Growth cone interactions with a glial cell line from embryonic Xenopus retina.

We have isolated a nonneuronal cell line from Xenopus retinal neuroepithelium (XR1 cell line). On the basis of immunocytochemical characterization using monoclonal antibodies generated in our laboratory as well as several other glial-specific antibodies, we have established that the XR1 cells are derived from embryonic astroglia. A monolayer of XR1 cells serves as an excellent substrate upon which embryonic retinal explants attach and elaborate neurites.

MR imaging of the corpus callosum: normal and pathologic findings and correlation with CT.

The MR appearance of the corpus callosum was investigated in 80 normal volunteers. Normal variations in appearance were recorded with regard to age, gender, and handedness. The MR studies of 47 patients with a wide spectrum of callosal disease were also reviewed.

A glial cell line (XR1 cell line) derived from Xenopus retinal neuroepithelium was examined for neurite outgrowth promoting activity. A monolayer of the XR1 cells serves as an excellent substrate upon which embryonic retinal explants attach and freely elaborate neurites. The XR1 neurite outgrowth promoting activity is not secreted into the medium, but is laid down directly on the substrate where it remains active after lysing the cells by hypoosmotic shock.

Profile of the breast center: one year's experience.

The Grant Regional Breast Center (GRBC) has proven to be an effective means to offer radiologic breast exam. Not only has the service been very well received by patients but it has also shown a profit for the institution. The numbers are too small to show that there has been an increase in early screening.

Sexual adaptation among single young adults with cystic fibrosis.

The sexual adaptation of 48 single young adults with cystic fibrosis and a comparably aged single group without chronic disease was assessed using interviews and questionnaires. The patients were also compared to a previously studied group of married patients with cystic fibrosis. Single female patients with cystic fibrosis began dating later, dated less often, felt less attractive, had less sexual desire, and had more sexual problems than did physically healthy female subjects.

The effects of coronary bypass surgery on female sexual, psychological, and vocational adaptation.

This paper reports the first study of female sexual, psychological, and vocational adaptation to coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). Semistructured interviews were used to obtain data on 17 women undergoing CABG. Four time periods were examined: prior to and after the onset of cardiac symptoms; four months and one year after CABG.

The acylcoenzyme A:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activity in liver microsomes from rats fed a diet containing 14% menhaden oil (Mp) for 11 days was 117% higher than that in microsomes from rats fed a corresponding diet containing 14% cocoa butter (Ms). There were no differences in the cholesterol and phospholipid contents of Mp and Ms or in the activities of palmitoyl coenzyme A hydrolase and NADPH cytochrome c reductase. NADPH-dependent lipid peroxidation was higher in Mp, whereas glucose 6-phosphatase activity was higher in Ms.

Thebaine variations between germplasm sources within one collection of Papaver bracteatum Lindl.

Plants of Papaver bracteatum Lindl. derived from different germplasm sources within one Iranian collection were grown for 18 and 37 weeks in the greenhouse and controlled environment chambers. Gas-chromatographic analyses showed significant differences between thebaine concentrations of root tissue for 18-week-old plants, but not for 37-week-old plants.
