Objective: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the role of low energy availability (LEA) in the interplay between depression and disordered eating/eating disorders (DE/EDs) among female athletes. The International Olympic Committee consensus statement on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) identified depression as both an outcome of LEA and a secondary risk factor for REDs. However, the direct link between LEA and depression has yet to be fully established.

Article Synopsis
  • In patients with COPD, impaired left ventricular (LV) filling can be categorized into two patterns: small LV size and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), both linked to increased all-cause mortality.
  • A study involving 1,752 COPD patients found that 8% had small LV, 16% had HFpEF features, and 45% had normal cardiac function, with those having small LV or HFpEF showing significantly higher mortality rates.
  • Small LV is an independent predictor of mortality, contrasting with HFpEF as patients with small LV exhibit reduced LV filling but normal filling pressure and lower biomarker levels.

Objective: To quantify the effect of early rescue surfactant administration techniques for preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) from a health care delivery system perspective.

Methods: A cost-consequence model was developed based on previously published literature to compare the health economic impact of implementing early surfactant administration strategies vs standard surfactant administration via endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation (MV).

Results: Early rescue surfactant treatment strategies are associated with a decrease in the number of patients requiring MV, cumulative MV days, and rate of neonatal complications.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed data from the COMPERA registry, finding that improvements in key health measures after treatment were more significant in patients without comorbidities compared to those with 1-4 comorbidities.
  • * Despite the lesser improvements in patients with comorbidities, the study indicates that those patients can still benefit from PAH therapy, and a 4-strata risk prediction tool effectively assesses survival across all patient groups.

How fast the Northern Hemisphere (NH) forest biome tracks strongly warming climates is largely unknown. Regional studies reveal lags between decades and millennia. Here we report a conundrum: Deglacial forest expansion in the NH extra-tropics occurs approximately 4000 years earlier in a transient MPI-ESM1.

The fungal genus is typically associated with ectothermic animals such as amphibians and reptiles. In rare cases, it can cause infections in humans, which are often misdiagnosed. Although usually restricted to tropical and subtropical countries, infections have recently been more frequently reported in hot-dry regions such as Arizona and Saudi Arabia.

Background: Current research on muscle dysmorphia (MD) has focused on restrained eating behaviors and has adopted a primarily male perspective. Despite initial evidence, the role of possible binge eating associated with MD has only been scarcely investigated. To extend the transdiagnostic and cross-gender approaches and address the dearth in research related to MD, this study investigated the association between MD psychopathology and binge eating in men and women.

Background: Among patients meeting diagnostic criteria for idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH), there is an emerging lung phenotype characterised by a low diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) and a smoking history. The present study aimed at a detailed characterisation of these patients.

Methods: We analysed data from two European pulmonary hypertension registries, COMPERA (launched in 2007) and ASPIRE (from 2001 onwards), to identify patients diagnosed with IPAH and a lung phenotype defined by a DLCO of less than 45% predicted and a smoking history.

IPED consumers seek medical advice when uncertain as to their use. Due to shame or fear of stigmatization IPED consumers are often reluctant to talk about their drug use; they fear prejudice and a lack of experience when caring for this specific patient group. In order to strengthen trust, a non-judgmental, non-stigmatizing and supportive attitude is essential.
