Objective: In this study, we reviewed the post-operative complications in parotidectomy and its association with various patient, tumour and surgical factors.
Methods: All parotidectomies performed in our regional unit between 2013 to 2020 were identified. Electronic medical record and clinic letters were reviewed for any post-operative complications.
Objective: During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, ENT-UK recommended a move from face-to-face clinics to telephone appointments. This study reviewed the safety of telephone clinics for urgent two-week-wait cancer referrals.
Methods: Patients consulted in telephone clinics between April and November 2020 were identified from an electronic database.
Objective: Given the uncertainty regarding the predictive value of unilateral tonsillar enlargement and/or lesion in malignancies, this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of unilateral tonsillar enlargement and/or lesion referral criterion in the adult suspected head and neck cancer pathway.
Methods: All two-week wait referrals received in 2018-2019 were reviewed. All patients referred with unilateral tonsillar enlargement and/or lesion were included and analysed for patient demographic data, presenting symptoms, initial clinic outcomes and final diagnoses.
Aim: Nationally, concern has been raised about the overuse of diagnostic testing. In patients with unilateral otalgia and no history of Head and Neck Cancer (HNC), 1% had a malignancy detected on imaging that was not detected on clinical examination.
Methods: We performed a retrospective review of "MRI soft tissue neck" scans performed at our hospital from May 2020 to May 2021.
Objective: The operating theatre, as the primary learning environment for surgeons, needs to be conducive to achieve successful training. A validated 27-item questionnaire aimed at evaluating the training experience of higher surgical trainees in the operating theatre was developed.
Methods: The initial questionnaire was developed using a literature review and a focus group.
Objective: Wide-ranging outcomes have been reported for surgical and non-surgical management of T3 laryngeal carcinomas. This study compared the outcomes of T3 tumours treated with laryngectomy or (chemo)radiotherapy in the northeast of England.
Methods: The outcomes of T3 laryngeal carcinoma treatment at three centres (2007-2016) were retrospectively analysed using descriptive statistics and survival curves.
Objectives: Typically, HPV-related cancers are sexually transmitted, however, the natural history of HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) is unclear. HPV16 transmission has been reported previously between five couples with OPSCC. We report the clinico-pathological features of a further four couples with HPV-related OPSCC and compare them with the published cases.

To assess the within-group change in swallowing function between 3 and 12 months following treatment.
Design: Non-randomised cohort study.

The treatment of post-surgical hypoparathyroidism (following thyroid or parathyroid surgery) is challenging. Presently, this condition is treated with calcium and vitamin D supplements rather than replacing the missing parathyroid hormone. Not only is it challenging to maintain normocalcaemia, but concerns of hypercalciuria and ectopic calcification have also been raised using these supplements.

One distinct feature is their resemblance to ductal carcinomas of breast. A significant percentage of SDCs overexpress Her2 and the use of targeted therapy with trastuzumab can be considered in these patients.

Methods: A literature review was conducted to determine the risk of cross-contamination associated with multiple-use topical nasal anaesthetic spray. The costs of multiple-use Co-phenylcaine Forte and single-use co-phenylcaine were compared, and potential savings were calculated.
Aim: To conduct a questionnaire survey of speech and language therapists providing and managing surgical voice restoration in England.
Method: National Health Service Trusts registering more than 10 new laryngeal cancer patients during any one year, from November 2009 to October 2010, were identified, and a list of speech and language therapists compiled. A questionnaire was developed, peer reviewed and revised.
Objectives/hypothesis: A literature review regarding the use of laryngopharyngeal mucosal signs in diagnosing laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR).
Study Design: Literature review.
Methods: A search of MEDLINE in February 2012 using the terms laryngopharyngeal reflux, laryngitis, mucosa, appearances, and signs (English language only).
Objective: We report an extremely rare case of vocal fold palsy secondary to vitamin B12 deficiency.
Method: Case report and English-Language review of the world literature concerning vitamin B12 deficiency and its neurological manifestations. We discuss the physiological role of vitamin B and its specific relationship to the presented patient's symptoms.
A simple method for preparing artificial kidney stones with varying physical properties is described. BegoStone was prepared with a powder-to-water ratio ranging from 15:3 to 15:6. The acoustic properties of the phantoms were characterized using an ultrasound transmission technique, from which the corresponding mechanical properties were calculated based on elastic wave theory.

Introduction: Otolaryngology is the surgical speciality with the highest paediatric workload, accounting for 29% of the total. Children are not miniature adults and require specially trained staff, equipment, facilities and an environment appropriate to their needs. Documents from the Department of Health and the Royal Colleges of Surgeons and Anaesthetists have been published outlining national standards and recommendations for paediatric surgical service provision.

We have determined the regulation of FGF-2 and FGFR1 synthesis by TSH in a rat thyroid cell line (FRTL5) and have used a replication-defective adenovirus (RAd) expressing dominant negative FGFR1 (RAdDN-FGFR1) to examine the role of FGFR signaling in vitro and in goiter induced in mice. TSH induced FGF-2 and increased the expression of FGFR1 in FRTL5 cells.
