Background: Bile duct injury after hepatic artery thrombosis (HAT) in liver transplantation is believed to be caused by ischemia predominantly. We aimed to define the involvement of bile secretory dysfunction in the pathogenesis of liver injury after HAT.
Methods: In a murine model, the main hepatic artery, the extrahepatic peribiliary plexus, or both arterial connections to the liver were interrupted (n=5 for each group).
Due to the critical shortage of deceased donor grafts, clinicians are continually expanding the criteria for an acceptable liver donor to meet the waiting list demands. However, the reduced ischemic tolerance of those extended criteria grafts jeopardizes organ viability during cold storage. Machine perfusion has been developed to limit ischemic liver damage but despite its proven biochemical benefit, machine liver perfusion is not yet considered clinically due to its low practicability.

Methods: We analyzed patients receiving liver grafts with severe steatosis between January 2002 and September 2006. These patients were matched 1:2 with control patients without severe steatosis according to status the waiting list, recipient age, recipient body mass index (BMI), and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted, searching MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL, as well as bibliographies of included studies, to identify randomized and non-randomized controlled trials that compared two or more surgical procedures in acute colonic obstruction.
Background: Combined fluorine 18-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography-CT imaging has been shown to be of good diagnostic value in the preoperative evaluation of patients with colorectal cancer and liver metastases. The adjunctive use of intraoperative sonography (IOUS) may have a limited impact on treatment selection in these patients.
Purpose: To compare the diagnostic performance of preoperative positron emission tomography (PET)-CT alone and PET-CT combined with IOUS in the evaluation of patients who are considered for curative resection of hepatic metastases from colorectal carcinoma.
Objectives: To examine the impact of the chosen surgical technique and of systematic versus "on-demand" placement of a primary stent on the incidence of urologic complications in adult kidney transplantation.
Methods: Data of 497 consecutive patients undergoing kidney transplantation at a single center were retrospectively analyzed with respect to urologic complications. Three different surgical strategies for the ureteroneocystostomy were compared: (1) transvesical anastomosis with stenting "on demand," (2) extravesical anastomosis with stenting "on demand," and (3) extravesical anastomosis with routine stenting.
