Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 2097 patients with clinical symptoms of UTIs during (n = 1144) and after (n = 953) the National Action Plan on AMR 2017-2022. Quantitative urine culture was done to isolate significant bacteria causing UTI, which were then identified to the species level and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility.

Recent reports have indicated a rise of invasive disease caused by serotype a (Hia) in North America and some European countries. The whole-genome sequences for a total of 410 invasive Hia isolates were obtained from 12 countries spanning the years of 1998 to 2019 and underwent phylogenetic and comparative genomic analysis in order to characterize the major strains causing disease and the genetic variation present among factors contributing to virulence and antimicrobial resistance. Among 410 isolate sequences received, 408 passed our quality control and underwent genomic analysis.

Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria meningitidis, which are typically transmitted via respiratory droplets, are leading causes of invasive diseases, including bacteraemic pneumonia and meningitis, and of secondary infections subsequent to post-viral respiratory disease. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic the routine surveillance system for infectious diseases had to be adapted. The disease was unknown before the first cases were reported under a catch-all notification requirement for new and threatening pathogens and diseases, but specific notification requirements for SARS-CoV‑2 detection by laboratories as well as for suspect cases of COVID-19 diagnosed by physicians were soon integrated in the infectious diseases protection act. This article describes how the notification system for infectious diseases was adapted in 2020 to meet the requirements of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated a great deal of interest in ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) as an important means to disinfect air and surfaces. The traditional lamp employed for UVGI has been the low-pressure mercury-discharge lamp that emits primarily at 254 nm in the ultraviolet photobiological band UV-C (100-280 nm).
