University core curricula and accreditation standards for healthcare profession programs can be challenging to align. Additionally, interprofessional education (IPE) requirements for healthcare professions curricula have been designed to prepare learners for future practice. This paper describes alignment of an introductory IPE course with embedded Interprofessional Education Collaborative core competencies to specific university Core Curriculum attributes.

Big team science initiatives: A catalyst for trustworthy advancements in IO psychology.

Keener et al. (2023) raise concerns about the trustworthiness of Industrial/Organizational (IO) Psychology research and related fields due to the low reproducibility and replicability of research findings. The authors provide various solutions to resolve this crisis, such as improving training, realigning incentives, and adopting open science practices.

A Surgical Kit for Stem Cell-Derived Retinal Pigment Epithelium Transplants: Collection, Transportation, and Subretinal Delivery.

Transplantation of stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells is a promising potential therapy for currently incurable retinal degenerative diseases like advanced dry age-related macular degeneration. In this study, we designed a set of clinically applicable devices for subretinal implantation of RPE grafts, towards the overarching goal of establishing enabling technologies for cell-based therapeutic approaches to regenerate RPE cells. This RPE transplant kit includes a custom-designed trephine for the production of RPE transplants, a carrier for storage and transportation, and a surgical device for subretinal delivery of RPE transplants.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Drusen are key contributors to the etiology of AMD and the ability to modulate drusen biogenesis could lead to therapeutic strategies to slow or halt AMD progression. The mechanisms underlying drusen biogenesis, however, remain mostly unknown.

Cutting balloon angioplasty on branch pulmonary artery stenosis in pediatric patients.

Objectives: To identify medium-term results following cutting balloon angioplasty (CBA) for branch pulmonary artery stenosis (PAS) and predictors of successful intervention.

Background: CBA has emerged as a successful alternative therapy for PAS resistant to conventional balloon angioplasty techniques but there is little information on medium and long-term outcomes.

Methods: This is a descriptive, single center, retrospective chart review of pediatric patients who underwent CBA for PAS at Arkansas Children's Hospital between May 2005 and December 2020.

Stimulus Characteristics in Picture Story Exercise Cards and Their Effects on the Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale-Global Rating Method.

This study examined the effects of stimulus characteristics from the Picture Story Exercise (PSE; Smith, 1992) on the quality of social cognition and object relational functions as expressed in narrative responses. A nonclinical sample of 140 adults told stories to five PSE cards. Three trained raters scored the narratives using the Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale-Global Rating Method (SCORS-G; Stein & Slavin-Mulford, 2018).

Comparison of Flow Dynamics of Peripherally and Centrally Inserted Intravenous Catheters Using a Rapid Infusion System (ThermaCor 1200).

The inability to rapidly administer warm intravenous fluids and blood products can potentially threaten a patient's safety and well-being in many clinical settings. Large-bore intravenous catheters and rapid infusion systems are often used in situations where rapid blood loss and massive blood transfusion may be expected. This study examined the maximum flow rate and infusion pressure of various peripherally and centrally inserted intravenous catheters using a rapid infusion system (ThermaCor 1200 Rapid Infusion System, Smisson-Cartledge Biomedical).

Personal, Political, Pedagogic: Challenging the Binary Bind in Archaeological Teaching, Learning and Fieldwork.

In this paper, we consider how we can undercut the various binaries of gender and sexuality in archaeological practice and particularly in our teaching. We argue that taking an assemblage theory approach enables us to look at the multiplicity of identities of those practicing archaeology as different and intersecting assemblages that bring one another into being through their connections at different scales. In particular, we examine how this approach can be applied to archaeological pedagogy and how this in turn enables us to move away from modern binary distinctions about sex and gender identities from the 'bottom up', fostering an approach in our students that will then go on to be developed in professional practice.

Pediatric pulmonary hypertension: diagnosis and management.

Purpose Of Review: The article is intended to provide an overview of the most current modalities for the diagnosis and management of pulmonary hypertension in the pediatric population.

Recent Findings: The WHO has recently updated the classification for pulmonary hypertension to include an expanded range of pediatric disease cohorts. We continue to gain knowledge of traditional pulmonary hypertension therapies (phosphodiesterase inhibitors, endothelin-receptor antagonists, and prostanoids) and remain optimistic that new therapeutic modalities [cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) stimulators, oral prostacyclins, and gene therapy] will lead to improved outcomes in pediatric patients.

The efficacy of adjunctive N-acetylcysteine in major depressive disorder: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

Objective: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders, conferring considerable individual, family, and community burden. To date, treatments for MDD have been derived from the monoamine hypothesis, and there is a paucity of emerging antidepressants, especially with novel mechanisms of action and treatment targets. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a redox-active glutathione precursor that decreases inflammatory cytokines, modulates glutamate, promotes neurogenesis, and decreases apoptosis, all of which contribute to the neurobiology of depression.

