Recent studies have demonstrated that cannabinoids are potentially effective in the treatment of various neurological conditions, and cannabidiol (CBD), one of the most studied compounds, has been proposed as a non-toxic option. However, the adverse effects of CBD on neurodevelopmental processes have rarely been studied in cell culture systems. To better understand CBD's influence on neurodevelopment, we exposed neural progenitor cells (NPCs) to different concentrations of CBD (1 µM, 5 µM, and 10 µM).

A low-grade and persistent inflammation, which is the hallmark of obesity, requires the participation of NLRP3 and cell death. During Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, NLRP3 signaling is important for bacterial killing by macrophages in vitro but was shown to be dispensable for host protection in vivo. We hypothesized that during obesity-tuberculosis (TB) comorbidity, NLRP3 signaling might play a detrimental role by inducing excessive inflammation.

The focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is one of the most frequent glomerulopathy in the world, being considered a significative public health problem worldwide. The disease is characterized by glomerular loss mainly due to inflammation process and collagen fibers deposition. STAT-3 is a transcription factor associated with cell differentiation, migration and proliferation and in renal cells it has been related with fibrosis, acting on the progression of the lesion.

Background: Obesity perturbs endothelium integrity, leading to endothelial activation, which predisposes the release of endothelium-derived microparticles (EMP). We measured the CD31/annexin V and CD62E EMP levels to improve our understanding of their contribution to endothelial damage in children with overweight/obesity.

Subject And Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 107 children with normal weight and 35 children with overweight/obesity were evaluated.

A high caloric intake, rich in saturated fats, greatly contributes to the development of obesity, which is the leading risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2D). A persistent caloric surplus increases plasma levels of fatty acids (FAs), especially saturated ones, which were shown to negatively impact pancreatic β-cell function and survival in a process called lipotoxicity. Lipotoxicity in β-cells activates different stress pathways, culminating in β-cells dysfunction and death.

Article Synopsis
  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are undifferentiated cells found in adult tissues that show promise for treating various diseases due to their ability to renew and differentiate into different cell types while modulating immune responses.
  • This study focused on human tubal mesenchymal stem cells (htMSCs) and their effects in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model, revealing their ability to suppress the activation of dendritic cells and promote anti-inflammatory cytokine release.
  • Results indicated that htMSCs lead to milder disease symptoms, with reduced immune cell infiltration and increased levels of protective factors, suggesting their potential as a therapy for inflammatory and neurodegenerative conditions.

In type 1 diabetes (T1D) development, proinflammatory cytokines (PIC) released by immune cells lead to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in β-cells. Nonetheless, the temporality of the events triggered and the role of different ROS sources remain unclear. Isolated islets from C57BL/6J wild-type (WT), NOX1 KO and NOX2 KO mice were exposed to a PIC combination.

The pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) which is related to new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has mobilized several scientifics to explore clinical data using soft-computing approaches. In the context of machine learning, previous studies have explored supervised algorithms to predict and support diagnosis based on several clinical parameters from patients diagnosed with and without COVID-19. However, in most of them the decision is based on a "black-box" method, making it impossible to discover the variable relevance in decision making.

Atrophic maxilla rehabilitation through dental implants is always a challenging procedure. However, alternative approaches such as guided surgery and the installation of short implants are progressively supplanting more invasive bone regeneration procedures. A V-4 technique described in 2016 facilitates the installation of dental implants in patients with atrophic maxilla; however, its authors recommend incision, flap opening, and elevation of the anterior area of the maxillary sinuses.

Background/aim: Thyroid cancer is the only tumor in which age is an important prognostic factor. In papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC), 45 years of age seems to be a key point that divides adult patients into two groups, with different clinical features. The aim of the study was to perform a microarray-based analysis in two groups of patients (<45 and ≥45 years old), in order to verify the occurrence of specific copy number alterations (CNAs) that could be associated to different patient behaviors associated with age.
