CYP27B1 Enzyme in Psoriasis: A Preliminary Study of Immunohistochemical Observations.

Connections between vitamin D and psoriasis have been a matter of interest for the past decades, with its active metabolite, 1,25(OH) vitamin D, being valued for antiproliferative and immunomodulatory effects. However, none of vitamin D's actions could be possible without the CYP27B1 enzyme that bio-activates this metabolite of interest. In order to see if there is any link between the enzyme expression and the disease's particularities, we conducted a preliminary study that involved 11 skin biopsies of patients with mild (n = 4) or moderate to severe psoriasis (n = 7).

Osteoarthritis induces gender-related changes in the knee range of motion.

In time, osteoarthritis (OA) generates the misalignment of the affected joint structures. However, due to the nature of bipedal gait, OA in the lower limb can also cause pathological gait patterns, which can generate instability and falls, with great consequence, especially in the aged population. With goniometry used to evaluate the range of motion (ROM) of joints, we wanted to evaluate how gender impacts gait dynamics in OA patients.

Technical Performance, Overall Accuracy and Complications of EUS-Guided Interventional Procedures: A Dynamic Landscape.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) gained wide acceptance as the diagnostic and minimally invasive therapeutic approach for intra-luminal and extraluminal gastrointestinal, as well as various non-gastrointestinal lesions. Since its introduction, EUS has undergone substantial technological advances. This multi-centric study is a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent EUS for the evaluation of lesions located within the gastrointestinal tract and the proximal organs.

Clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical study of keratoacanthoma.

Keratoacanthoma (KA) is an epithelial tumor of the skin, classically considered as having a malignant transformation risk of 15%; however, many authors and the new World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of skin tumors consider KA as an incipient variant of the cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The aims of the study were to assess the clinical, histopathological (HP) and immunohistochemical (IHC) aspects of the KA and the role of these factors in malignancy occurrence. The studied group comprises 194 patients diagnosed with KA or malignant KA, hospitalized in the Clinic of Dermatology, Emergency County Hospital, Craiova, Romania, between 2006 and 2019.

Adenoid Cystic Basal Cell Carcinoma Arising in Rhinophyma.

Adenoid cystic is a rare histological subtype of basal cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common form of skin cancer is a slow-spreading tumor with local malignancy, with a high cure rate and favorable prognosis when is diagnosed in the early stages. Rhinophyma is one of the four subtypes of rosacea and it is histopathologically characterized by sebaceous glands hypertrophy.

SMAD4 and TGFβR2 expression in pancreatic ductal carcinoma.

Pancreatic ductal carcinoma is the most common type of pancreatic cancer, and currently represents the fourth cause of death by cancer, worldwide. Among classical pancreatic markers that ascertain the histopathology, new emerging targets have been proposed for both diagnostic and prognostic purposes. In the present study, utilizing a group of 28 confirmed resected pancreatic ductal carcinomas, we have assessed the immunoexpression and correlation ratios of mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 4 (Drosophila) (SMAD4)∕transforming growth factor beta receptor 2 (TGFβR2), and vimentin∕cluster of differentiation 105 (CD105).

Assessment of hormonal receptor immunoexpression and Her2 status in invasive breast cancer after conservative and radical surgery.

This study was conducted on 300 patients with infiltrative breast carcinoma, of which 112 cases underwent radical mastectomy, and 188 were conservatively operated. Forty-four patients experienced local relapses during the clinical follow-up. The immunohistochemical (IHC) study used the Labeled Streptavidin Biotin (LSAB)∕Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method, which evaluated the estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR), as well as human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her2∕neu) expressions in tumor cells.

Vertebral body clinico-morphological features following percutaneous vertebroplasty versus the conservatory approach.

Most percutaneous vertebroplasty procedures are being performed in order to relieve pain in patients with severe osteoporosis and associated stable fractures of one or more vertebral bodies. In addition, vertebroplasty is also recommended for patients suffering from post-traumatic symptoms associated with vertebral fractures, patients with large angiomas positioned inside the vertebral body, with an increased risk for collapse fracture and also patients presenting with pain associated with vertebral body metastatic disease. On another aspect, it is possible that in isolated cases, an orthopedic surgeon confronted with a vertebra plana presentation will recommend bone cement injection into the vertebral bodies adjacent to the fractured one, in order to have a better and more robust substrate for placement of screws or other fixation devices.

Advanced metastatic breast cancer in pregnancy: the imperative of physical breast examination in pregnancy.

Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer diagnosed among women; its association with pregnancy is not encountered. As childbearing age is increasing, the diagnosis of breast cancer associated pregnancy tends to be more often than years ago. Here we report a case of a 37-year-old patient, gravida 7, para 7, diagnosed at 30 weeks gestation with metastatic breast cancer.

Assessing tumor angiogenesis in colorectal cancer by quantitative contrast-enhanced endoscopic ultrasound and molecular and immunohistochemical analysis.

Background And Objectives: Data on contrast-enhanced endoscopic ultrasound (CE-EUS) for colorectal cancer (CRC) evaluation are scarce. Therefore, we aimed to assess the vascular perfusion pattern in CRC by quantitative CE-EUS and compare it to immunohistochemical and genetic markers of angiogenesis.

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of CE-EUS examinations of 42 CRC patients, before any therapy.

GPER and ERα expression in abnormal endometrial proliferations.

Unlabelled: G-protein coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER), a particular extranuclear estrogen receptor (ER), seems not to be significantly involved in normal female phenotype development but especially associated with severe genital malignancies. This study investigated the GPER expression in different types of normal and abnormal proliferative endometrium, and the correlation with the presence of ERα. GPER was much highly expressed in cytoplasm (than onto cell membrane), contrary to ERα, which was almost exclusively located in the nucleus.

Atypical Spitz Tumor - Case Report.

Atypical Spitzoid tumors represent a poorly defined and characterized category of melanocytic tumors with histologic features of both benign Spitz nevi and malignant melanomas. The group of atypical Spitz tumors represents a mixture of Spitz nevi with atypical features and Spitzoid melanomas. We report the case of an eight years old female patient, who was admitted in Dermatology Clinic Craiova for the presence of a skin tumor with 1/0.

An unusual cutaneous malignant melanoma arised de novo: a case report.

Malignant melanoma is a type of skin cancer with accelerated evolution and a high metastatic potential, thus being the most aggressive type of skin tumor. Its origin resides in the epidermal melanocytes, which multiply chaotically, therefore becoming malignant cells. The main objective of this study was represented by the clinical, histological and also immunohistochemical analysis of a peculiar case of malignant cutaneous melanoma arised de novo.

Tumor neoangiogenesis detection by confocal laser endomicroscopy and anti-CD105 antibody: Pilot study.

Aim: To evaluate neoangiogenesis in patients with colon cancer by two fluorescently labeled antibodies on fresh biopsy samples imaged with confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE).

Methods: CLE is an imaging technique for gastrointestinal endoscopy providing in vivo microscopy at subcellular resolution. An important question in validating tumor angiogenesis is what proportion of the tumor vascular network is represented by pre-existing parent tissue vessels and newly formed vessels.

Pyoderma vegetans of the posterior area of the neck: case presentation.

Pyoderma vegetans is a rare disease characterized by the presence of vegetant exudative, pustular and erythematous vesiculobullous plaque usually located in the inguinal area and axillary fold. Etiology of pyoderma vegetans is unknown but it is often associated with bacterial infections in immunocompromised patients. Main histopathological characteristics of pyoderma crops are pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia and subepidermal, intraepidermal neutrophilic or eosinophilic microabscesses.

Squamous cell carcinoma developed on chronic venous leg ulcer.

Chronic venous leg ulcers (VLU), especially long-lasting non-healing ulcers, are among the risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Malignant transformation of a VLU is a rare finding and the relative risk of carcinomatous transformation is quite low (about 5.8).

Specific features of a rare form of disseminated necrobiosis lipoidica granuloma annulare type: a case report.

We performed a retrospective study between 2010-2011, regarding disseminated GA (GAD), and the relationship between GAD and other comorbidities.

Introduction: Gastric carcinoma is one of the most common malignancies worldwide and is the second most frequent cause of cancer deaths. Several molecular factors are studied as prognostic and predictive factors for gastric cancer, VEGF and Her2 being currently in the spotlight. Actinic keratosis, considered lately as an intraepithelial squamous cell carcinoma in evolution, are powerful predictors of the risk for developing a cutaneous carcinoma and melanoma. The aims of the study were to establish the value of the histopathologic examination as a confirmation method for the actinic keratosis diagnosis, to assess the percentage of these lesions that suffer a malignant transformation, and also the frequency of the association between actinic keratosis and cutaneous carcinomas. This is a retrospective study, performed on 208 patients diagnosed with different types of cutaneous precancers, hospitalized in Dermatology Clinic of Craiova, Romania, between 2006 and 2010.
