Ecomorphological and Age-Related Adaptations in the Tongues of (Spectacled Porpoise) and (Burmeister's Porpoise) (Phocoenidae: Cetacea).

Vertebrates' tongues reflect part of their adaptations to diverse feeding strategies, the types of food items they eat, and the environments where they live. Our contribution was to analyze the macro- and microscopic morphology of the tongues of two porpoise species ( and ; juveniles and adults), whose biology is little known. Macroscopic and microscopic studies (conventional histology, scanning electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and morphometry) were performed.

Glycosylation in Canine Placentas.

This article describes the carbohydrate composition of early and mature placentas from bitches, detected by lectin histochemistry. Formalin-fixed placental samples from 11 mixed-breed bitches have been assigned to the 'early' or the 'mature' placenta group, processed by the routine histological technique and labelled with a panel of 14 biotinylated lectins. The glycan distribution was almost completely preserved over pregnancy.

Bacterial Cellulose Membrane Experimentally Implanted in the Peritoneum of Wistar Rats-Inflammatory Immunoreactivity and Oxidative Stress.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has been used for various applications; however, studies investigating the immunohistochemical characteristics of the inflammatory and scarring component in BC implanted in the peritoneum in vivo have not yet been fully described. This study aimed to evaluate the systemic and organic safety of BC through oxidative stress, blood, and serum biochemical markers, as well as the late inflammatory response in rats, using histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Forty-three rats (26 males; 17 females) received BC in the peritoneal cavity (implanted group-IG), while twenty-seven rats (12 males; 15 females) served as the control (sham group-SG).

Evolution of avian foot morphology through anatomical network analysis.

Avian evolution led to morphological adaptive variations in feet. Diverse foot types are accompanied by a diverse muscle system, allowing birds to adopt different primary lifestyles, and to display various locomotor and manipulative skills. We provide insights of evolutionary and functional significance on the avian foot architecture through Anatomical Network Analysis, a methodology focused on connectivity patterns of anatomical parts.

Characterising the expression of the organic cation transporter OCT3 in cutaneous papillomas of dogs.

Background: The identification of the activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signalling pathway as a frequent molecular event in canine cutaneous papillomas (CPs) has provided the rational foundation to explore novel molecular-targeted therapies. Recent evidence indicates that metformin reduces the size of CPs in mice by inhibiting the mTOR signalling pathway. These effects require the expression of the organic cation transporter 3 (OCT3/SLC22A3), a well-known metformin uptake transporter.

Infection with different Neospora caninum strains causes differences in the glycosylation pattern in the uteri and placentae of Neospora caninum-infected heifers.

Neospora caninum is an obligate intracellular parasite that causes abortion in ruminants. Different strains produce differences in the severity of disease outcomes. These differences may cause physiological or pathological changes in cells, modifying the intercellular interactions and intracellular transport pathways that could be evidenced by identifying the terminal sugars.

Changes in Immune Response during Pig Gestation with a Focus on Cytokines.

Pigs have the highest percentage of embryonic death not associated with specific diseases of all livestock species, at 20-45%. During gestation processes, a series of complex alterations can arise, including embryonic migration and elongation, maternal immunological recognition of pregnancy, and embryonic competition for implantation sites and subsequent nutrition requirements and development. Immune cells and cytokines act as mediators between other molecules in highly complex interactions between various cell types.

Altered E-cadherin/β-catenin expression in feline cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) is the most common malignant skin tumour in cats and the nature of the molecular mechanisms involved is poorly defined. Included among the molecular mechanisms in human and canine CSCCs is altered expression of E-cadherin/β-catenin. This study aimed to explore the immunohistochemical expression pattern of E-cadherin and β-catenin in 43 samples of feline CSCC by using a tissue microarray to elucidate whether expression of these molecules is dysregulated.

Characterization of lesions of nutritional congenital goitre in cattle.

There are few studies that classify and characterize the morphometric and immunohistochemical features of goitre in bovine thyroid glands (TGs). We investigated 39 bovine TGs (fetuses [9], stillbirths [18], neonates [12]) born to dams with low T4 hormone levels and no iodine supplementation and 10 (fetuses [3], stillbirths [3], neonates [4]) born to dams with normal T4 levels and supplemented with iodine. Body weight (BW), TG weight (TGW), TGW:BW ratio and histological lesions were determined.

Determination of ptaquiloside in ten species of Pteris in northwestern Argentina.

The toxic effect of ferns of the genus of Pteris in bovines is caused by ptaquiloside, the main carcinogenic toxin. In this study, ten species of Pteris fern in different phenologic stages and plant conditions were collected in northwest Argentina. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of Pt in the recent collected samples (adults and young plants) but not in the herbarium specimens.

Ovarian changes and development of the branchial placenta occurring in Jenynsia lineata (Cyprinodontiformes, Anablepidae).

In viviparous teleosts, intraovarian gestation occurs intrafollicularly, as in poeciliids, or intraluminally, as in goodeids and anablepids. Furthermore, there are two different forms of embryonic nutrition: lecithotrophy and matrotrophy; depending on the species, these can be exclusive or coexist during gestation. In matrotrophic species, nutrients are transmitted from the mother to the embryo and are especially important in species with intraluminal gestation.

I W Rowlands, Barbara J Weir and the biology of the hystricomorph rodents.

