We assessed behavioral and subjective abuse liability indices for ENDS varying in nicotine flux with fixed puff duration among people who smoke.

Methods: This within-subjects study included 32 adults who smoked cigarettes.

Depression, Drinking to Cope, and Alcohol Use Severity Among Latinos Who Drink: The Moderating Role of Sex.

Objectives: The present study evaluated sex differences in the direct and indirect links between depressive symptoms, coping motives to drink, and alcohol use severity among Latinos who drink.

Methods: A large and diverse panel sample of Latinos, who were strategically sampled to be reflective of the Latino demographics of the state of Texas, completed questionnaires assessing their depressive symptomatology, coping motives to drink, and alcohol use behaviors.

Results: Direct effects were significant in hypothesized directions such that depressive symptoms was positively associated with both coping motives to drink and alcohol use severity, and drinking motives to cope were positively associated with alcohol use severity.

Smoking Discrimination Moderates the Relationship between Smoking Stigma and Cigarettes Per Day among Sexual and Gender Minority Individuals.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals report rates of tobacco use that range from 19% to 40% compared to roughly 20% of the general population. Higher rates of tobacco use, compounded by stress from discrimination, contribute to lower cessation rates and worse smoking-related outcomes for SGM individuals. Having multiple stigmatized identities, such as identifying as SGM and being a person who uses cigarettes, may further increase smoking, and decrease the likelihood of cessation.

Ethnic discrimination, cultural identification, and well-being among undocumented Hispanic immigrants in the United States: A test of the rejection-identification model.

This study aimed to examine the rejection-identification model (RIM) within a community sample of undocumented Hispanic immigrants in the United States, a unique and vulnerable population who face distinct legal and sociopolitical challenges. The RIM posits that ethnic discrimination is associated with increased identification with one's ethnic group, which, in turn, is positively associated with well-being. Data were collected from a community sample of 140 undocumented Hispanic immigrants living in the South-Central United States during the height of the 2015 Trump presidential campaign.

Development of Root Caries Associated With the Use of Sugar-Free Nicotine Lozenges: A Long-Term Case Report.

The authors present a case concerning an adult male patient who developed multiple sites of root caries adjacent to the area where he habitually held a sugar-free nicotine lozenge that contained mannitol and maltodextrin. The root caries occurred despite the patient's excellent oral hygiene, exemplary dietary habits, and clinically normal salivary flow. Between 1999 and 2008, he had only required two restorations to repair carious lesions.

Background: Mitigating attrition is a key component to reduce selection bias in longitudinal randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Few studies of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) allow for the examination of long-term retention. This analysis explores the relationship between attrition, baseline measures, and condition assigned for a RCT involving ENDS differing in nicotine delivery over a 24-week intervention period.

Separators play a critical role in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) by facilitating lithium-ion (Li-ion) transport while enabling safe battery operation. However, commercial separators made from polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE) impose a discrete processing step in current LIB manufacturing as they cannot be manufactured with the same slot-die coating process used to fabricate the electrodes. Moreover, commercial separators cannot accommodate newer manufacturing processes used to produce leading-edge microbatteries and flexible batteries with customized form factors.

We report the reactivity, structures and spectroscopic characterization of reactions of phosphine-based ligands (mono-, di- and tri-dentate) with iron-carbide carbonyl clusters. Historically, the archetype of this cluster class, namely [Fe(μ-C)(μ-CO)(CO)], can be prepared on a gram-scale but is resistant to simple ligand substitution reactions. This limitation has precluded the relevance of iron-carbide clusters relating to organometallics, catalysis and the nitrogenase active site cluster.

Background: Men with cystic fibrosis (CF) have sexual health concerns such as delayed puberty, infertility, and hypogonadism. The causes and prevalence of hypogonadism have not been well studied. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of a low testosterone concentration in men with CF.

Young users of electronic cigarettes exhibit reduced cardiorespiratory fitness.

Electronic nicotine delivery systems, often referred to as e-cigarettes, are popular tobacco products frequently advertised as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes despite preliminary data suggesting a potential negative cardiovascular impact. Cardiorespiratory fitness is a critical cardiovascular health marker that is diminished in individuals who consume traditional tobacco products. Whether the use of e-cigarettes impacts cardiorespiratory fitness is currently unknown.

Laser and scanning electron microscopy evaluation of residual microislands of calculus.

Background: Recent studies suggest a role for microscopic crystalline particles of residual dental calculus in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. The purpose of this ex vivo study was to compare the effectiveness of scaling and root planing (SRP) alone versus SRP combined with 24% ethylenediamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA) gel in removing calculus from extracted teeth and to determine the optimal length of time for application of the EDTA.

Methods: Specimens consisted of 32 extracted teeth with heavy root calculus.

Introduction: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed banning cigarettes and cigars with characterizing flavors-products used disproportionately by African American/black (AA/B) individuals. Little is known about how AA/B individuals who smoke menthol cigarettes will respond to flavor bans or how to amplify the intended benefits. This study explored predictors of quit intentions following a hypothetical flavor ban and further probed anticipated ban-related responses.

Cultural stress, personal identity development, and mental health among U.S. Hispanic college students.

The present study examines the extent to which culturally stressful experiences may predict impaired well-being, increased internalizing symptoms (depression and anxiety), and increased externalizing problems (social aggression, physical aggression, and rule breaking) among a sample of Hispanic college students in Miami across a 12-day period. The predictive effects of cultural stressors on these outcomes were examined both (a) directly and (b) indirectly through daily fluctuations in students' personal identity synthesis and confusion. Results indicated direct predictive effects of cultural stress on four forms of well-being (self-esteem, life satisfaction, psychological well-being, and eudaimonic well-being), on symptoms of depression and anxiety, and on physical aggression and rule breaking.
