It has been hypothesized that prenatal exposure to testosterone may be associated with traits of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We conducted a population-based study of dizygotic female twins to elucidate this hypothesis, assuming that the sex of the co-twin influences the level of prenatal exposure to testosterone. We invited parents of 24,552 3- to 15-year-old twins to answer questionnaires on traits of ADHD and ASD.

Objective: We hypothesize that maternal transplacentally acquired antibodies may cause Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms years after birth, and tested the hypothesis in twins discordant for ADHD symptoms.

Method: In a pre-screened sample of 7793 same sex twin pair's (4-18 years) questionnaire data on hyperactivity and inattention was collected. Blood samples taken 5 days after birth from 190 ADHD-score discordant pairs (15% MZ) were analyzed for antibodies.

SP-D is a lectin involved in the first line of defense against microorganisms. It is primarily found in the lung but also at extrapulmonary sites and in the circulation. An immunoassay for the quantification of SP-D in serum was established and the SP-D concentration was measured in consecutive blood samples from 61 patients hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia of suspected bacterial origin.
