNA, miRNA, and other genetic factors.
  • A total of 118 overlapping genes were found, including 30 out of 38 known glucocorticoid-resistance genes, along with 14 new genes connected to resistance.
  • The study highlighted CELSR2 as a significant player in glucocorticoid resistance, leading to the discovery of a potential new drug combination that could combat resistance in leukemia treatments.

This randomized clinical trial ( www.clinicaltrials.gov ID# NCT02276534) examined the impact of a peer-mediated, theater-based social skills intervention, SENSE Theater®, on social cognition and behavior in 77 youth (ages 8-16) with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder.

G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) heterodimerization has emerged as a means by which alternative signaling entities can be created; yet, how receptor heterodimers affect receptor pharmacology remains unknown. Previous observations suggested a biochemical antagonism between GPCRs, CXCR4 and CB2 (CNR2), where agonist-bound CXCR4 and agonist-bound CB2 formed a physiologically nonfunctional heterodimer on the membrane of cancer cells, inhibiting their metastatic potential However, the reduced signaling entities responsible for the observed functional outputs remain elusive. This study now delineates the signaling mechanism whereby heterodimeric association between CXCR4 and CB2, induced by simultaneous agonist treatment, results in decreased CXCR4-mediated cell migration, invasion, and adhesion through inhibition of the Gα13/RhoA signaling axis.

The G-protein-coupled chemokine receptor CXCR4 generates signals that lead to cell migration, cell proliferation, and other survival mechanisms that result in the metastatic spread of primary tumor cells to distal organs. Numerous studies have demonstrated that CXCR4 can form homodimers or can heterodimerize with other G-protein-coupled receptors to form receptor complexes that can amplify or decrease the signaling capacity of each individual receptor. Using biophysical and biochemical approaches, we found that CXCR4 can form an induced heterodimer with cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2) in human breast and prostate cancer cells.

Social housing has often been recommended as one-way to address the psychological well-being of captive non-human primates. Published reports have examined methods to socialize compatible animals by forming pairs or groups. Successful socialization rates vary depending on the species, gender, and environment.

The efficacy of a peer-mediated, theatre-based intervention on social competence in participants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was tested. Thirty 8-to-14 year-olds with ASD were randomly assigned to the treatment (n = 17) or a wait-list control (n = 13) group. Immediately after treatment, group effects were seen on social ability, (d = .

Social Emotional NeuroScience Endocrinology Theatre is a novel intervention program aimed at improving reciprocal social interaction in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using behavioral strategies and theatrical techniques in a peer-mediated model. Previous research using a 3-month model showed improvement in face perception, social interaction, and reductions in stress. The current study assessed a 2-week summer camp model.

We employ a comparative phylogenetic analysis to gain insight into the recent evolutionary history of Macaca fascicularis, the long-tailed macaque. Mitochondrial and Y-chromosomal topologies both show that, in general, the deepest intraspecific bifurcations separate Indochinese and Sundaic forms of this species. Sumatran populations, however, are an exception: they carry one Y-chromosomal lineage that clusters with continental populations, and another that clusters with insular stocks.

Anemia has long been reported to adversely affect the efficacy of radiation treatment in cervical cancer. On the basis of these findings, many radiation oncologists routinely use blood transfusions with the intent to maintain hemoglobin above specified levels during radiation therapy. However, allogeneic blood transfusions have been previously linked with biological and clinical phenomena correlated with immune suppression.

We describe a 65-year-old woman with a large surgically unresectable and chemoresistant liver metastasis of endometrial carcinoma who was treated by infusion with peripheral blood T cells stimulated with tumor lysate-pulsed autologous dendritic cells (DC). Extensive in vitro characterization of the DC-activated T cells included phenotypic analysis, cytotoxicity, and intracellular cytokine secretion. High cytotoxicity was observed against autologous tumor cells, but not against NK-sensitive K562 cells, autologous Con-A lymphoblasts, or autologous Epstein-Barr virus-transformed lymphoblastoid cells.

Limited data are available concerning the outcome of patients with atypical and malignant meningiomas. We therefore analyzed the outcome of seventeen patients with meningiomas (9 atypical; 8 malignant) at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital between 1973 and 1996. Strict adherence to the 1993 WHO criteria for the typing of CNS tumors was maintained.

Objective: We describe our initial experience with fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) for the treatment of 19 patients with secretory and nonsecretory pituitary macroadenomas. The primary endpoints of local control and the documentation of any MRI T2-weighted changes in contiguous brain tissues are discussed.

Methods: Between 1/95 and 1/97, 19 patients were planned with the X-Knife 3-D planning system (Radionics, Burlington, Mass.
