Purpose: To evaluate whether scintigraphy with technetium-99m-labeled ceftizoxime ((99m)Tc-CFT) can differentiate mediastinitis from aseptic inflammation associated with sternotomy.
Methods: Twenty female Wistar rats were randomly distributed into four groups: S (control) -partial upper median sternotomy with no treatment; SW (control) - sternotomy and treatment of sternal wounds with bone wax; SB - sternotomy and infection with Staphylococcus aureus; SWB - sternotomy with bone wax treatment and bacterial infection. Scintigraphy with (99m)Tc-CFT was performed eight days after surgery and images were collected 210 and 360 min after infusion of the radiopharmaceutical.

Objectives: The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is increasing. We sought to compare tumor characteristics and outcomes after a liver transplant according to the cause of liver disease and ethnicity.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (292, 23%) out of all the liver transplant recipients (N=1266) at the University of Miami between 2000 and 2010.
Purpose: Post-transplant metabolic syndrome (PTMS) is associated with important causes of morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplant recipients. Our aim was to investigate predictors of PTMS in liver transplant (LT) recipients.
Methods: We randomly selected 343 adults (>18 years of age) from a large cohort of 1,262 ethnically diverse patients who received LTs during 2000-2010.
We describe the case of a 41-year-old man with congenital heart disease and infective endocarditis (IE), who presented multiple vegetations attached to the pulmonary, mitral, and aortic valves. Three valve replacements were performed, but the patient developed an abscess at the mitral-aortic intervalvular fibrosa and died due to sepsis. We briefly discuss the indications for surgery in IE, emphasizing its role in the treatment of uncontrolled infection.
