Objective: To determine whether tocilizumab improves clinical outcomes for patients with severe or critical coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19).

Design: Randomised, open label trial.

Objective: To evaluate the degree of knowledge about pain management and opioids use by professionals working at three pediatric units.

Design: This is a cross-sectional study.

Setting: This study was carried out at three pediatric units (pediatrics, intensive care unit, and oncology) of Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, which is a university hospital located in southern Brazil.

The effect of bone marrow transplantation on oxidative stress in X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy.

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, including X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD). In the present work, we evaluated lipid (malondialdehyde [MDA] content) and protein (sulfhydryl and carbonyl contents) oxidative damage parameters in plasma from X-ALD patients before and after bone marrow transplant (BMT), in order to verify if this treatment is capable to alter the oxidative parameters studied. We also evaluated the plasma concentration of hexacosanoic acid (C26:0) from X-ALD patients and correlated it with the oxidative damage parameters investigated.

Safety of general anesthesia for lumbar puncture and bone marrow aspirate/biopsy in pediatric oncology patients.

Introduction: Painful short duration procedures such as bone marrow aspiration/biopsy and the lumbar puncture with or without intrathecal chemotherapy are frequently performed during the treatment of children with cancer. This study evaluated the frequency and severity of complications of bone marrow aspiration biopsy and lumbar puncture/intrathecal chemotherapy under general anesthesia.

Patients And Methods: A prospective observational study was performed from November 2003 to August 2005.

Oral health and dental anomalies in patients treated for leukemia in childhood and adolescence.

Background: This study was conducted to evaluate oral health and dental anomalies in children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and to compare results with those of a group of healthy children matched for sex and age.

Procedure: Fifty-six children treated for ALL and 56 healthy controls were examined for dental anomalies, and data on decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) score, visible plaque (VPI), and gingival bleeding (GBI) indices, and saliva flow were collected. Mean age of all children treated for ALL was 5.

Anti-proliferative effect of the gastrin-release peptide receptor antagonist RC-3095 plus temozolomide in experimental glioblastoma models.

Malignant gliomas have a dismal prognosis despite multi-modality treatments like neurosurgical resection, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Evidence has indicated that gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) and its receptor (GRPR) play a role in the development of a variety of cancers including gliomas. In the present study, we investigated the effects of RC-3095, a selective GRPR antagonist, alone or in combination with temozolomide (TMZ), a DNA alkylating agent, in in vitro and in vivo experimental rat C6 glioma models.

[Post-treatment of Leprosy in Ceará: activity and functional limitation, safety awareness and social participation].

To characterize the functional limitation, activity limitation, risk conscience, and the social participation in people reached by hansen's disease in the post-MDT period. Cross-sectional, descriptive study, accomplished in 2006. Sixty-nine residents in Sobral that had discharge from MDT between 2003-2005 participated.

[Hansen's Disease in the municipality of Fortaleza, CE, Brazil: epidemiological and operational aspects in children under 15-years-old (1995-2006)].

This is a sectional study that aims to analyze the occurrence of Hansen's disease cases in 15 year-old minors in the Municipality of Fortaleza and notified in SINAN. The epidemiological indicators in this population show hiperendemicity. In operational terms is observed the maintenance of the service concentration in some reference units, in spite of some progress.

Influence of low-energy laser in the prevention of oral mucositis in children with cancer receiving chemotherapy.

Background: This study assessed the use of low-energy laser in the prevention or reduction of the severity of oral mucositis.

Procedure: A randomized clinical trial was carried out. Patients from 3 to 18 years of age treated with chemotherapy or hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation between May, 2003 and February, 2005 were eligible.

[Clinical features in osteosarcoma and prognostic implications].

Objective: To identify the clinical features in osteosarcoma and to investigate their influence on the prognosis of children and adolescents presenting this disease.

Material And Methods: The records of children and adolescents with osteosarcoma treated by the Bone Tumors Group of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between January 1992 and December 2001 were reviewed.

Results: Fifty consecutive patients were included in this study.

OBJECTIVE: To review the indications, main steps and complications of bone marrow transplantation in children. SOURCES: Medline-based literature review. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: We comment about the indications of autologous, allogeneic and syngeneic bone marrow transplantation, donor selections, harvest and infusion of the hematopoietic progenitor cells that will reconstitute the hematopoietic and immune systems.

[Clinical and epidemiological analysis of bone marrow transplantation in a pediatric oncology unit].

Objective: To describe the demographics and the most important acute clinical complications in patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation in the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Material And Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed including 41 patients treated between August 1997 and June 2002. Twenty patients received allogeneic transplants (AG) and 21 received autologous transplants (AT).

High-dose chemotherapy and autologous peripheral blood stem cell rescue in a patient with pleuropulmonary blastoma.

Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare and aggressive malignant tumor of the lung. Approximately 80 cases of PPB have been published, and in only three cases high-dose chemotherapy with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) was applied. A 5-year-old girl presenting with cough, fever, and shortness of breath was referred to the authors in March 1999.
