The History of US Menstrual Health, School Nurses, and the Future of Menstrual Health Equity.

In the United States, adolescents suffer from inadequate menstrual health, meaning that adolescents are unprepared for menarche, lack the practical resources they need to comfortably and confidently manage menstruation, and receive inadequate health education and care for menstrual pain and disorders. In this article, we provide a historical analysis of the role of school nurses in addressing menstruation from the early 20th century up to the present day. We contextualize the current realities of school nursing and menstrual health education and clinical support.

The mental and behavioral health crisis in youth: Strategic solutions post COVID-19 pandemic: An American Academy of Nursing consensus paper.

The COVID-19 pandemic wrought significant negative impacts on youth well-being, particularly among Black, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaska Native, and LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning) youth. The pandemic disrupted connections to family, school, and community, which are essential supports for youth mental health. Lessons learned from the pandemic suggest the role of stress and windows of opportunity to build resiliency.

Renal medullary oxygenation during laparoscopic vs open surgery: the impact of blood pressure management-a pilot randomized controlled trial.

The impact of blood pressure targets and surgical approach (laparoscopic or open) on continuous urinary oxygenation (PuO), a validated surrogate of renal medullary PO, during general surgery, is unclear. We aimed to assess the effects of different blood pressure targets and surgical procedures on PuO. We randomized patients receiving either laparoscopic or open surgery into two mean arterial pressure (MAP) target groups: usual MAP or a high MAP.

Community-level social vulnerability and individual socioeconomic status on liver transplant referral outcome.

Background: Recent endeavors emphasize the importance of understanding early barriers to liver transplantation (LT) by consistently collecting data on patient demographics, socioeconomic factors, and geographic social deprivation indices.

Methods: In this retrospective single-center cohort study of 1657 adults referred for LT evaluation, we assessed the association between community-level vulnerability and individual socioeconomic status measures on the rate of waitlisting and transplantation. Patients' addresses were linked to Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) at the census tract-level to characterize community-level vulnerability.

School Nurses Can Reduce Firearm Injuries and Deaths.

The increasing incidents of school shootings in recent years have resulted in America's students, teachers, and staff feeling vulnerable. The most effective approach to creating safe and supportive school environments requires a comprehensive, coordinated effort including school-wide, district-wide, and community-wide strategies. School nurses, healthcare partners embedded in school communities, can guide these efforts.

High-flow oxygen oxygenating mouthguard in short upper gastrointestinal endoscopy: A randomised controlled trial.

Background: Anaesthetic care during upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy has the unique challenge of maintaining ventilation and oxygenation a shared upper airway. Supplemental oxygen is recommended by international society guidelines, however, the optimal route or rate of oxygen delivery is not known. Various oxygen delivery devices have been investigated to improve oxygenation during upper GI endoscopy, however, these are limited by commercial availability, costs and in some cases, the expertise required for insertion.

The Roses and Thorns of Legislative Advocacy in School Nursing Leadership.

State School Nurse Consultants provide leadership and technical assistance in many areas related to safety, education, and well-being of students. One area of assistance includes health surveillance and disease prevention. During the pandemic, summer of 2020, the legislative co-chairs of the New Jersey State School Nurses Association advocated for a State School Nurse Consultant position at the New Jersey Department of Education.

Blue-grey hyperpigmentation in acne after vandetanib therapy and doxycycline use: A case report.

Vandetanib is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor with cutaneous adverse effects that include the development of acne. We present a patient who underwent vandetanib therapy for stage IV medullary thyroid cancer in conjunction with the use of doxycycline for acne that developed. After vandetanib use, blue-grey pigmentation developed in the acne on his face, chest, back, and arms, which darkened after the use of doxycycline.

Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis, Dermatophytes, and Syphilis by Indigenous Peoples Prior to 1850.

The Iroquoian and Algonquian-speaking Peoples of North America discovered numerous natural treatments to dermatological conditions long prior to European settlement. Anthropological evidence suggests that treatments for atopic dermatitis, dermatophyte infections, and syphilitic lesions were derived from , genus trees, and S. Literature suggests these medicinal properties are attributed to the naturally abundant safrole, salicylic acid, and ascorbic acid in these flora.

Redesigning School Nursing Education in New Jersey to Address the Challenges and Opportunities of Population Health.

School health is a specialty practice of nursing positioned at the intersection of public health and population health. This article discusses the redesign of a program's curriculum with the hope of advancing and elevating the practice of school nursing. The redesign is based on NASN's Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice and is the result of a New Jersey Nursing Initiative grant awarded to a trio of adjunct faculty from Rutgers University Camden in July 2016.

Convergent Validity of the Early Memory Index in Two Primary Care Samples.

Karliner, Westrich, Shedler, and Mayman (1996) developed the Early Memory Index (EMI) to assess mental health, narrative coherence, and traumatic experiences in reports of early memories. We assessed the convergent validity of EMI scales with data from 103 women from an urban primary care clinic (Study 1) and data from 48 women and 24 men from a suburban primary care clinic (Study 2). Patients provided early memory narratives and completed self-report measures of psychopathology, trauma, and health care utilization.

Personality Assessment Screener, Childhood Abuse, and Adult Partner Violence in African American Women Using Primary Care.

This study assessed the relationship between psychopathology with the Personality Assessment Screener (PAS) and childhood physical and sexual abuse and adult physical and sexual partner violence in a primary care sample of 98 urban-dwelling African American women. Patients completed the PAS, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and the Conflict Tactics Scale. The PAS total score significantly correlated with all measures of childhood and adult abuse.

Validation of the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure Insight Scale.

In this cross-sectional study, we compare the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP) Insight Scale scores in three groups of psychoanalytic patients. Psychoanalysts completed the SWAP to describe a real patient at the beginning of analysis, a real patient at the end of analysis, or a hypothetical ideal patient at the end of a successful analysis. The SWAP Insight Scale scores were lowest for the patients at the beginning of analysis and highest for the hypothetical patients at the ideal end of analysis.
