Background: Currently data on the risk of progression to and lifetime risk of cancer are not available for patients with young onset Barrett's esophagus (BE). Our aim was to obtain epidemiologic data on the incidence of dysplasia or adenocarcinoma in young onset BE in the Netherlands by collecting data on all histologically confirmed cases over a prolonged period of 25 years between January 1, 1991 and December 31, 2015.

Methods: Data were obtained from the Dutch National Pathology Registry.

Article Synopsis
  • Tumor-derived cell-free DNA (cfDNA) shows promise as a biomarker for personalizing treatment in metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC), but its effectiveness varies depending on the type of metastasis.
  • A study analyzed cfDNA in plasma and peritoneal fluid from CRC patients, revealing that while high cfDNA levels are common in CRC liver metastases (CRC-LM), they are significantly lower in plasma of CRC patients with peritoneal metastases (CRC-PM).
  • Findings suggest that detecting cfDNA in peritoneal fluid is more reliable for monitoring CRC-PM, offering a potential alternative for guiding treatment decisions compared to plasma analysis.

Background: The aim of this population-based study was to determine the prognostic value of the histologic subtypes mucinous (MAC), non-mucinous (AC) and signet ring cell (SRCC) adenocarcinoma among patients with appendiceal cancer.

Methods And Materials: Data from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR) of patients with primary appendiceal adenocarcinomas with MAC, AC and SRCC histologic subtype, diagnosed between 2001 and 2015 were used (n = 675). To categorize patients according to the recent histopathological classification, the NCR was linked with the Dutch Pathology Registry (PALGA).

Introduction: Repetitive electrostatic pressurised intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy with oxaliplatin (ePIPAC-OX) is offered as a palliative treatment option for patients with isolated unresectable colorectal peritoneal metastases (PM) in several centres worldwide. However, little is known about its feasibility, safety, tolerability, efficacy, costs and pharmacokinetics in this setting. This study aims to explore these parameters in patients with isolated unresectable colorectal PM who receive repetitive ePIPAC-OX as a palliative monotherapy.

Until recently, many classifications existed for the terminology and histopathologic classification of appendiceal mucinous neoplasms, mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinomas, and pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). A major accomplishment was achieved by consensus-based histopathologic classifications on behalf of the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International regarding mucinous appendiceal tumours and PMP. As different classifications were used over the years and also owing to the rare nature of these tumors, many clinicians are not familiar with the terminology and the impact on patient management.

For early esophageal adenocarcinoma, endoscopic resection is an accepted curative treatment with an excellent long-term prognosis. Case series from Japan have reported endoscopic resection of residual esophageal squamous cell carcinoma after chemoradiotherapy. This is the first report describing endoscopic resection of residual esophageal adenocarcinoma after chemoradiotherapy.

Objectives: Large biobanks with uniform collection of biomaterials and associated clinical data are essential for translational research. The Netherlands has traditionally been well organized in multicenter clinical research on pancreatic diseases, including the nationwide multidisciplinary Dutch Pancreatic Cancer Group and Dutch Pancreatitis Study Group. To enable high-quality translational research on pancreatic and periampullary diseases, these groups established the Dutch Pancreas Biobank.

Objectives: This population-based study assessed which factors were associated with pathological verification of pancreatic cancer.

Methods: All patients diagnosed with a malignancy of the pancreas between 1993 and 2010 in the South of the Netherlands (N=3321) were included.

Results: Pancreatic cancer was pathologically verified in 59% of patients.

Background: Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a malignant, often indolent vascular tumor which occurs at various anatomic sites. Based on a reciprocal translocation t (1;3)(p36;q25), a consistent WWTR1-CAMTA1 fusion gene has been found. An alternate YAP1-TFE3 fusion has been detected in a small and distinct subset of cases.

There are few epidemiological data on the dietary risk factors of Barrett's oesophagus, a precursor of oesophageal adenocarcinoma. The present study investigated the association between vegetable, fruit and nitrate intake and Barrett's oesophagus risk in a large prospective cohort. The Netherlands Cohort Study recruited 120,852 individuals aged 55-69 years in 1986.

Background: Increasing meat intake and its possible role in the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma raises the question whether meat consumption is associated with the premalignant lesion, Barrett's esophagus.

Methods: Associations between the risk of Barrett's esophagus and meat consumption, intake of N-nitrosodimethylamine, nitrite, and heme iron were examined in the Netherlands Cohort Study among 120,852 subjects aged 55 to 69 years in 1986. Exposure was measured on the basis of a 150-item food frequency questionnaire.

Aims: UroVysion(®) is a four-target fluorescence in situ hybridization technique for the detection of urothelial carcinoma (UC) in urinary cytology. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the UC detection rate of a modified UroVysion test in patients with equivocal urinary cytology. The modification comprised the addition of a cytological prescreening technique and different evaluation criteria.

Background & Aims: Barrett's esophagus (BE) increases risk for esophageal adenocarcinoma, but it is not clear how it affects risk for other cancers or overall mortality. We analyzed data from a population-based cohort of subjects with BE.

Methods: The Netherlands Cohort Study was initiated in 1986 and included 120,852 participants (55-69 years old at baseline).

Background: Barrett's esophagus (BE) is a precursor lesion of esophageal adenocarcinoma. Besides gastroesophageal reflux, possible risk factors for BE include overweight, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption. Our objective was to study these associations by using prospective data.

Objective: To investigate the association between selenium and the risk of Barrett's esophagus (BE), the precursor lesion of esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Methods: Data from the prospective Netherlands Cohort Study were used. This cohort study was initiated in 1986, when 120,852 subjects aged 55-69 years completed a questionnaire on dietary habits and lifestyle, and provided toenail clippings for the determination of baseline selenium status.
