Article Synopsis
  • In 2015, Togo implemented a "test-and-treat" strategy to combat mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV, yet the MTCT rate was still 3.6% in 2020, prompting a study in Lomé aimed at estimating HIV seroconversion in pregnancy and identifying at-risk pregnant women.
  • The study involved a cross-sectional analysis of 3,148 umbilical cord blood samples collected from women after delivery, revealing a 3.8% seroprevalence of HIV-1, with most of the positive cases having previous knowledge of their HIV status before pregnancy.
  • The findings indicated that a majority of the HIV-positive women were on antiretroviral treatment prior

Objectives: Although oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV is being rolled out in West Africa, data on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in PrEP users are scarce. We assessed the prevalence, incidence and determinants of bacterial STIs in men who have sex with men (MSM) taking PrEP in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Togo.

Methods: A prospective cohort study among MSM initiating PrEP as part of a comprehensive HIV prevention package was conducted between 2017 and 2021 in community-based clinics in the four study countries.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health indicators related to HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis (TB) in Togo, revealing limited data from sub-Saharan Africa prior to this research.
  • It analyzed national health data from January 2019 to December 2021, employing Poisson segmented regression to evaluate changes in nine key health indicators before and during the pandemic.
  • Results showed a significant decline in six indicators, with urgent recommendations for improving healthcare system preparedness in Togo despite some maintenance of HIV, malaria, and TB services over time.

Background: According to UNAIDS, Togo halved AIDS-related deaths among children ages 0-14 from 2010 to 2020. However, available data show low dolutegravir (DTG)-containing antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage and low viral load suppression (VLS) among children living with HIV (CLHIV). We analyzed routine facility data before and after implementation of root-cause-based solutions for improving DTG coverage, viral load (VL) testing coverage, and VLS among CLHIV.

Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. We assessed (i) the prevalence of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection and associated factors, and (ii) the prevalence of vaccine-preventable HPV infections in MSM in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Togo.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2017-2018 among MSM ≥18 years old followed in community-based clinics.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to determine the prevalence of psychological distress (PD) among key populations at risk for HIV in Togo, including men who have sex with men (MSM), female sex workers (FSW), and drug users (DU), revealing mild PD in 19.9% and moderate/severe PD in 19.2% of participants.
  • - It utilized a cross-sectional bio-behavioral approach, gathering data through a standardized questionnaire and blood samples for HIV testing from 2044 participants, predominantly around 25 years old.
  • - Significant risk factors for PD included age, HIV positivity, and hazardous alcohol consumption, while higher education levels acted as protective factors; drug users were more likely to experience PD

Background: Recently, test developers have created rapid point-of-care tests that can simultaneously detect multiple infections within the same specimen using a single device. The SD BIOLINE Duo HIV/Syphilis rapid point-of-care test uses a solid-phase immunochromatographic assay to detect immunoglobulin (Ig)G, IgM, and IgA antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-specific antigens (HIV-1 gp41, sub O, HIV-2 gp36) and recombinant Treponema pallidum antigen (17 kDa) in human serum. This study was a multisite laboratory-based evaluation of the performance of SD BIOLINE HIV/Syphilis Duo test using previously characterized sera in 6 countries.
