Importance: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among surgeons are markedly increasing. Several proposed interventions to reduce WMSDs among surgeons have been studied, but few follow an occupational therapy-oriented approach addressing biomechanical, psychophysical, and psychosocial risk factors.

Background: Current knowledge of facial nerve topography between the stylomastoid foramen to the pes anserinus is very limited. Elucidating this segment's intraneural microanatomy may be advantageous in certain clinical settings: the planning of nerve grafts for gaps extending from the proximal facial nerve trunk to distal branches or in determining coaptation sites for hypoglossal jump grafts to provide selective upper and lower facial tone. This study is the first to provide high-definition intraneural topography of the aforementioned segment to optimize reconstructive outcomes.

The SpinVessel system provides a methodology using pulsed radial flow to gently mix and uniformly suspend particulates (cells, magnetic beads, silica beads, and microcarrier beads) for automated assays. SpinVessels are well suited for aliquoting on robotic liquid handlers and with robotic reagent dispensers, as well as manually. The SpinVessel system combines two critical features: (1) special internal side fins and projections in the bottom of the vessels and (2) an instrument that quickly spins the vessels and repeatedly reverses the spin direction.

Introduction: Pulmonary sequestration (PS) has been treated for many years with conventional surgical removal of the ectopic lung tissue and ligation of aberrant vessels that arise from the aorta. There is evidence, especially in English-language literature that supports the use of transcatheter arterial embolization through a device for occlusion of the anomalous vessel, as a safe option and definitive treatment for intralobar PS.

Objectives: We evaluated risk factors for residual neoplasia on first follow-up endoscopy after colonic endoscopic mucosal resections (EMRs).

Methods: This retrospective study in a high-volume EMR tertiary-referral center examined EMRs on 423 colonic lesions in 313 patients.

Results: Residual neoplasia at first follow-up endoscopy was present following 12% of colonic EMRs.

Background: Previous studies examining the effect of fellow participation on adenoma detection rate in colonoscopy have yielded conflicting results, and factors such as adenoma size and location have not been rigorously evaluated.

Objective: To examine whether fellow participation during screening, surveillance, or diagnostic colonoscopy affects overall, size-specific, or location-specific adenoma or polyp detection rate.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 2430 colonoscopies performed in our ambulatory surgical center between September 2006 and December 2007, comparing adenoma and polyp detection rates of colonoscopies performed by fellows with supervising staff endoscopists (n = 318) with colonoscopies performed by staff endoscopists without fellow participation (n = 2112).

Background & Aims: Adenoma detection rates might be improved through use of high-definition colonoscopy, which can detect subtle mucosal changes. We investigated whether the use of high-definition white-light (HDWL) colonoscopy resulted in a higher rate of adenoma detection than standard-definition white-light (SDWL) colonoscopy in a clinical practice setting.

A five year retrospective review of all exposures to a high concentration phenol disinfectant (Creolin Disinfectant 26% phenol) reported to a regional poison center located 96 cases, with 16 cases lost to follow up. There were 60 oral-only exposures, 7 dermal-only exposures and 12 oral/dermal exposure. One patient was an inhalation exposure.

The anti-inflammatory agent tenidap has previously been shown to inhibit antigen-induced secretion in tumor mast cells. We have investigated the possibility that this effect is due to modulation of the Ca2+ response in mast cells and in particular that tenidap might be an inhibitor of the Ca2+ influx pathway or channel in these and other non-excitable cells. Tenidap inhibited the antigen-induced increase in intracellular Ca2+ measured both in cell suspensions and at the single cell level using digital imaging of Fura-2 fluorescence.

The use of rural training tracks (RTTs) in family practice residencies is a new strategy (beginning in the late 1980s) to increase the number of residents selecting rural careers. The authors describe the four residencies (in Washington, Nebraska, New York, and Kentucky) that have established RTTs. The first residency year is completed in an urban tertiary care center, and the second and third years are completed in a distant rural community wherein the primary faculty are the members of a rural family practice group.

Reported are the results of two uncontrolled outcome studies that evaluate the effectiveness of inpatient psychiatric treatment of children and adolescents suffering from clinical depression. Study 1 employed a sample of 7 children and measured outcome with the Depression Self-rating Scale (DSRS), the Hopelessness Scale for Children (HSC), and the Global Asssessment of Functioning (GAF) scale, which were administered to each child upon admission and again at discharge. Inpatient treatment involved multiple interventions, including individual psychotherapy, medication, milieu therapy and token economy, and other procedures.

Interferons can suppress the replication of certain retroviruses, including oncogenic murine retroviruses. In recent studies of the Lentivirinae subfamily of Retroviridae, an endogenous, immunologically induced interferon was found to restrict the replication of visna in macrophages.