Celiac disease is not increased in women with hip fractures and low vitamin D levels.

Objective: Celiac disease is associated with decreased bone density; however, the risk of fractures in celiac disease patients is unclear. We compared the prevalence of celiac disease between a group of women with hip fractures and a group of women undergoing elective joint replacement surgery and the association between celiac disease and vitamin D levels.

Methods: Two hundred eight community dwelling and postmenopausal women were recruited from Boston, MA (n=81) and Baltimore, MD (n=127).

Maintenance N-acetyl cysteine treatment for bipolar disorder: a double-blind randomized placebo controlled trial.

Background: N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a glutathione precursor that has been shown to have antidepressant efficacy in a placebo-controlled trial. The current study aimed to investigate the maintenance effects of NAC following eight weeks of open-label treatment for bipolar disorder.

Method: The efficacy of a double blind randomized placebo controlled trial of 2 g/day NAC as adjunct maintenance treatment for bipolar disorder was examined.

Background: Evidence is accumulating to support the presence of redox dysregulation in a number of psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder. This dysregulation may be amenable to therapeutic intervention. Glutathione is the predominant non-enzymatic intracellular free radical scavenger in the brain, and the most generic of all endogenous antioxidants in terms of action.

Comparison of estimated glomerular filtration rate with estimated creatinine clearance in the dosing of drugs requiring adjustments in elderly patients with declining renal function.

Background: The National Kidney Foundation's practice guidelines for chronic kidney disease recommend using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation for calculating the estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

Objective: The purpose of this article was to compare the use of this estimated GFR with estimated creatinine clearance (CrCl) calculated using the Cockcroft-Gault equation (CG(CrCl)-Eq) in the dosing of drugs requiring adjustments in elderly patients with declining renal function. Existing as well as new serum creatinine assay standards were used.

Influences on pharmacy students' decision to pursue a doctor of pharmacy degree.

Objectives: To determine what influenced pharmacy students to pursue a career in pharmacy and how those influences varied among different racial groups.

Methods: A 30-question survey instrument was developed and administered to doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) students at the University of Georgia and Florida A&M University. Data were analyzed to identify differences between students at different institutions and of different racial groups.

Telepsychiatry reduces geographic physician disparity in rural settings, but is it financially feasible because of reimbursement?

Telemedicine has been shown to improve rural patient outcomes in two randomized controlled trials, to increase access to many patients, to serve underserved minorities, and to train primary care providers. Yet, programs are dwindling even after successful grants due to inadequate reimbursement. Studies have been thoroughly done to gauge the payor status of potential rural telemedicine patients, as the "floodgates" are not generally open to all-including those who cannot pay-in typical grants.

The e-Mental Health Consultation Service: providing enhanced primary-care mental health services through telemedicine.

This article describes the University of California, Davis Medical Center eMental Health Consultation Service, a program designed to integrate tele-mental health clinical services, provider-to-provider consultation, and provider distance education. During the first year of operation, consultations were provided for 289 cases. The most common diagnoses among children were for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder-spectrum problems.

Development of an instrument to measure professionalism.

Objectives: To develop and validate an instrument that measures professionalism among pharmacy students and recent graduates.

Methods: A pharmacy professionalism survey instrument developed by a focus group was pretested and then administered to all first-year pharmacy students enrolled in the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy and to recent pharmacy graduates who were taking the preparation course for the Georgia Pharmacy Law Examination and North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination. Participants were asked to indicate the extent to which they agreed or disagreed with each of 32 items using a 5-point Likert scale.

Use of secure e-mail and telephone: psychiatric consultations to accelerate rural health service delivery.

Telemedicine is one strategy to improve the accessibility and quality of specialty healthcare to rural settings. After nearly 10 years of video evaluation of patients in rural primary care, telephone and e-mail physician-to-physician consultations were initiated to supplement video and hasten treatment initiation. This paper proposes a model of using telephone and e-mail consultations before or in place of video consultations, because the latter are not always available or timely.

Synthesis of salvinorin A analogues as opioid receptor probes.

Several neoclerodanes, such as salvinorin A (1) and herkinorin (3), have recently been shown to possess opioid receptor activity in vitro and in vivo. To explore the structure-affinity relationships of this interesting class of compounds, we have synthesized a series of analogues from 1 isolated from Salvia divinorum. Here, we report the semisynthesis of neoclerodane diterpenes and their structure-affinity relationships at opioid receptors.
