Amoebic keratitis (AK) is a sight-threatening infection characterized by a severe inflammation of the cornea, caused by the free-living protozoan of the genus Acanthamoeba. Identification of amoebic proteins involved in AK pathogenesis may help to elucidate molecular mechanisms of infection and contribute to indicate diagnostic and therapeutic targets. Osteomyelitis is a major challenge in bone surgery and conventional treatment is frequently ineffective to control the infection, with an alternative approach being required. In the present work, a heparinized nanohydroxyapatite/collagen biocomposite was produced in granular form, and loaded with vancomycin, to work as a local drug delivery system for osteomyelitis and as a bone substitute. This strategy involves the local delivery of high concentrations of vancomycin, to eradicate the infection.

Design: This cross-sectional study assessed the agreement between medical orders in POLST forms and the free-form text documentation of an advance care planning conversation performed by an independent researcher during a single episode of hospitalization.

Setting And Participants: Inpatients at a single public university hospital, aged 21 years or older, and for whom one of their attending physicians provided a negative answer to the following question: "Would I be surprised if this patient died in the next year?" There is little information on the anatomical pathology of Brazilian anteaters. Considering the relevance of knowledge of diseases of these species for their conservation, the aim of this study was to describe pathological changes in 99 captive and free-ranging anteaters from the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Mato Grosso do Sul and Amazonas. How do peripheral muscle tissue oxygenation and physical conditioning levels of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis compare to demographically matched controls? What is the main finding and its importance? Children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis consumed more oxygen, more quickly and exhibited slower recovery, demonstrating that there may have been deficiencies in oxygen supply related to both oxygen uptake and oxygen transport.