In Brief: Current research on the genomics, ecology and reproductive biology of hystricomorph rodents relies on the pioneering studies of B J Weir and I W Rowlands. We show the enduring influence of a symposium on hystricomorph biology held 50 years ago.

Abstract: The rodent suborder Hystricomorpha comprises seven families from Africa and Asia and ten from South America, where they have undergone an extensive radiation and occupy a variety of biomes.

Hepatic hematopoiesis in the alpaca (Vicugna pacos), a species with development in hypoxic environments.

Hematopoiesis occurs in different anatomical niches throughout the life of the individual. The first hematopoietic extra-embryonic stage is replaced by a intra-embryonic stage that occurs in a region that is adjacent to the dorsal aorta. Then, the prenatal hematopoietic function is continued by the liver and spleen, and later by the bone marrow.

Decidual cells and decidualization in the carnivoran endotheliochorial placenta.

Decidualization is considered a distinctive feature of eutherian pregnancy, and has appeared during evolution along with the development of invasive forms of placentation, as the endotheliochorial placenta. Although decidualization is not massive in carnivores, as it is in most species developing hemochorial placentas, isolated or grouped cells regarded as decidual have been documented and characterized, mainly in bitches and queens. For the majority of the remaining species of the order, data in the bibliography are fragmentary.

Embryonic-placental relationship in Lagostomus maximus as compared to other hystricognath rodents and eutherian mammals.

Reproductive specializations in caviomorphs (infraorder Hystricognathi), are very peculiar within the Order Rodentia. These include long gestations, the birth of offspring with an extreme degree of precociality, and short lactation periods. This study describes the embryo-placental relationship of viable implantation sites (IS) of the plains viscacha, Lagostomus maximus, after 46 post-coital days.

Natural life cycle of (Taeniidae) in Argentina and histopathology of metacestodiasis in intermediate hosts.

Using morphological and molecular studies, the life cycle of (Cestoda: Taeniidae) was elucidated, involving subterranean rodents (Ctenomyidae) as intermediate hosts, and the lesser grison, (Mustelidae), as definitive host. Metacestodes (cysticerci and polycephalic larvae) were found mainly in the liver but also in spleen, pancreas, lungs and small intestine of 2 species of tuco-tucos ( spp.) from Chubut, Argentina.

Placental glycotype of the caviomorph rodent Lagostomus maximus and its evolution within Eutheria.

The main evolutionary milestone in the oviparity-viviparity transition is placentation. The placenta is an organ with great morphological diversity among eutherians. The expression of different glycosidic residues (Gr) in the near-term placenta constitutes its glycotype.

IGF1 gene therapy in middle-aged female rats delays reproductive senescence through its effects on hypothalamic GnRH and kisspeptin neurons.

The process of aging is the result of progressive loss of homeostasis and functional body impairment, including the central nervous system, where the hypothalamus plays a key role in regulating aging mechanisms. The consequences of aging include a chronic proinflammatory environment in the hypothalamus that leads to decreased secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and impairs kisspeptin neuron functionality. In this work, we investigated the effect of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) gene therapy on hypothalamic kisspeptin/GnRH neurons and on microglial cells, that mediate the inflammatory process related with the aging process.

Placental vascularization in middle and late gestation in the pig.

Unlabelled: The aims of this study were to determine the changes in the capillary area density in relation to fetal development, to determine immunoexpression of angiogenic factors and to compare their mRNA expression throughout pig gestation. Samples were collected from the maternal-chorioallantoic interface at days 40, 77, 85 and 114 of pregnancy for immunohistochemistry analysis and the measurement of mRNA expression of and its receptors , respectively. Morphometric measurement of blood vessels was performed.

Spontaneous embryonic death in plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus - Rodentia), a species with unique reproductive characteristics.

Spontaneous embryonic death is a conserved reproductive event in Eutherians. The macro and microscopic characteristics of this type of death are similar between the different taxa. However, in the hystricomorphic rodent plains viscacha (Lagostomus maximus) is exceptional in terms of massiveness (80% embryonic resorption).

Persistent activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin signalling pathway in cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas in cats.

Background: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) represents the most common malignant tumour of the feline skin. Emerging evidence suggests that the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signalling pathway may represent a potential target for pharmacological intervention in human and canine CSCC.

Hypothesis/objectives: The present study aimed to explore the expression pattern and status of activation of relevant signalling proteins of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway in feline CSCC.

Gill morphology and morphometry of the facultative air-breathing armoured catfish, Corydoras paleatus, in relation on aquatic respiration.

The Neotropical armoured catfish Corydoras paleatus is a facultative air-breathing teleost commonly exported as ornamental fish. In this species, air breathing enables it to survive and inhabit freshwater environments with low oxygen levels. Therefore, it is important to analyse the gills from a morphological aspect and its dimensions in relation to body mass with reference to aquatic respiration.

Photosensitization Induced by in Goats: Sequential Development of Skin Lesions.

Five adult Saanen goats received a single oral dose of containing 42.25 μg/kg rubiadin (anthraquinone) and 3 adult goats were untreated controls. All goats were exposed to sunlight and sequential ear skin biopsies were collected before treatment and at 32 hours, 3 days, 8 days, and 15 days after treatment.

Caviomorpha are an exceptional group among rodents due to their extended gestational period and the delivery of precocial offspring. Among them, Lagostomus maximus is characterized by its polyovulation, polyembryony, and the highest embryonic death known in mammals. Its chorioallantoic placenta is hemomonochorial, an ancestral character among rodents.
