Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how patients' expectations about their hip surgery results change over 10 years after they have surgery to replace their hip joint.
  • Researchers surveyed 346 patients before and after their surgery to see how satisfied they were with their recovery and their ability to do different activities.
  • They found that while expectations decreased slightly over time, most patients were still very happy with the outcomes of their surgery, which can help doctors set realistic goals for future patients.

Expanding use of immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) underscores the importance of accurate diagnosis and timely management of neurological immune-related adverse events (irAE-N). We evaluate the real-world frequency, phenotypes, co-occurring immune-related adverse events (irAEs), and long-term outcomes of severe, grade III to V irAE-N at a tertiary care center over 6 years. We analyze how our experience supports published literature and professional society guidelines.

Background: Patients' pre-operative health and physical function is known to influence their post-operative outcomes. In patients with knee osteoarthritis, pharmacological and non-pharmacological options are often not optimised prior to joint replacement. This results in some patients undergoing surgery when they are not as fit as they could be.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied if recovery signs at 6 weeks after a broken collarbone could help predict if it would heal properly in patients over 16.
  • They found that a special score called the QuickDASH was really good at indicating healing problems; a score of 40 or higher meant a higher chance of not healing.
  • If patients had none of the warning signs they looked for, only 3% were likely to have healing issues, but if they had two or more signs, the risk jumped to 60%.

Background: The position of the femoral component can influence knee kinematics by altering the posterior (PCO) and anterior condylar offset (ACO). The primary aim of this study was to assess whether the length of the cemented stem influences the sagittal position of the femoral component after revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA). The secondary aim was to determine the influence of the sagittal position on PCO and ACO.

Aims: The primary aim of this study was to assess whether pain in the contralateral knee had a clinically significant influence on the outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) according to the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score. Secondary aims were to: describe the prevalence of contralateral knee pain; identify if it clinically improves after TKA; and assess whether contralateral knee pain independently influences patient satisfaction with their TKA.

Methods: A retrospective cohort of 3,178 primary TKA patients were identified from an arthroplasty database.

The aim of this study was to identify threshold preoperative Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores that were predictive of patient dissatisfaction 1 year after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A retrospective cohort of 3,324 patients undergoing a primary TKA was identified from an established arthroplasty database. Patient demographics, comorbidities, and the WOMAC score were collected preoperatively.

Pompe disease (glycogen storage disease type II) is caused by mutations in acid α-glucosidase (GAA) resulting in lysosomal pathology and impairment of the muscular and cardio-pulmonary systems. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), the only approved therapy for Pompe disease, improves muscle function by reducing glycogen accumulation but this approach entails several limitations including a short drug half-life and an antibody response that results in reduced efficacy. To address these limitations, new treatments such as gene therapy are under development to increase the intrinsic ability of the affected cells to produce GAA.
