Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with osteosarcopenia, and because a physical decline in patients correlates with an increased risk of morbidity, an improvement of the musculoskeletal system is expected to improve morbi-mortality. We recently uncovered that the intestinal hormone Fibroblast Growth Factor 19 (FGF19) is able to promote skeletal muscle mass and strength in rodent models, in addition to its capacity to improve glucose homeostasis. Interactions between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum, known as MAMs, are altered in the liver in obesity, which contributes to disruption of the insulin signaling pathway. In addition, the plasma level of glycine is decreased in obesity, and the decrease is strongly correlated with the severity of insulin resistance. The adiponectin receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2, are thought to transmit the insulin-sensitizing effects of adiponectin, an adipokine secreted by adipocytes. Keratinocyte growth factor (KGF, or fibroblast growth factor 7) was previously reported to enhance the synthesis of surfactant in alveolar type II cells. We investigated the possible interactions between KGF and a glucocorticoid, dexamethasone (Dex), on surfactant protein (SP) gene expression. In cultured fetal rat type II cells, KGF and Dex induced greater-than-additive stimulating effects on SP-A and SP-B expressions that were enhanced three-fold and 30-fold, respectively, but had only additive effects on SP-C expression.

In humans, the precise mechanisms of the hypolipidemic action of fenofibrate, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha agonist, remain unclear. To gain insight on these mechanisms, we measured plasma lipids levels, lipids synthesis (hepatic de novo lipogenesis and cholesterol synthesis), and mRNA concentrations in circulating mononuclear cells (RT-PCR) of hydroxymethylglutaryl (HMG)-CoA reductase, LDL receptor, LDL receptor- related protein (LRP), scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI), ABCAI, and liver X receptor (LXR)-alpha in 10 control subjects and 9 hyperlipidemic type 2 diabetic patients.
