Deciphering the ultrafast dynamics of a new tetraphenylethylene derivative in solutions: charge separation, phenyl ring rotation and CC bond twisting.

Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives are one of the fundamental units for developing aggregation induced emission (AIE) scaffolds. However, the underlying mechanisms implicated in the relaxation of the excited TPE remain a topic of ongoing discussion, while the effect of bulky substituents on its photobehaviour is still under scrutiny. Here, we report a detailed study of the photophysical properties of a new symmetrical and bulky TPE derivative with terphenyl groups (TTECOOBu) in solvents of different polarities and viscosities.

The association of post-traumatic stress disorder with glomerular filtration rate decline.

While major depression is known to be associated with glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decline, there is a lack of data on the association of other mental illnesses like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with kidney disease. In 640 adult participants of the Heart and Soul Study (mean baseline age of 66.2 years) with a high prevalence cardiovascular disease, hypertension and diabetes, we examined the association of PTSD with GFR decline over a 5-year follow-up.

Did ethno-racial disparities in access to transcatheter aortic valve replacement change over time?

Objective: In this study we sought to evaluate whether disparate use of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) among non-White patients has decreased over time, and if unequal access to TAVR is driven by unequal access to high-volume hospitals.

Methods: From 2013 to 2017, we used the State Inpatient Database across 8 states (Ariz, Colo, Fla, Md, NC, NM, Nev, Wash) to identify 51,232 Medicare beneficiaries who underwent TAVR versus surgical aortic valve replacement. Hospitals were categorized as low- (<50 per year), medium- (50-100 per year), or high-volume (>100 per year) according to total valve procedures (TAVR + surgical aortic valve replacement).

Survey of quality and clarity of methods and results reporting in 1 year of intervention studies published in high-impact medical and psychiatric journals.

Objective: We assessed how well articles in major medical and psychiatric journals followed best reporting practices in presenting results of intervention studies.

Method: Standardised data collection was used to review studies in high-impact and widely read medical (, and ) and psychiatric (, , and ) journals, published between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019. Two team members independently reviewed each article.

A genetic disorder reveals a hematopoietic stem cell regulatory network co-opted in leukemia.

The molecular regulation of human hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) maintenance is therapeutically important, but limitations in experimental systems and interspecies variation have constrained our knowledge of this process. Here, we have studied a rare genetic disorder due to MECOM haploinsufficiency, characterized by an early-onset absence of HSCs in vivo. By generating a faithful model of this disorder in primary human HSCs and coupling functional studies with integrative single-cell genomic analyses, we uncover a key transcriptional network involving hundreds of genes that is required for HSC maintenance.

Hot hole transfer at the plasmonic semiconductor/semiconductor interface.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-induced hot-carrier transfer provides an attractive alternative for light-harvesting using the full solar spectrum. This defect-mediated hot-carrier transfer is identical at the plasmonic semiconductor/semiconductor interface and can overcome the low efficiency of plasmonic energy conversion, thus boosting the efficiency of IR-light towards energy conversion. Here, using femtosecond transient absorption (TA) measurements, we directly observe the ultrafast non-radiative carrier dynamics of LSPR-driven hot holes created in CuS nanocrystals (NCs) and CuS/CdS hetero nanocrystals (HNCs).

Disruption of the HIF-1 pathway in individuals with Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome.

Ollier disease (OD) and Maffucci Syndrome (MS) are rare disorders characterized by multiple enchondromas, commonly causing bone deformities, limb length discrepancies, and pathological fractures. MS is distinguished from OD by the development of vascular anomalies. Both disorders are cancer predisposition syndromes with malignancies developing in ~50% of the individuals with OD or MS.

Breast cancer, the most frequent cancer in women, is generally classified into several distinct histological and molecular subtypes. However, single-cell technologies have revealed remarkable cellular and functional heterogeneity across subtypes and even within individual breast tumors. Much of this heterogeneity is attributable to dynamic alterations in the epigenetic landscape of the cancer cells, which promote phenotypic plasticity.

Background And Objectives: To determine the prevalence and relative importance of symptoms experienced by children and adults with Friedreich ataxia (FA) and to identify factors associated with a higher burden of disease.

Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews with individuals with FA and caregivers of pediatric individuals with FA to identify potential symptoms of importance to those living with FA. We subsequently performed a cross-sectional study to assess which symptoms have the highest prevalence and importance in FA and to determine which factors are associated with a higher burden of disease.

Clinical phenotypes of five patients with psychotic disorders carrying rare schizophrenia-associated loss-of-function variants.

The Schizophrenia Exome Meta-Analysis (SCHEMA) consortium identified 10 genes in which loss-of-function (LoF) variants are highly associated with schizophrenia (SZ). In a well-characterized sample of 988 patients with psychotic disorders, we investigated whether patients bearing a SCHEMA variant presented with unusual or unique signs, symptoms, or course of illness. We identified 5 patients who carried a LoF variant in a SCHEMA gene, each in a different gene.

Tuning Phonon Energies in Lanthanide-doped Potassium Lead Halide Nanocrystals for Enhanced Nonlinearity and Upconversion.

Optical applications of lanthanide-doped nanoparticles require materials with low phonon energies to minimize nonradiative relaxation and promote nonlinear processes like upconversion. Heavy halide hosts offer low phonon energies but are challenging to synthesize as nanocrystals. Here, we demonstrate the size-controlled synthesis of low-phonon-energy KPb X (X=Cl, Br) nanoparticles and the ability to tune nanocrystal phonon energies as low as 128 cm .
