Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq) has accelerated the characterization of cellular phenotypes in the pig respiratory tract under both healthy and diseased conditions. However, combining scRNAseq with recovery of paired T cell receptor (TCR) α and β chains as well as B cell receptor (BCR) heavy and light chains to interrogate their repertoires has not to our knowledge been demonstrated for pigs.

Inertial confinement fusion experiments taking place at the National Ignition Facility are generating ever increasing amounts of fusion energy, with the deuterium tritium fusion neutron yield growing a hundredfold over the past ten years. Strategies must be developed to mitigate this harsh environment's deleterious effects on the operation and the performance of the time-resolved x-ray imagers deployed in the National Ignition Facility target bay to record the dynamics of the implosions. We review the evolution of these imagers in recent years and detail some of the past and present efforts undertaken to maintain or improve the quality of the experimental data collected on high neutron yield experiments.

Unconventional life history in a migratory shorebird: desegregating reproduction and migration.

Conventional life-history theory predicts that energy-demanding events such as reproduction and migration must be temporally segregated to avoid resource limitation. Here, we provide, to our knowledge, the first direct evidence of 'itinerant breeding' in a migratory bird, an incredibly rare breeding strategy (less than 0.1% of extant bird species) that involves the temporal overlap of migratory and reproductive periods of the annual cycle.

To maintain patient flow during the COVID-19 pandemic, rapid and accurate decisions for the safe triage of geriatrics patients was essential as turnaround times for laboratory testing was ineffective at supporting rapid clinical decision-making for transfer of care. Thus, to mitigate and inform these clinical decisions, a quality improvement collaborative project with the geriatrics and virology department was conducted at the Frailty Assessment Unit (FAU) at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The goal was to facilitate patient triage during transfer of care with the introduction of Point of Care testing (POCT).

First-ever satellite tracking of Black Terns (): Insights into home range and habitat selection.

Understanding animal movement across the annual cycle is critical for developing appropriate conservation plans, but the large size and high cost of tracking devices can limit the spatial and temporal resolution at which movement data can be collected, especially for small avian species. Furthermore, for species with low breeding site fidelity, the ability to obtain tracking data from small, archival tags is hindered by low recapture rates. We deployed satellite tracking devices on four adult Black Terns (), a declining waterbird with low site fidelity, to examine space use and selection of resources within individual breeding home ranges.

Additionally, decision-making during migration may influence subsequent fitness (reproductive success and/or survival). Examining the effects of fine-scale weather variables on individuals throughout the year could help identify stages of the annual cycle when species may be most affected by weather.

Neurotropic melanoma arising from a neurocristic hamartoma.

Neurotropic melanoma is a rare type of malignant melanoma with nerve invasion or neural differentiation. Neurocristic cutaneous hamartoma is a rare, benign tumor of the skin and superficial soft tissue that arises from aberrant migration of neural crest cells. We report a rare case of a 74-year-old man with a clinically diagnosed giant congenital nevus of the right mid-back, histopathologically confirmed to be a neurocristic cutaneous hamartoma, who developed neurotropic spindle cell melanoma within the lesion.

Accumulation of plastics in the Earth's oceans is causing widespread disruption to marine ecosystems. To help mitigate the environmental burden caused by non-degradable plastics, we have previously developed a commercially relevant polyurethane (PU) foam derived from renewable biological materials that can be depolymerized into its constituent monomers and consumed by microorganisms in soil or compost. Here we demonstrate that these same PU foams can be biodegraded by marine microorganisms in the ocean and by isolated marine microorganisms in an ex situ seawater environment.

The gut microbiome may represent a relatively untapped resource in the effort to manage and conserve threatened or endangered fish populations, including wild and hatchery-reared Pacific salmonids. To clarify this potential, we defined how steelhead trout gut microbiome composition varies across watersheds and as a function of ancestry. First, we measured this variation across watersheds using wild steelhead trout sampled from nine locations spanning three river basins.

Background: Conditions encountered en route can dramatically impact the energy that migratory species spend on movement. Migratory birds often manage energetic costs by adjusting their behavior in relation to wind conditions as they fly. Wind-influenced behaviors can offer insight into the relative importance of risk and resistance during migration, but to date, they have only been studied in a limited subset of avian species and flight types.

We present a rare coexistence of constrictive pericarditis in a patient with cystic fibrosis. Careful attention to cardiac friction rub auscultated on initial examination prompted echocardiography revealing constrictive pericarditis further confirmed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging that allowed for dedicated treatment in addition to management of his concurrent respiratory infection.
