Despite these challenges, involving them in research is crucial to better understand and address their specific needs. However, little evidence exists regarding a tailored approach for researchers for this group considering their situation at home.

Health Mindset and One Year Outcomes in Adult Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Patients.

Background: Many patients who start peritoneal dialysis (PD) transition to hemodialysis (HD) after a PD-related complication. Patient psychological factors may influence clinical outcomes. One possible factor is health mindset, or patient belief that their health knowledge and ability can change.

Gender diversity in pediatric surgery: academic ranks and scholarly productivity amongst pediatric surgeons.

Purpose: Despite a growing number of women entering medical school, a small proportion of women pursue surgical specialties, including pediatric surgery. This multi-center study assesses gender-based differences in measures of scholarly productivity and distribution of faculty positions.

Methods: This is a retrospective web-based study of all pediatric surgeons at twelve large institutions across the United States.

Ileal lengthening through internal distraction: A novel procedure for ultrashort bowel syndrome.

Purpose: Ultrashort bowel syndrome is a rare, but morbid surgical problem without effective treatment. Recent clinical analysis has demonstrated the critical influence of ileal length on ultimate enteral autonomy. Surgical techniques to increase ileal length in nondilated bowel do not exist.

Development of a Standardized Algorithm for Management of Newly Diagnosed Anorectal Malformations.

Neonates with a new diagnosis of anorectal malformation (ARM) present a unique challenge to the clinical team. ARM is strongly associated with additional midline malformations, such as those observed in the VACTERL sequence, including vertebral, cardiac, and renal malformations. Timely assessment is necessary to identify anomalies requiring intervention and to prevent undue stress and delayed treatment.

A standardized treatment protocol for pilonidal disease can influence the health mindset of adolescents.

Purpose: Pilonidal disease (PD) significantly impacts patients' quality of life and requires regular maintenance behaviors to achieve cure. Health mindset is a psychological construct which can influence health behaviors and outcomes, with a growth mindset being associated with better outcomes than a fixed. We propose that participation in a standardized treatment protocol can affect the health mindset for adolescents with pilonidal disease.

Comorbidities are not associated with pain symptom or recurrence in patients with pilonidal disease.

Background: Comorbidities can potentially impact the presentation or outcome of patients with pilonidal disease (PD) due to poor wound healing or increased inflammatory response. We hypothesized that certain comorbidities could lead to worse pain or higher recurrence rate.

Methods: A retrospective study was performed on all PD patients treated with standardized minimally invasive protocol at our clinic 2019-2022.

Just my luck: How children's causal attributions contribute to injury prevention.

Purpose: Traumatic injury in children, particularly adolescents, is both frequently and costly. In this study, we directly examined children's causal attributions for the recent traumas and asked them to propose prevention strategies of their own. We predict that children who attribute their injuries to their own actions, rather than an external force such as luck, will be more likely to develop strategies to avoid trauma in the future.

Barriers to Family Building Among Physicians and Medical Students.

Importance: Physicians and medical students who desire to build families face significant barriers due to the structure and culture of medicine.

Objective: To understand the barriers and facilitators to family building for all people in medicine-not only individuals who can become pregnant-through an open-ended, qualitative analysis of survey responses.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This qualitative study used a survey conducted in April and May 2021 with a broad sample of physicians and medical students.

Regular epilation alone is an acceptable treatment for symptom-free pilonidal patients.

Introduction: Patients with mild pilonidal disease often experience symptom resolution without excision. We hypothesized that treating symptom-free/asymptomatic pilonidal patients with regular epilation alone had similar recurrence rate as patients who were also treated surgically.

Method: Patient data were prospectively collected 2/2019-11/2022 at our Pilonidal Clinic.

Background: Hair at the gluteal cleft plays a key role in the development and recurrence of pilonidal disease (PD). We hypothesized that more hair reduction achieved using laser could correlate with lower chance of PD recurrence.

Methods: PD patients who underwent laser epilation (LE) were categorized by Fitzpatrick skin type, hair color, and hair thickness.

Parental Health Mindset Is Related to Preoperative Perceptions of Chest Wall Anomalies.

