Cost-Effectiveness of the National Diabetes Prevention Program: A Real-World, 2-Year Prospective Study.

Objective: We evaluated the real-world cost-effectiveness of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) for people with prediabetes in a large workforce with employer-sponsored health insurance.

Research Design And Methods: We performed difference-in-differences analyses using individual-level health insurance claims and survey data for 5,948 adults with prediabetes who enrolled (n = 575) or did not enroll (n = 5,373) in the NDPP to assess NDPP's effects on health economic outcomes. We assessed direct medical costs for the year before the NDPP enrollment/index date and for 2 years thereafter; EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-level questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) utility scores at baseline, 1 year, and 2 years; and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) over 2 years.

Plasma Copper and Metabolic Syndrome in Mesoamerican Children and Their Parents.

The role of copper in the etiology of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is uncertain. We evaluated associations of plasma copper concentrations with MetS and its components in a cross-sectional study of 198 children ages 7-12 years and 378 adult parents from eight Mesoamerican countries. In children, the outcome was a metabolic risk score based on waist circumference, insulin resistance, mean arterial pressure (MAP), and blood lipids.

Incidence of bloodstream infections in patients with COVID-19: a retrospective cohort study of risk factors and outcomes.

Introduction: Prior evidence found that bloodstream infections (BSIs) are common in viral respiratory infections and can lead to heightened morbidity and mortality. We described the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of BSIs in patients with COVID-19.

Methods: This was a single-center retrospective cohort study of adults consecutively admitted from March to June 2020 for COVID-19 with BSIs.

Tocilizumab: A retrospective multi-center cohort study of critically ill patients with COVID-19.

Background: Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) can have a severe presentation characterized by a dysregulated immune response requiring admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Immunomodulatory treatments like tocilizumab were found to improve inflammatory markers and lung injury over time. We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of tocilizumab treatment on critically ill patients with severe COVID-19.

Chronic urticaria and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID): an association to remember.

The patient is a 64-year-old Caucasian woman with idiopathic chronic urticaria who presented to her primary care physician's office with mucoid otitis media. Medical history was significant for hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, allergic rhinitis, pre-diabetes, gastro-oesophageal reflux, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, chronic kidney disease, diverticulosis with prior diverticulitis and history of recurrent infections. Her chronic urticaria was initially treated with antibiotics, antihistamines and oral steroids, but later she developed refractory urticaria requiring dapsone with modest improvement.

B-vitamins and metabolic syndrome in Mesoamerican children and their adult parents.

Objective: To examine the associations between vitamins of the methionine-homocysteine (Hcys) cycle (B6, B12 and folate) and Hcys with metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Mesoamerican children and their adult parents.

Design: We conducted a cross-sectional study. Exposures were plasma vitamins B6 and B12 concentrations, erythrocyte folate and plasma Hcys.
