Tumor-associated human carbonic anhydrases (hCAs), particularly isoforms hCA IX and hCA XII, are overexpressed in hypoxic regions of solid tumors and play a crucial role in regulating pH homeostasis, promoting cancer cell survival and enhancing invasiveness. These enzymes have emerged as promising therapeutic targets in cancer treatment, including photothermal therapy (PTT). PTT is a minimally invasive technique that uses light-absorbing agents to convert near-infrared (NIR) light into heat, effectively inducing localized hyperthermia and promoting cancer cell apoptosis.

Because of high mutation rates, viruses constantly adapt to new environments. When propagated in cell lines, certain viruses acquire positively charged amino acids on their surface proteins, enabling them to utilize negatively charged heparan sulfate (HS) as an attachment receptor. In this study, we used enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) as the model and demonstrated that, unlike the parental MP4 variant, the cell-adapted strong HS-binder MP4-97R/167 G does not require acidification for uncoating and releases its genome in the neutral or weakly acidic environment of early endosomes.

A Pilot Faculty Fellows Pipeline Program: Developing Nurse Educators in South Carolina.

Background: Several regions across the United States, especially in the Southeast, are facing a critical nurse and nurse-faculty shortage.

Method: The College of Nursing at the University of South Carolina (USC) created the Nurse Faculty Fellow Pipeline Program (NFFPP) to increase the nursing faculty workforce. Additional faculty are needed to educate nurses to meet the state's needs.

In recent decades, epidemics and pandemics have multiplied throughout the world, with viruses generally being the primary responsible agents. Among these, influenza viruses play a key role, as they potentially cause severe respiratory distress, representing a major threat to public health. Our study aims to develop new broad-spectrum antivirals against influenza to improve the response to viral disease outbreaks.

Impacts of climate change on mangrove subsistence fisheries: a global review.

Unlabelled: Climate change will impact coastal ecosystems, threatening subsistence fisheries including those in mangrove forests. Despite their global contributions and roles in nutrition and cultural identity, mangrove subsistence fisheries are poorly studied. Here, we offer a foundation for improving the management of mangrove subsistence fisheries to deal with the impending effects of climate change.

Veterinary programs traditionally teach gross anatomy by having students perform regional dissections on animal cadavers. Dissection is effective but also costly, time consuming, and intimidating for students. These factors, along with reduced contact hours devoted to gross anatomy, warrant investigation of more time-efficient teaching modalities.

Purpose: The mechanisms underlying a myopia control strategy using scattering lenses are unclear. Therefore, this study investigates the short-term effects of scatter lenses on central and peripheral choroidal thickness and axial length, which serve as a biomarker in myopia progression research.

Methods: In total, 23 participants underwent a 60-minute lens wear phase each to five lens conditions: medium peripheral scattering, high peripheral scattering, medium full-field scattering, high full-field scattering and control (clear lens).

The Definition of Recurrence of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Recurrence is a key outcome to evaluate the treatment effect of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). However, no consistent definition of recurrence is available in current literature or international guidelines. Therefore, the primary aim of this systematic review was to delineate the definitions of recurrence of DTC, categorized by total thyroidectomy with radioactive iodine ablation (RAI), total thyroidectomy without RAI and lobectomy, to assess if there is a generally accepted definition among these categories.

Incorporating sense of place into the management of social-ecological systems: The researchers' perspectives.

As the world around us changes, so too do the bonds that people have with their environment. These environmental bonds, or Senses of Place (SoP), are a key component of social-ecological systems (SESs). SoP has social, psychological and economic value, it impacts how people use and behave in an environment and how they respond to changes such as those caused by anthropogenic pressures.

Azolium-Porphyrin Electrosynthesis.

Electrochemical oxidation of Zn(II) 2,7,12,17-tetra-tert-butylporphyrin in the presence of a series of azole derivatives (1-methylimidazole, 1-vinyl-1H-imidazole, 2-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)pyridine, 1-methylbenzimidazole, 1-methyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole, and benzothiazole) affords the corresponding meso-substituted azolium-porphyrins in very mild conditions and good yields. It was found that these nucleophiles were strongly ligated to the zinc(II) azolium-porphyrin complexes. Thus a demetalation/remetalation procedure was performed to recover the non-azole-coordinated zinc(II) complexes.

Myxaoside A, a new triterpenoid saponin from L. (Boraginaceae).

The phytochemical study of L. led to the isolation, through chromatographic techniques, of a new triterpenoid saponin, 3--[--rhamnopyranosyl-(1→3)-(6--acetyl---glucopyranosyl)]-22-hydroxyolean-12-ene () namely Myxaoside A, together with three known compounds, Soyasaponine I (), oleanolic acid (), and 3--acetyl-oleanolic acid (). All structures were established, based on 1 & 2D-NMR spectroscopic analysis and comparison with previous published reports.

Fracture Toughness, Radiation Hardness, and Processibility of Polymers for Superconducting Magnets.

High fracture toughness at cryogenic temperature and radiation hardness can be conflicting requirements for the resins for the impregnation of superconducting magnet coils. The fracture toughness of different epoxy-resin systems at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K was measured, and their toughness was compared with that determined for a polyurethane, polycarbonate (PC) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Among the epoxy resins tested in this study, the MY750 system has the highest 77 K fracture toughness of = 4.

Influence of Aberration-Free, Narrowband Light on the Choroidal Thickness and Eye Length.

Purpose: To determine whether light chromaticity without defocus induced by longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA) is sufficient to regulate eye growth.

Methods: An interferometric setup based on a spatial light modulator was used to illuminate the dominant eyes of 23 participants for 30 minutes with three aberration-free stimulation conditions: (1) short wavelength (450 nm), (2) long wavelength (638 nm), and (3) broadband light (450-700 nm), covering a retinal area of 12°. The non-dominant eye was occluded and remained as the control eye.

How resilience is framed matters for governance of coastal social-ecological systems.

Effective governance of social-ecological systems (SES) is an enduring challenge, especially in coastal environments where accelerating impacts of climate change are increasing pressure on already stressed systems. While resilience is often proposed as a suitable framing to re-orient governance and management, the literature includes many different, and sometimes conflicting, definitions and ideas that influence how the concept is applied, especially in coastal environments. This study combines discourse analysis of the coastal governance literature and key informant interviews in Tasmania, Australia, demonstrating inconsistencies and confusion in the way that resilience is framed in coastal governance research and practice.
