Mining, land restoration and sustainable development in isolated islands: An industrial ecology perspective on extractive transitions on Nauru.

In this empirically grounded perspective, we explore how, if managed correctly, mining might go beyond a straight conversion of finite natural capital to financial resources. We suggest a process where mineral extraction could act as a catalyst for more diversified growth and even serve as a basis to restore forms of 'natural capital' it had previously diminished. The case in point-small in scale but significant in consequence-is the particularly challenging instance of the small-island state of Nauru, which has a very negative history of socio-ecological impacts of phosphate mining.

The older HIV-positive adult: a critical review of the medical literature.

Older adults make up an ever-growing proportion of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the United States, with approximately 25% of infections occurring in adults over the age of 50 years. Although there is a preliminary body of literature addressing the socioeconomic and prognostic issues of HIV infection in older adults, very little rigorous scientific research has looked at the significant clinical issues relevant to this growing population. Treatment of older adults is complicated by an increased prevalence of medical comorbidities, but little is known about the effects of complicated medication regimens in this group, as they are routinely excluded from clinical trials of newer HIV medications.

A survey of MSM HIV prevention outreach workers in Chennai, India.

The present formative study sought to describe issues relevant to HIV prevention among men who have sex with men (MSM) in South India by surveying 62 MSM outreach workers from three non governmental organizations in Chennai. Although 92% reported having sex with men, only 74% identified as gay and 27% were married. Only half of these men reported having been tested for HIV.

Integrin connections map: to infinity and beyond.

Integrins are transmembrane proteins that serve as primary sensors of the extracellular matrix (ECM) environment. In response to interactions with the ECM, integrins initiate signaling pathways that regulate cell migration, growth, and survival. Advances in imaging have contributed to the understanding of the dynamic nature of these cell-ECM interactions and the complexes that form at these sites and have provided insights into their regulation and signal organizing functions.
