Introduction: Cases involving invasive cervical root resorption (ICRR) in oncological patients are rare, in addition, follow-up of these patients has not yet been reported in the literature.

Objective: This study aims to present a literature review and report a case of denosumab as a possible cause of ICRR in a patient with breast cancer with 2 years of follow-up.

Case Report: A 39-year-old female with a history of luminal breast cancer was treated with denosumab semiannually for osteopenia with discontinuation 1 year ago.

The classification of melanoma into four histological subtypes has been questioned regarding its clinical validity in providing relevant information for treatment for metastatic tumors. Specific genetic alterations are associated with particular clinical and histopathological features, suggesting that these could be helpful in refining existing melanoma classification schemes. We analyzed BRAF V600E mutated melanomas to explore the Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) utility as a screening aid in the evaluation of the most appropriate patients for genetic testing.

Scleromyxedema is a rare chronic cutaneous mucinosis of unknown etiology. It is characterized by papular eruption and scleroderma with microscopic evidence of mucin deposition, fibroblast proliferation, and fibrosis. Most patients with scleromyxedema have monoclonal gammopathy and systemic manifestations resulting in significant morbidity and mortality.

Distant metastases from salivary gland tumors are considered infrequent: the incidence of distant metastases ranges from 24% to 61% according to different histotypes and to the site of the primary mass. The most common site of distant metastases due to salivary gland malignancies is the lung. From the pathology point of view, cytokeratins (CK) are important differentiation markers in salivary gland tumors, which are often used for the diagnostic process.

Background: Genome-wide profiling of rare tumors is crucial for improvement of diagnosis, treatment, and, consequently, achieving better outcomes. Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare type of sarcoma arising from mesenchymal cells of abdominal peritoneum that usually develops in male adolescents and young adults. A specific translocation, t(11;22)(p13;q12), resulting in EWS and WT1 gene fusion is the only recurrent molecular hallmark and no other genetic factor has been associated to this aggressive tumor.

Background: Several studies have reported the clinical aspects of oral syphilis, but few papers have considered the involved immunoinflammatory mechanisms.

Objective: To analyze the clinicopathologic features and expression of immunoinflammatory and vascular proteins in oral secondary syphilis.

Study Design: Fifteen patients with oral secondary syphilis were included; histologic features were analyzed using hematoxylin-eosin-stained histologic slides and immunohistochemical reactions were performed against intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and CD34.

Purpose: To investigate the deposition of collagen in the colon wall of patients with sigmoid diverticulitis.

Methods: Samples of sigmoid tissue from 15 patients (disease group), seven men and eight women aged 37-77 years who underwent surgery for the treatment of diverticulitis, were selected. For the control group, specimens from five patients, three men and two women aged 19-58 years undergoing emergency surgery for sigmoid trauma were selected.

Several studies suggest that melanoma patients with a positive sentinel node biopsy (SNB) can avoid having complete nodal dissection on the basis of pathological features of the node. The aim of the study was to determine the value of metastatic area ratio as a predictive factor for nonsentinel node (NSN) positivity. A retrospective analysis was carried out of melanoma patients who underwent SNB in a single institution between 2000 and 2010.

Vemurafenib is a selective inhibitor of V600E-mutant BRAF protein used to treat metastatic and unresectable melanoma. Clinical trials have shown increased overall survival and progression-free survival in patients treated with Vemurafenib. However, cutaneous adverse events are common during treatment.

Primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas (PCBCLs) constitute 25% of all primary cutaneous lymphomas. They present in the skin with no evidence of systemic or extracutaneous disease at the time of diagnosis, after adequate staging. Primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas differ significantly from their nodal counterparts in relation to both clinical behavior and prognosis.

Background: Sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) in popliteal basins are rare, and there is controversy in literature regarding their origin, management, and outcomes.

Objectives: To correlate clinical and pathological features of popliteal basin drainage and analyze the impact of popliteal lymph node drainage on survival.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective analysis of SLN biopsies performed at a single institution between 2000 and 2010.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining Q-switched Nd:YAG non-ablative fractionated lasers with intense pulsed light in treating patients with stubborn melasma.
  • This combination appears to be the most effective approach for addressing hyperpigmentation caused by melasma, with minimal side effects reported.
  • The low incidence of side effects is likely due to the targeted treatment effect at a subcellular level, known as selective photothermolysis.

Background: The pathological features of melanoma biopsies can provide significant prognostic information that can help the surgeon evaluate the risk of nodal disease. The aim of this study was to attempt to determine the relationship between pathological features of primary melanoma and nodal disease, by sentinel node biopsy (SNB) and complete node dissection (CND).

Methods: A retrospective analysis was completed of patients who underwent SNB at AC Camargo Cancer Center, São Paulo, Brazil, between 2000 and 2010.

Article Synopsis
  • - Thyroid nodules are common, and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most frequent form of thyroid cancer, but existing diagnostic methods can lead to unnecessary surgeries due to their limitations.
  • - This study used gene expression profiling to identify molecular markers that can improve the diagnosis of thyroid lesions, creating a diagnostic algorithm based on a panel of 28 transcripts.
  • - The findings highlighted a specific combination of transcripts (CLDN10, HMGA2, and LAMB3) that achieved high sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing PTC from benign lesions, with the potential to predict the risk of lymph node metastasis.

Background: Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) of the vulva is rare and oncologic surgery with free margins may lead to severe functional damage, requiring multidisciplinary approach regarding resection, margin assessment and reconstruction.Case Report: Two cases of DFSP in vulva were treated in a single institution. A 28-year-old patient with an incisional biopsy in the vulvar region revealing DFSP underwent a partial vulvectomy with clitoris preservation.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) has been associated with an increased risk for development of malignancy, especially malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. In addition, recently, literature has demonstrated an increased risk of breast cancer in women with NF1. The present paper shows a 53-year-old woman with NF1 who presented with metaplastic breast carcinoma and developed multiple metastases, including mandible.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of elective neck dissection compared with observation (control group) in selected cases of early carcinoma of the oral tongue and floor of the mouth. It was a retrospective analysis of 222 patients who had the tumour resected (161 also had elective neck dissection). Occult lymph node metastases were detected in 33/161 (21%), and neck recurrences were diagnosed in 10 of the 61 patients in the control group (16%).
