A survey of the incidence and prevalence of non-melanocytic skin cancer in Geraldton, Western Australia, was undertaken in November 1987. All residents aged 40 to 64 years whose names were on the electoral roll on August 1, 1987 were invited to undergo a whole-body skin examination by a dermatologist. When a skin cancer was suspected, participants were referred for treatment to their usual medical practitioner.

The single site for N-linked glycosylation of the beta-subunit of bovine LH (LH beta) was disrupted by oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis to assess its potential roles in the biosynthesis, transport, and hormonal activity of the LH alpha/beta heterodimer. Pulsechase studies performed with stably transfected Chinese hamster ovary cells that expressed both alpha-subunit (fully glycosylated) and nonglycosylated LH beta revealed that turnover, transport, and secretion of newly synthesized, nonglycosylated LH beta were effectively blocked over a 22-h span. Free nonglycosylated LH beta, like free wild-type LH beta, was sequestered inside the cell; therefore, the intracellular retention of uncombined LH beta-subunit is not due to a signal located within the N-glycan moiety.

Effects of season and photoperiod on the anterior pituitary gland and testes were studied by responses to exogenous GnRH. Stallions were assigned to one of three treatments: 1) control, exposed to natural day length; 2) S-L, 8 h of light and 16 h dark (8:16) for 20 wk beginning July 16, 1982 then 16:8 from December 2, 1982 until March 5, 1984; or 3) S-S, 8:16 from July 16, 1982 until March 5, 1984. Approximately every 8 wk, stallions were administered GnRH (2 micrograms/kg BW) and blood was sampled at 20-min intervals for 2 h before and 8 h after GnRH administration.

A 46 year old man with Crohn's disease developed a widespread pustular eruption associated with intermittent fever and arthritis. Histological examination demonstrated cutaneous vasculitis with leukocytoclasia, and IgM and C3 on direct immunofluorescence. This is characteristic of the bowel-associated dermatosis-arthritis syndrome, also known as the bowel bypass syndrome without bypass, a recently described complication of inflammatory bowel disease.

The interrelationships among education, smoking, and non-cardiovascular (non-CVD) mortality were examined in middle-aged white males from the Chicago Peoples Gas Company Study (PG), the Chicago Western Electric Company Study (WE), and the Chicago Heart Association Detection Project in Industry (CHA). In each study, college graduates had the lowest prevalence of current smokers and the highest prevalence of former smokers. The associations between education and smoking were strongest in CHA, a study with baseline measurements 10-14 years after those of PG and WE and 3-8 years after the US Surgeon General's report on smoking and health in 1964.

In a double-blind study, heparin sodium was compared with 0.9% sodium chloride injection for use in maintaining patency of indwelling devices for intermittent intravenous infusion. Adult patients who required intermittent intravenous devices were randomly assigned to receive 1 mL of a heparin sodium 100 units/mL flush solution or a 0.

Influence of day length on seasonal endocrine responses were studied using stallions (seven per group). Treatments included 1) control, with natural day length; 2) 8 h light and 16 h dark (8:16) for 20 wk beginning July 16, 1982 then 16:8 from December 2, 1982 until March 5, 1984 (S-L); or 3) 8:16 from July 16, 1982 until March 5, 1984 (S-S). Blood was sampled hourly for 5 h every 4 wk; sera were pooled within horse, and luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone were quantified.

To investigate the influence of daylength on the seasonal reproductive cycle of stallions, 21 stallions were assigned to one of three treatments: control, ambient (natural) photoperiod; S-L, 8 h light and 16 h dark (8:16) for 20 wk beginning July 16, 1982 then 16:8 from December 2, 1982 until March 5, 1984; S-S, 8:16 from July 16, 1982 until March 1984. Temperature was not controlled and was similar for all groups. Total scrotal width (TSW) was measured every 4 wk throughout the experiment.

Clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses actually is a well identified soft tissue tumor. A primary orbital involvement is presented, with an optical and electron microscopic study. The orbital topography of such a tumor seems to be an exceptional opportunity.

A rapid, novel method is described by which large numbers of intact, viable, individual hair follicles may be isolated from rat skin. Follicles are freed from the surrounding connective tissue by shearing, which is effected by repeated cutting with a loosely fitting pair of scissors, and collected individually under liquid using gentle aspiration. Ultrastructural analysis indicates that the follicles are sheared away from the surrounding dermis in the region of the connective tissue capsule which encircles the hair.

Corneal dysplasia has been recently reported. Clinically, it is characterized by a progressive epithelial corneal opacity with pearly or greyish white coloration. Its topography may be either next to either far from the limbus.

Treatment of bacteriological-grade plastic with concentrated sulphuric acid is a well known technique which increases the wettability of the surface and renders it suitable for eukaryotic cell adhesion. We have noticed that these substrata present a distinctive surface topography in the presence of a serum supplement under normal culture conditions. The adsorbed serum layer is comprised of fine furrows and ridges and the influence of adherent cells on this layer leads to minute tears and distortions in the direction of the corrugations.

Three cases of corneal perforation in keratomycosis are reported. In the first two cases the etiological diagnosis had been made from the anatomo-pathological examination of the excised corneal buttons. The mycotic origin in the third case was known before perforation from corneal cultures.

Arizona occupational and physical therapists were surveyed about their needs for education in arthritis. Responses to statements regarding attitudes, knowledge, willingness to learn, and preferred methods of learning were subjected to chi-square analysis. The results showed that a significant number of both occupational and physical therapists are deficient in knowledge about the disease and maintain negative attitudes about patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

The performance of the Bentley BOS-5 pediatric oxygenator was evaluated on the basis of its response to maintain arterial pH between 7.35 and 7.45, arterial pO(2) between 100 and 200 mm Hg, and arterial pCO(2) between 35 and 45 mm Hg (Texas Heart Institute perfusion protocol).

The new classifications adopted for lymphoid tumors now include a particular type of proliferative process: immunoblastosarcoma. This tumor is not a rare occurrence in the orbit, as shown by the two cases reported, and possesses sufficiently specific clinical and histologicas characteristics to justify its appearance in a separate class. The cytological and histological characteristics of the immunoblasts from which it develops are described.
