COVID-19 and hospitalizations for SARI in Brazil: a comparison up to the 12th epidemiological week of 2020.

Surveillance of the severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) in Brazil aims to characterize the circulation of the Influenza A and B viruses in hospitalized cases and deaths, having been expanded in 2012 to include other respiratory viruses. COVID-19 was detected in Brazil for the time in the 9th epidemiological week of 2020, and the test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus was included in the surveillance protocol starting in the 12th epidemiological week. This study's objective was to investigate the pattern of hospitalizations for SARI in Brazil since the entry of SARS-CoV-2, comparing the temporal and age profiles and laboratory results to the years 2010 through 2019.

Modeling Basins of Attraction for Breast Cancer Using Hopfield Networks.

After two decades of genomics technological breakthroughs, personalized medicine is being used to improve treatment outcomes and mitigate side effects. In mathematical modeling, it has been proposed that cancer matches an attractor in Waddington's epigenetic landscape.

Synthesis of 1,4,6-Tricarbonyl Compounds via Regioselective Gold(I)-Catalyzed Alkyne Hydration and Their Application in the Synthesis of α-Arylidene-butyrolactones.

We report a direct, straightforward, and regioselective hydration of 1,4-enynes designed from Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts. Under smooth conditions and short reaction times, gold-catalyzed hydration of internal alkynes provides synthetically useful ketones as single regioisomers in yields higher than 90%. The synthetic usefulness of this protocol was demonstrated by the conversion of selected ketones into biologically valuable α-alkylidene-γ-lactones upon reduction with sodium borohydride.

BRAZILIAN SOCIETY OF HEPATOLOGY UPDATED RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH) published in 2015 its first recommendations about the management of HCC. Since then, new data have emerged in the literature, prompting the governing board of SBH to sponsor a single-topic meeting in August 2018 in São Paulo.

Large Margin Gaussian Mixture Classifier With a Gabriel Graph Geometric Representation of Data Set Structure.

This brief presents a geometrical approach for obtaining large margin classifiers. The method aims at exploring the geometrical properties of the data set from the structure of a Gabriel graph, which represents pattern relations according to a given distance metric, such as the Euclidean distance. Once the graph is generated, geometrical support vectors (SVs) (analogous to support vector machines (SVMs) SVs) are obtained in order to yield the final large margin solution from a Gaussian mixture model.

Long-term Outcome of a Modified Piggyback Liver Transplantation Technique Using the Recipient's Right and Middle Hepatic Veins.

Unlabelled: In early piggyback liver transplantation (LT) descriptions, the common stump of the middle and left hepatic veins (ML) was used for upper caval anastomosis. In this variant, stenosis or kinking of graft venous outflow path was frequent. Over time, most authors adopted the use of the recipient's right, middle, and left hepatic veins (RML) or a side-to-side anastomosis (SS) between the graft's and recipient's inferior vena cava (IVC).

Catalyst-Free Conjugate Addition of Indolizines to -Generated Oxidized Morita-Baylis-Hillman Adducts.

Sequential one-pot 2-iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) oxidation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) adducts followed by catalyst-free indolizine conjugate addition was developed. The wide scopes of MBH adducts and indolizines were investigated, and densely functionalized adducts were obtained in yields of up to 94%. The conjugate addition step occurred in less than a minute at room temperature with total regioselectivity toward indolizine C3 carbon.

["The table that shrank": the food perspective of mothers who have lost children].

This article describes the relationship of bereaved mothers with eating habits, based on the existential phenomenology considering that the family food space, led by the matriarch, can be disturbed due to the loss of a child. Interviews were conducted with fifteen women attending non-governmental bereavement support groups, aged between 40 and 61 years of age. Based on the analysis of the interviews, four thematic categories emerged revealing how grieving mothers behave: loss of appetite and pleasure in eating food; the action of sharing meals versus maternal mourning; the confrontation with the "empty chair"; and reactions due to the culinary act that symbolizes the memory of the child.

Uncommon Prostate Malignant Neoplasms.

Prostate adenocarcinoma is the most common prostate cancer; however, there are several other malignant neoplasms that radiologists should be familiar with. The histological classification of malignant prostate neoplasms includes epithelial tumors, mesenchymal tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, hematolymphoid tumors, and stromal tumors. Knowledge of the main clinical and prostate magnetic resonance imaging features of uncommon tumors beyond adenocarcinoma is important for radiologists to enlarge their diagnostic ability and guide referring physician regarding the appropriate patient workup.

Integrating environmental variables by multivariate ordination enables the reliable estimation of mineland rehabilitation status.

Despite the wide variety of variables commonly employed to measure the success of rehabilitation, the assessment and subsequent definition of indicators of environmental rehabilitation status are not simple tasks. The main challenges are comparing rehabilitated sites with target ecosystems as well as integrating individual environmental and eventually collinear variables into a single tractable measure for the state of a system before effective indicators that track rehabilitation may be modeled. Furthermore, a consensus is lacking regarding which and how many variables need to be surveyed for a reliable estimation of rehabilitation status.

