We studied the cases of twenty-one patients with the syndrome of thrombocytopenia and absent radius. Patients with this syndrome usually have associated intra-articular dysplasia of the knee joint bilaterally, causing genu varum and a flexion and torsional deformity that become manifest in the first or second year of life. Usually there is progression of the deformities during growth and therefore treatment with braces or operations, or both, will frequently be needed.

Four different isolates of Aleutian disease virus have been compared electrophoretically and serologically. These were the DK and Utah 1 isolates, known as highly virulent strains, the Pullman isolate, known as a low virulent strain and the avirulent ADV-G isolate, which is the only strain grown in cell culture. ADV-G was shown to migrate in agarose electrophoresis 22 per cent slower than the other strains.

Undifferentiated murine 402AX teratocarcinoma cells do not express MHC antigens when passaged in vitro or in vivo in genetically susceptible host mice. When passaged in vivo in genetically resistant mice, however, the tumor cells become H-2b antigen positive regardless of the H-2 haplotype of the resistant host mouse. The present studies use monoclonal anti-H-2b antibodies to corroborate these earlier findings, which were performed with conventional antisera.

Inhibition of precipitation in counter current electrophoresis was at least 32 more sensitive when compared to the normal counter current electrophoresis for the demonstration of mink antibodies against Aleutian disease virus (ADV). ADV antigen can be produced from mink organs or in cell culture. The reactivity of the two types of antigen in the two kinds of counter current electrophoresis methods is described in this report.

This paper reports on a conference at which participants reviewed indepth the literature on child abuse prevention and child development, as it pertains to different cultural and ethnic population groups, and identifies alternative prevention strategies for these different groups. The efficacy of the following interventions are analyzed: perinatal support programs, education for parents, treatment for abused children, early and periodic childhood screening and treatment programs; social skills training for children and young adults; mutual aid programs and neighborhood support groups; family support services such as crisis care; public information about child abuse and community development activities such as employment assistance. The paper concludes that although treatment services for different groups may be quite similar, prevention strategies must take account of the individual and unique values, norms and socialization patterns of different groups.

Thirty patients with surgically treated blowout fractures are reviewed. Of these, 3 had Caldwell-Luc procedures with antral packing, 23 had allograft implantation over the orbital floor fracture, and 4 required neither implantation nor antral packing. In 11 patients, with extensive defects, Marlex mesh was employed as the only support.

Previous studies have demonstrated that resistance and susceptibility to the 402AX testicular teratocarcinoma are under genetic control in the mouse. Under normal culture conditions or when passaged in genetically susceptible hosts, the nullipotent 402AX cells do not express H-2 antigens. However, when passaged in genetically resistant animals, the tumor cells become strongly positive for H-2 antigens in the absence of other indications of differentiation.

A prospective study of 31 children born of mothers with condylomata acuminata at parturition or during pregnancy was undertaken to test the hypothesis that laryngeal papilloma could be associated with venereal warts and could be acquired perinatally. None of the children born of mothers with condylomas at delivery or during their pregnancies had developed symptoms, signs, or observable lesions of laryngeal papilloma, whether delivered vaginally or by cesarean section. Nevertheless we do not know the true incidence of this disease or the infectivity of the causative micro-organism.

Multiple primary malignant tumors associated with an index cancer in the head and neck are gaining attention as more patients survive their initial primary disease, the longevity of the population at large increases, health care delivery becomes more readily available, and sophisticated diagnostic technology is developed. Forty-four patients with multiple primary cancer in whom the index neoplasm was inthe head and neck are reported. This group comprises 17 per cent of the patients with head and neck cancer treated at the Detroit General Hospital in the last 10 years.

Exposure to anhydrous ammonia can result in substantial injury to the respiratory system, eyes, and integument. In this retrospective study, we present the acute and chronic respiratory manifestations in 12 patients exposed to anhydrous ammonia as a result of the same accident. Survivors suffering significant ill effects are separated into two groups according to history and clinical course.

The popliteal hiatus is the opening defined by the fascicles of the lateral meniscus, which permits the popliteal tendon to pursue its course from the tibia to its femoral attachment. The medial border of the popliteal hiatus is the body of the meniscus. Ten fresh-frozen knee specimens from human adult males (with no evidence of previous surgery to the knees) were dissected.

The granular cell tumor is an uncommon lesion and, when arising in the head and neck, principally involves the tongue and larynx. A patient with a granular cell tumor of the floor of the mouth is reported. Management is usually accomplished by complete local excision, but longterm follow-up is mandatory.

At the present time, neither the etiologic factors nor the pathophysiologic mechanisms that lead to the development of endolymphatic hydrops or Ménière's disease are known; however, the anatomic-pathologic alterations in the labyrinth that are produced by the disease are well-documented. Undoubtedly, what is not known is responsible for the controversial status and questionable benefit that surgical decompression and drainage procedures have upon the endolymphatic system.
