Background: Bat-borne hantaviruses have been identified worldwide but little is known about neotropical bats in the megadiverse biomes of the American continent. Although serological evidence has hinted at hantavirus circulation in Brazil, the scarce number of genomic detection represents a gap to understand viral diversity, prevalence, and ecology of bat-borne hantaviruses.

Objective: We aim to investigate and evaluate the presence and prevalence of bat-borne hantavirus in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

Background: The NEURO-TTRansform trial showed that after 66 weeks of treatment, eplontersen significantly reduced neuropathic impairment and improved quality of life (QoL) in patients with hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN). In this secondary analysis from NEURO-TTRansform, autonomic impairment, and the impact of eplontersen on autonomic impairment progression was evaluated through 85 weeks in patients randomised to eplontersen ( = 144) versus external placebo ( = 60; through Week 66 from the NEURO-TTR trial).

Methods: Change from baseline in modified Neuropathy Impairment Score +7 (mNIS+7) composite score, Norfolk Quality of Life-Diabetic Neuropathy (Norfolk QoL-DN) total score, and the Neuropathy Symptoms and Change (NSC) total score was evaluated.

Background: This study aims to compare clinical and functional results after distal biceps tendon repair in manual workers vs. non-manual workers.

Methods: This is a retrospective comparative study which refers to 57 cases with distal biceps tendon rupture, divided in manual workers (24 elbows) and non-manual workers (33), that were treated by a single incision with cortical button and interference screw fixation.

Periodontal disease, one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide, is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by dysbiotic dental biofilms that trigger the host's immune response. Periodontitis is a type of periodontal disease characterized by the destruction of tissues that support the teeth. The disease is influenced by various systemic and environmental risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • * Epidemiological investigations and a literature review suggest that neurotropic strains of this bacteria had not been previously documented in Brazil prior to these instances.
  • * The emergence of another meningoencephalitis case in 2023 indicates the ongoing presence of these harmful strains in the environment, emphasizing the importance of monitoring for such infections.

Background: Central nervous system dysfunction is common in longstanding hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv) caused by the V30M (p.V50M) mutation. Neuropathology studies show leptomeningeal amyloid deposition and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA).

Article Synopsis
  • - The phase 3 NEURO-TTRansform trial demonstrated that eplontersen significantly reduced transthyretin (TTR) levels and halted the progression of neuropathy impairment in patients with hereditary TTR-mediated amyloidosis after 65 weeks of treatment.
  • - The study involved patients initially receiving inotersen, who then switched to eplontersen, resulting in a greater reduction of TTR levels and stabilized quality of life and nutritional status during the eplontersen treatment.
  • - Patients who switched to eplontersen experienced fewer treatment-emergent adverse events, restored platelet counts, and overall better tolerability, indicating a favorable benefit-risk profile for this treatment strategy. *

  • Human rabies is a deadly disease caused by lyssaviruses, and there has been an increase in cases following the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A case from Ceará, Brazil in 2023 involved a patient bitten by a marmoset who was also co-infected with SARS-CoV-2, diagnosed using minimally invasive autopsy (MIA).
  • MIA is beneficial for its biosafety and efficiency, reducing body disfigurement and enhancing rabies diagnostics and family cooperation in tracking the disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Thiopurine drugs are commonly prescribed for treating inflammatory bowel disease in children, but they can cause adverse effects, leading to discontinuation in some patients.
  • A study of 487 pediatric patients found that 11% experienced myelosuppression and other toxicities such as gastroenterological issues (11%) and hepatotoxicity (4.5%).
  • The research indicated that while certain genetic variants in TPMT and NUDT15 were expected to contribute to thiopurine toxicity, significant associations for toxicity were actually found in the AOX1 and DHFR genes among patients who did not carry these variants.

Although bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) act as natural reservoirs for many zoonotic pathogens around the world, few studies have investigated the occurrence of agents in bats, especially vampire bats. The family (order Rickettsiales) encompasses obligate intracellular bacteria of the genera , , , , , and . The present study aimed to investigate, using molecular techniques, the presence of species of , , and in vampire bats sampled in northern Brazil.

Hereditary transthyretin-related amyloidosis (ATTRv amyloidosis) is a rare and progressively debilitating disease characterized by the deposition of transthyretin (TTR) amyloid fibrils in various organs and tissues, most commonly in the heart and peripheral nerves. This pathological deposition can lead to significant organ dysfunction and, ultimately, organ failure. ATTRv amyloidosis exhibits a broad range of clinical presentations, from purely neurological symptoms to purely cardiac manifestations, as well as mixed phenotypes which result from both neurological and cardiac implications.

Objective: To create a protocol for performing minimally invasive autopsies (MIA) in detecting deaths from arboviruses and report preliminary data from its application in Ceará state, Brazil.

Methods: Training was provided to medical pathologists on MIA.

Results: A protocol was established for performing MIA, defining criteria for sample collection, storage methods, and diagnoses to be carried out according to the type of biological sample; 43 MIAs were performed in three months.

In this cross-sectional study, we determined the relative impact of long-term occupational exposure to pesticides on physical performance and perception of tiredness. Experimental data was collected in locus from agricultural communities and included surveys to assess the duration of exposure to pesticides, social status, habitual physical activity levels, presence of common mental disorders (CMD), and self-reported tiredness. Plasmatic cholinesterase (PChE), body composition and traditional functional performance tests (Handgrip strength-HGS; Time up and go-TUG; and Sit-to-stand-STS) were obtained.

Background: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv amyloidosis) is an inherited disease, where the study of family history holds importance. This study evaluates the changes of age-of-onset (AOO) and other age-related clinical factors within and among families affected by ATTRv amyloidosis.

Methods: We analysed information from 934 trees, focusing on family, parents, probands and siblings relationships.

Interaction of nanoplastics (NPls) with other environmental contaminants could affect their uptake by the organisms and their toxicity. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the polystyrene NPls (44 nm) interaction with the antidepressant amitriptyline (AMI) and its toxicity to Danio rerio embryos. A similar toxicological profile for NPls + AMI exposure was found for most of the evaluated endpoints, comparing with AMI single exposure, showing that the presence of NPls did not modulate the AMI toxicity.

Background: Bats are renowned for harboring a high viral diversity, their characteristics contribute to emerging infectious diseases. However, environmental and anthropic factors also play a significant role in the emergence of zoonotic viruses. Metagenomic is an important tool for investigating the virome of bats and discovering new viruses.

Acanthocephalans are grouped in a single phylum, having a cosmopolitan distribution and subdivided into several genera. Although species of this parasite genus have birds and mammals as definitive hosts, they have been reported in amphibians and reptiles, and have been noted as paratenic hosts. In this study we report the record of Rhinella major as a new paratenic host for the Centrorhynchus sp.