Polidocanol echosclerotherapy treatment for lymphocele: case report and review.

Formation of lymphocele secondary to transection of lymphatic channels during surgical procedures or traumas is relatively common and is reported in the postoperative period of approximately 30% of lymph node resection procedures. The condition may be asymptomatic or can present with complications such as pain, secondary infection, and compression of blood vessels, which can cause stasis, thrombosis, and edema. There is no consensus on treatment.

Development and psychometric validation of Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short-Form (IGDS9-SF) in a Brazilian sample.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop and examine the psychometric properties of the IGDS9-SF in a sample of Brazilian gamers and to find the best cut-off point for this instrument using a normative and clinically diagnosed sample of gamers.

Methods: A total of 610 participants were recruited to the present study. Construct validity was assessed through Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (EFA, CFA).

Sleepiness comorbid to musculoskeletal pain is associated with worse quality of life and mood symptoms in a general population sample.

Objectives: Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain and hypersomnolence (HPS) are very disabling conditions that may share some pathophysiological factors. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between MSK pain and HPS and its association with mood symptoms, fatigue, quality of life, and both objective and subjective sleep quality.

Design: Cross-sectional study.

Lisdexamfetamine to improve excessive daytime sleepiness and weight management in narcolepsy: a case series.

Objective: To report the successful use of lisdexamfetamine in the management of narcolepsy.

Methods: Five narcoleptic patients received lisdexamfetamine, at different dosages and for different periods, for management of excessive daytime sleepiness and weight control.

Results: All patients experienced improvement of excessive daytime sleepiness and lost weight without side effects.

Trypanosomatids are protozoan parasites that infect thousands of globally dispersed hosts, potentially affecting their physiology. Several species of trypanosomatids are commonly found in phytophagous insects. Leptomonas wallacei is a gut-restricted insect trypanosomatid only retrieved from Oncopeltus fasciatus.

Lysophosphatidylcholine triggers cell differentiation in the protozoan parasite Herpetomonas samuelpessoai through the CK2 pathway.

Background: Protozoa are distantly related to vertebrates but present some features of higher eukaryotes, making them good model systems for studying the evolution of basic processes such as the cell cycle. Herpetomonas samuelpessoai is a trypanosomatid parasite isolated from the hemipteran insect Zelus leucogrammus. Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) is implicated in the transmission and establishment of Chagas disease, whose etiological agent is Trypanosoma cruzi.

Childhood trauma and depressive symptoms in pregnant adolescents in Southern Brazil.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between child maltreatment and depressive symptomatology during gestation in adolescents.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with pregnant adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. Data were collected with the Beck Depression Inventory, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview.

People living with HIV/AIDS: body image and its important associations with mental health and BMI.

Patients on antiretroviral therapy face new challenges, such as bodily changes. We conducted a cross-sectional study with people living with HIV/AIDS. We investigate the self-perception of body image and its associations.

The influence of sleep quality and circadian preferences on upper extremity rehabilitation in stroke patients after constraint-induced movement therapy.

Our aim was to explore the influence of sleep and circadian preference on upper extremity (UE) rehabilitation in stroke patients after constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) in a cross-sectional retrospective observational study. Forty-three patients were selected to complete questionnaires on circadian preference, sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness, and risk of obstructive sleep apnea. They had undergone a 10-day standard CIMT program without medical complications and with normal to minimal cognitive dysfunction.

Intramolecular H-Bond Is Formed in 2-Fluorophenol and 2-Fluorothiophenol, but It May Not Be the Main Pathway of the Coupling Constant Transmission.

The intramolecular CF···HX (X = O or S) H-bond and spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) in 2-fluorophenol and 2-fluorothiophenol were investigated experimentally by H and F NMR and theoretically in the framework of the natural bond orbital analysis. In contrast with recent findings from the literature, the results obtained in this work showed that an intramolecular H-bond is formed in the cis conformers and that it has an electrostatic origin. Such an intramolecular electrostatic H-bond is the interaction that rules the conformational preferences on these compounds.

Silk fibroin/hydroxyapatite composite membranes: Production, characterization and toxicity evaluation.

Alloplastic materials based on biopolymers such as silk fibroin (SF) have provided the synthesis of excellent biomaterials for bone repair. The aim of the present study was to produce SF membranes associated to hydroxyapatite (HA) and evaluate their physicochemical characteristics and the toxicity potential. After obtaining the SF, the HPLC was executed to verify the elimitation of serecin, a toxic protein of the silk, and the cytotoxicity assay was assessed in the subtances from the SF processing.

Restless legs syndrome in patients on hemodialysis: Polysomnography findings.

Introduction: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a highly prevalent sleep movement disorder usually accompanied by periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS). The incidence of RLS and PLMS in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on dialysis is much higher. Clinically, RLS and PLMS can co-occur.
