Sarcopenia, a clinical syndrome primarily associated with reduced muscle mass in the elderly, has a negative impact on quality of life and survival. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)β/δ activation is a potential target for modulation of inflammation in cardiovascular disease. PPARβ/δ activation depends on the presence of a ligand, which may be pharmacological or natural, such as bioactive compounds and nutrients.
