We report the two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence rotational spectrum of the CO B 1Σ+ ← X 1Σ+ Hopfield-Birge system (v' = 0, v″ = 0) Q-branch in an ∼4850 K, atmospheric pressure plasma torch plume at thermal equilibrium in both the quenching-dominated (low laser intensity) and photoionization-dominated (high laser intensity) regimes. We provide a detailed analysis of the photophysics in these two regimes using a rate equation approach and propose modeling considerations for them as well. In the experimental spectra, distinct rotational transitions up to J″ = 83 are observed, allowing analysis over a very large range of rotational states.

We address defining and identifying students with dyslexia within the context of multi-tier systems of support (MTSS). We review proposed definitions of dyslexia, evidence for proposed definitional attributes, and emphasize the role of instructional response in identifying students with dyslexia. We identify dyslexia as individuals with specific deficits in reading and spelling single words combined with inadequate response to evidence-based instruction.

Data-based instruction (DBI) is a process in which teachers use progress data to make ongoing instructional decisions for students with learning disabilities. Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is a common form of progress monitoring, and CBM data are placed on a graph to guide decision-making. Despite the central role that graph interpretation plays in the successful implementation of DBI, relatively little attention has been devoted to investigating this skill among special education teachers.

This within-subjects experimental study investigated the relative effects of word reading and word meaning instruction (WR+WM) compared to word-reading instruction alone (WR) on the accuracy, fluency, and word meaning knowledge of 4-5 graders with dyslexia. We matched word lists on syllables, phonemes, frequency, number of definitions, and concreteness. We assigned half the words to WR and half to WR+WM.

When Treatment Adherence Matters: Interactions Among Treatment Adherence, Instructional Quality, and Student Characteristics on Reading Outcomes.

In this study, we examined the extent to which teachers' treatment adherence, instructional quality, and the interaction of these variables influenced eighth-grade students' content knowledge and reading comprehension. We examined treatment fidelity for students ( = 775) in classes randomly assigned to receive an evidence-based content area reading program called Promoting Adolescents' Comprehension of Text. Results indicate that teachers' instructional quality was a statistically significant, positive predictor of student content knowledge and reading comprehension performance, whereas teachers' treatment adherence was not.

A cost-effectiveness analysis of four approaches to universal screening for reading risk in upper elementary and middle school.

Research on universal screening in reading has primarily focused on the psychometric adequacy of screening procedures without critically considering costs and value. Educators in upper elementary and middle school have access to a great deal of extant student achievement data, which makes the evaluation of the costs associated with collecting new data for screening purposes paramount. We conducted a retrospective analysis of four approaches to reading screening using cost-effectiveness analysis.

Multitiered Systems of Support, Adaptive Interventions, and SMART Designs.

This article introduces the special section on adaptive interventions and sequential multiple-assignment randomized trial (SMART) research designs. In addition to describing the two accompanying articles, we discuss features of adaptive interventions (AIs) and describe the use of SMART design to optimize AIs in the context of multitiered systems of support (MTSS) and integrated MTSS. AI is a treatment delivery model that explicitly specifies how information about individuals should be used to decide which treatment to provide in practice.

The influence of student engagement on the effects of an inferential reading comprehension intervention for struggling middle school readers.

Although many students benefit from evidence-based reading comprehension interventions, not all students will exhibit adequate response. Moderation analysis provides a statistical approach to examine for whom and under what conditions interventions are most effective. Conducted within a parent project, which investigated the effects of an inferential reading comprehension intervention, the current study examined factors related to the deployment of students' attention as well as language status that might be associated with differential response to intervention.

Feeding of human milk is associated with improved health outcomes in preterm infants. Mothers of preterm infants have difficulty establishing and maintaining an adequate milk supply. The Differential Importance of Component Skills on Reading Comprehension Test Performance Among Struggling Adolescent Readers.

Reading comprehension tests vary in format and characteristics, which may influence the extent to which component skills are involved in test performance. With students in Grades 6 to 8 with reading difficulties, dominance analyses examined the differential importance of component reading and language skills (word- and text-reading fluency, vocabulary, listening comprehension, and working memory) on several standardized tests of reading comprehension: , 4th edition (GMRT), , , 5th edition (GORT-5), and the (TOSREC). Students' word- and text-reading fluency skills were generally the most dominant predictors of performance on most reading comprehension tests, especially those with a time limit (GMRT and TOSREC).

The Global Health Security Agenda aims to improve countries' ability to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats by building or strengthening core capacities required by the International Health Regulations (2005). One of those capacities is the development of surveillance systems to rapidly detect and respond to occurrences of diseases with epidemic potential. Since 2015, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has worked with partners in Sierra Leone to assist the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in developing an Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system.

Production and characterization of drug-loaded toroidal vortices from a novel ocular drug delivery device.

For the last several decades, the predominant method for delivering medicine to the surface of the eye has been the standard multiuse eye dropper. While being the most popular, this method has significant limitations. Recently, an effort has been made to explore the use of a directed toroidal vortex or "smoke ring" aerosol delivery system that may help overcome these limitations and enable delivery of precise amounts of formulation and drug to the ocular surface.

Mentoring relationships can have important effects on adolescents' psychosocial and academic outcomes; however, the transactions within mentoring relationships that may account for impact on psychosocial and academic outcomes are not well understood. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Mentor Support Provisions Scale (MSPS), a tool for assessing the types of support that mentors provide. Exploratory factor analyses and confirmatory factor analyses were used to determine measure dimensionality.

Advancing Stage 2 Research on Measures for Monitoring Kindergarten Reading Progress.

Although several measures exist for frequently monitoring early reading progress, little research has specifically investigated their technical properties when administered on a frequent basis with kindergarten students. In this study, kindergarten students ( N = 137) of whom the majority was receiving supplemental intervention for reading skills were monitored using Letter Sound Fluency, Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, Word Reading Fluency, Nonsense Word Fluency, Highly Decodable Passages, and Spelling on a biweekly basis between February and May. Acceptable reliability was observed for all measures.

Few studies on naphthalene vapor fluorescence have been conducted at low temperature and pressure conditions. The current study focuses on conducting measurements of naphthalene quenching and absorption cross section in a temperature- and pressure-regulated test cell with 266 nm laser excitation. The test-cell measurements were of the naphthalene-fluorescence lifetime and integrated fluorescence signal over the temperature range of 100 to 525 K and pressure range of 1 to 40 kPa in air.

The Spectrum of Psychoanalytic Therapies: For the Person Behind the Diagnosis.

Therapies based on psychoanalytic theory and practice are individualized to the unique needs of each patient. They are best viewed on a continuum, a spectrum of approaches that are modulated according to the difficulties and the character structure of each person as they manifest themselves at that moment in the person's history. As people change over the course of treatment, the treatment modality may evolve accordingly.

A Video-conferencing Peer Consultation Group for Psychotherapy by Early-Career Psychiatrists.

To enhance the further development of psychodynamic psychotherapy skills in early-career psychiatrists (ECPs), the author describes a project being initiated by the American College of Psychoanalysts. The format will be biweekly peer consultation groups in which an experienced psychoanalyst will participate. The focus will be on actual case experiences of the ECPs, drawn from their work with any patient with whom psychotherapy skills are being used.
