Background: Contradictory results are reported for the role of angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL-4) in the development of cancer-cachexia and inflammation, given its importance in angiogenesis and inflammatory signaling. Our aim was to analyze the levels of ANGPTL-4 in colorectal cancer patients with a stable weight and those with cachexia in order to establish a relationship between ANGPTL-4 and the inflammatory process.
Results: Plasma and tumor levels of ANGPTL-4 were higher in CC in comparison to other groups.
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding xanthan gum to the diet of rats on the production of cytokines and pro-inflammatory factors and on tumor development in rats inoculated with Walker 256 tumor cells.
Methods: Fifty-six rats were divided into 4 groups: control diet (C), control diet with tumor (TC), xanthan gum diet (XG), xanthan gum diet with tumor (TXG).
Results: The ingestion of xanthan gum promotes changes in cytokine content: increasing IL-6 TNF-α and IL-10 in retroperitoneal adipose tissue compared to the control group; and increasing TNF-α in the mesenteric adipose tissue compared to the C and TXG groups.

Obesity is mainly caused by intake of a high-fat diet and sedentarism, and is considered a public health issue worldwide. Increased intestinal permeability may favour endotoxaemia generated by lipopolysaccharides, a substance present in the cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, and, consequently, an increase in systemic inflammation and metabolic diseases. Background: Obesity is a chronic disease defined by an excess amount of adipose tissue and presents a low-grade inflammatory state, increasing cardiovascular risk.
Objective: To assess the effect of weight loss magnitude on the inflammatory profile and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in obese adolescents engaged in interdisciplinary therapy.
Design And Patients: Seventy-seven postpubertal obese adolescents with a BMI greater than the 95th percentile (37·18 ± 5·14), of both genders and between the ages of 14 and 19 years (16·74 ± 1·59) were subjected to a 1-year period of interdisciplinary intervention (nutrition, psychology, physical exercise and clinical support).
Adiponectin and interleukin 10 (IL-10) are adipokines that are predominantly secreted by differentiated adipocytes and are involved in energy homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and the anti-inflammatory response. These two adipokines are reduced in obese subjects, which favors increased activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and leads to elevation of pro-inflammatory adipokines. Background: Environmental stress plays an important role in the development of glucose intolerance influencing lipid and glucose metabolism through sympathetic nervous system, cytokines and hormones such as glucocorticoids, catecholamines and glucagon.
