The bovine rumen hosts a diverse microbiota, which is highly specialized in the degradation of lignocellulose. Ruminal bacteria, in particular, are well equipped to deconstruct plant cell wall polysaccharides. Nevertheless, their potential role in the breakdown of the lignin network has never been investigated.

[Spouses' health-related quality of life evaluation of elderly patients with depression].

Objective: To assess and compare the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of spouses living at home with a patient aged 65 years or more suffering from a major depressive disorder and that of matched controls. Secondly, to investigate whether the HRQoL of spouses was correlated with the assessment of their partner's depression, their own depression and the self-perceived level of care burden experienced by the caregiver partner.

Methods: Assessment of patients was based on the clinical diagnosis of a major depressive disorder as established by the criteria of the DSM-IV-TR, the geriatric depression scale GDS-15 and the LEIPAD questionnaire specific to subjects aged 65 or over living at home.

Yarrowia lipolytica, a non-conventional yeast with a promising biotechnological potential, is able to undergo metabolic and morphological changes in response to environmental conditions. The effect of pH perturbations of different types (pulses, Heaviside) on the dynamic behavior of Y. lipolytica W29 strain was characterized under two modes of culture: batch and continuous.

DIAMED: a probabilistic diagnostic aid system on the web.

DIAMED is a system to assist the physicians in the diagnostic process using probabilistic networks as knowledge representation. These networks make it possible to reason on medical data by applying Bayesian methods and to take into account uncertainties of the facts in the resolution of the clinical cases. The proposed model re-uses knowledge contained in an existing knowledge base (ADM).

Knowledge acquisition to qualify Unified Medical Language System interconceptual relationships.

Adding automatically relations between concepts from a database to a knowledge base such as the Unified Medical Language System can be very useful to increase the consistency of the latter one. But the transfer of qualified relationships is more interesting. The challenge is to give medical information and informatics tools to all medical students in the clinical wards of the University Hospital. At first, nine wards were connected to the medical school server which is linked to the Internet.

A microcomputer teaching and decision-support system for emergency medicine: use of hypermedia and artificial intelligence in combination.

Hospital emergency units are submitted to a continuous intensive and polyvalent practice of medicine. In addition to the few experienced physicians, the medical staff is often made up of young and unskilled students and residents. The ability to reach at any time a wide and flexible knowledge is of the utmost importance to improve the quality of care given to patients and to perfect bedside teaching.

A computer-assisted case report and diagnosis system: sharing the knowledge database ADM and using hypermedia techniques.

When the medical students work in hospital units, they must learn the general medical practice in the care of the patient.
