In the emergency department, physicians evaluate patients who have experienced nonfatal strangulation resulting from sexual assault or intimate partner violence. Given the prevalence and potential consequences of nonfatal strangulation injuries, physicians need confidence in their decision-making for these patients. Previous educational interventions effectively improved physician knowledge of sexual assault and intimate partner violence patients; however, no studies have been conducted with the goal of improving physician knowledge about nonfatal strangulation injuries in this population.

Inhalation of prions into the nasal cavity is an efficient route of infection. Following inhalation of infectious prions, animals develop disease with a similar incubation period compared with per os exposure, but with greater efficiency. To identify the reason for this increased efficiency, we identified neural structures that uniquely innervate the nasal cavity and neural structures known to mediate neuroinvasion following oral infection and used immunohistochemistry to determine the temporal and spatial accumulation of prions from hamster tissue sections containing cell bodies and axons at 2-week intervals following prion exposure.

Prenatal prediction of coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is challenging. Methods identifying prenatal CoA have high sensitivity with significant false positives. We previously derived prenatal aortic arch angles for identifying CoA with high sensitivity and specificity and aim to validate these angles and compare them with a model utilizing ascending aorta (AAo) and isthmus (Aoi) measures.

Precise delineation of central and branch pulmonary artery anatomy, patent ductus arteriosus, and major aorto-pulmonary collateral artery anatomy in the fetal diagnosis of pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect is challenging but important to prenatal counseling and postnatal management. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of fetal echocardiography to determine these anatomical nuances in pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect. This was a retrospective, single-institution, 10-year chart review of consecutive prenatal diagnosis of pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect for assessment of pulmonary artery, patent ductus arteriosus, and major aorto-pulmonary collateral artery anatomy and comparison with postnatal imaging including echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, and computerized tomography angiography.

Purpose: To provide comparative prognostic information of coronary atherosclerotic plaque volume and stenosis assessment in patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD).

Methods: We followed 372 patients with suspected or known CAD enrolled in the CORE320 study for 2 years after baseline 320-detector row cardiac CT scanning and invasive quantitative coronary angiography (QCA). CT images were analyzed for coronary calcium scanning (CACS), semi-automatically derived total percent atheroma volume (PAV), segment stenosis score (SSS), in addition to traditional stenosis assessment (≥ 50%) by CT and QCA for (1) 30-day revascularization and (2) major adverse cardiac events (MACE).

Background The predictive value of coronary artery calcium ( CAC ) has been widely studied; however, little is known about specific characteristics of CAC that are most predictive. We aimed to determine the independent associations of Agatston score, CAC volume, CAC area, CAC mass, and CAC density score with major adverse cardiac events in patients with suspected coronary artery disease. Methods and Results A total of 379 symptomatic participants, aged 45 to 85 years, referred for invasive coronary angiography, who underwent coronary calcium scanning and computed tomography angiography as part of the CORE 320 (Combined Noninvasive Coronary Angiography and Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Using 320 Detector Computed Tomography) study, were included.

Reports such as call for integration of course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) into biology curricula and less emphasis on "cookbook" laboratories. CUREs, often characterized by a single open-ended research question, allow students to develop hypotheses, design experiments, and collaborate with peers. Conversely, "cookbook" labs incentivize task completion and have pre-determined experimental outcomes.

An orb web's prey capture thread features tiny glue droplets, each formed of an adhesive glycoprotein core surrounded by an aqueous layer. Small molecules in the aqueous layer confer droplet hygroscopicity and maintain glycoprotein viscoelasticity, causing droplet volume and glycoprotein performance to track changes in environmental humidity. Droplet extension combines with that of a thread's supporting flagelliform fibers to sum the adhesive forces of multiple droplets, creating an effective adhesive system.

Objectives: To analyse the implementation, applicability and accuracy of the pretest probability calculation provided by NICE clinical guideline 95 for decision making about imaging in patients with chest pain of recent onset.

Methods: The definitions for pretest probability calculation in the original Duke clinical score and the NICE guideline were compared. We also calculated the agreement and disagreement in pretest probability and the resulting imaging and management groups based on individual patient data from the Collaborative Meta-Analysis of Cardiac CT (CoMe-CCT).

Iterative reconstruction has been shown to reduce image noise compared with traditional filtered back projection with quantum denoising software (FBP/QDS+) in CT imaging but few comparisons have been made in the same patients without the influence of interindividual factors. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of adaptive iterative dose reduction in 3-dimensional (AIDR 3D) and FBP/QDS+-based image reconstruction on image quality in the same patients. We randomly selected 100 patients enrolled in the coronary evaluation using 320-slice CT study who underwent CT coronary angiography using prospectively electrocardiogram triggered image acquisition with a 320-detector scanner.

In the bathypelagic realm of the ocean, the role of marine snow as a carbon and energy source for the deep-sea biota and as a potential hotspot of microbial diversity and activity has not received adequate attention. Here, we collected bathypelagic marine snow by gentle gravity filtration of sea water onto 30 μm filters from ~1000 to 3900 m to investigate the relative distribution of eukaryotic microbes. Compared with sediment traps that select for fast-sinking particles, this method collects particles unbiased by settling velocity.

Background: Total atherosclerotic plaque burden assessment by CT angiography (CTA) is a promising tool for diagnosis and prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) but its validation is restricted to small clinical studies. We tested the feasibility of semi-automatically derived coronary atheroma burden assessment for identifying patients with hemodynamically significant CAD in a large cohort of patients with heterogenous characteristics.

Methods: This study focused on the CTA component of the CORE320 study population.

Background: Establishing the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in symptomatic patients allows appropriately allocating preventative measures. Single-photon emission computed tomography (CT)-acquired myocardial perfusion imaging (SPECT-MPI) is frequently used for the evaluation of CAD, but coronary CT angiography (CTA) has emerged as a valid alternative.

Methods And Results: We compared the accuracy of SPECT-MPI and CTA for the diagnosis of CAD in 391 symptomatic patients who were prospectively enrolled in a multicenter study after clinical referral for cardiac catheterization.

Many spider orb-webs are exposed to sunlight and the potentially damaging effects of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. We examined the effect of UVB on the viscoelastic glycoprotein core of glue droplets deposited on the prey capture threads of these webs, hypothesizing that webs built by species that occupy sunny habitats are less susceptible to UVB damage than are webs built by species that prefer shaded forest habitats or by nocturnal species. Threads were tested shortly after being collected in the early morning and after being exposed to UVB energy equivalent to a day of summer sun and three times this amount.
