Introduction: Providers can evaluate patients who sustain trauma during outdoor activities by using the extended focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) and the limited knee ultrasound. Remote tele-mentored ultrasound (RTMUS) can help minimally trained providers in the wilderness if they have difficulty obtaining a view or have questions about the interpretation of an image. The goal of our study was to determine the feasibility of using RTMUS to teach the FAST exam and knee ultrasound exam to ultrasound-naive medical students during a wilderness medicine outdoor activity.

Study Objective: To evaluate the clinical effect, safety, and clinical outcomes of focused transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in the evaluation of critically ill patients in the emergency department (ED) and ICUs.

Methods: We established a prospective, multicenter, observational registry involving adult critically ill patients in whom focused TEE was performed for evaluation of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), inhospital cardiac arrest, evaluation of undifferentiated shock, hemodynamic monitoring, and/or procedural guidance in the ED, ICU, or operating room setting. The primary objective of the current investigation was to evaluate the clinical influence and safety of focused, point-of-care TEE in critically ill patients.

Background: Primary sex determination is the developmental process that results in the sexual differentiation of the gonads. Vertebrate sex determination is generally considered to follow the model based on the mammalian system, where a sex-specific master regulatory gene activates one of the two different gene networks that underlie testis and ovary differentiation.

Summary: It is now known that, while many of the molecular components of these pathways are conserved across different vertebrates, a wide variety of different trigger factors are utilized to initiate primary sex determination.

The gill of teleost fish is a multifunctional organ involved in many physiological processes, including protection of the mucosal gill surface against pathogens and other environmental antigens by the gill-associated lymphoid tissue (GIALT). Climate change associated phenomena, such as increasing frequency and magnitude of harmful algal blooms (HABs) put extra strain on gill function, contributing to enhanced fish mortality and fish kills. The chicken has a Z-W sex chromosome system, in which the males are the homogametic sex (ZZ) and the females the heterogametic sex (ZW). The smaller W chromosome is generally considered to be a highly degraded copy of the Z chromosome that retains around 28-30 homologous protein-coding genes' These Z-W homologues are thought to have important, but undefined, roles in development, and here we explore the role of one of these genes, VCP (Valosin Containing Protein) in gonadogenesis. We established RNA expression levels of both Z and W VCP homologues, the levels of VCP protein, and the cellular localization of VCP protein in male and female embryonic gonads during development.

We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the magnitude of this association and identify moderators, review strengths and weaknesses in conceptual and measurement approaches, and provide recommendations.