Introduction: Mindsets of health have been linked to different outcomes for patients with both surgical and medical conditions. A "growth" mindset, in which health is defined as malleable and subject to improvement, is associated with improved attitudes and outcomes when compared to a "fixed" mindset, in which health is defined as unchangeable. In pediatric surgery, parental growth mindsets of health have been correlated with better postoperative outcomes, including lower scores of anxiety and pain perceptions, for children.

Standardized perioperative care reduces colorectal surgical site infection in children: A Western Pediatric Surgery Research Consortium multicenter analysis.

Purpose: Surgical site infection (SSI) remains a significant source of patient morbidity and resource utilization in children undergoing colorectal surgery. We examined the utility of a protocolized perioperative care bundle in reducing SSI in pediatric patients undergoing colorectal surgery.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of patients ≤18 years of age undergoing colorectal surgery at ten United States children's hospitals.

The impact of early exposure to general anesthesia on visual and neurocognitive development.

Every year millions of children are exposed to general anesthesia while undergoing surgical and diagnostic procedures. In the field of ophthalmology, 44,000 children are exposed to general anesthesia annually for strabismus surgery alone. While it is clear that general anesthesia is necessary for sedation and pain minimization during surgical procedures, the possibility of neurotoxic impairments from its exposure is of concern.

Adoption of a standardized treatment protocol for pilonidal disease leads to low recurrence.

Background: Pilonidal disease may present as acute abscesses or chronic draining sinuses. There is no standardized treatment and recurrence rates can be as high as 30%. Within our five-hospital network we have established a standardized treatment protocol including minimally invasive surgical trephination and aggressive epilation.

Burden of pilonidal disease and improvement in quality of life after treatment in adolescents.

Purpose: Pilonidal Disease (PD) affects adolescents in different aspects. We hypothesized that patients with different gender, ethnicity, and age have different quality of life (QOL) measurements which could improve with minimally invasive treatment (MIT).

Methods: 131 PD patients underwent MIT (laser epilation ± trephination) from 2019 to 2021.

Using a smartphone application maintains physical activity following pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with COPD: a randomised controlled trial.

Background: Evidence suggests that patients with COPD struggle to maintain improved physical activity (PA) after completing pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). Smartphone applications (apps) providing a comprehensive training programme have conferred healthy benefits. This study was conducted to determine whether regular usage of an app maintains PA following PR.

Smartphone-based Ecological Momentary Assessment to study "scanxiety" among Adolescent and Young Adult survivors of childhood cancer: A feasibility study.

Objective: Scan-related anxiety ("scanxiety") refers to the fear, stress, and anxiety in anticipation of tests and scans in follow-up cancer care. This study assessed the feasibility of Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) for real-world, real-time capture of scanxiety using patients' personal smartphone.

Methods: Adolescent and Young Adult survivors of childhood cancer were prompted to complete EMA surveys on a smartphone app three times per day for 11 days (33 surveys total) around their routine surveillance scans.

Adolescent Vaping-Associated Trauma in the Western United States.

Introduction: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are handheld, battery-powered vaporizing devices. It is estimated that more than 25% of youth have used these devices recreationally. While vaping-associated lung injury is an increasingly recognized risk, little is known about the risk of traumatic injuries associated with e-cigarette malfunction.

Gender-based salary differences in academic medicine: a retrospective review of data from six public medical centers in the Western USA.

Objectives: We assessed the effect of gender, rank and research productivity on compensation for faculty at academic medical centres.

Design: A web-based retrospective review of salary for professors in 2016.

Setting: Faculty from six state-run, publicly funded academic medical centres in the Western USA.

Multi-Institutional Quality Improvement Project to Minimize Opioid Prescribing in Children after Appendectomy Using NSQIP-Pediatric.

Background: There is wide variation in opioid prescribing after appendectomy in children and adolescents, with recent increases noted in opioid-related pediatric deaths from prescription and illicit opioids. The goal of this project was to minimize opioid prescribing at the time of discharge for children undergoing appendectomy by using Quality Improvement (QI) methodology.

Study Design: Children (18 years of age or less) who underwent appendectomy were evaluated from January to December 2019 using NSQIP-Pediatric at 10 children's hospitals within the Western Pediatric Surgery Research Consortium.

Premature twin neonates with a Coronavirus-19 positive mother present with an unusual pattern of intestinal ischemia.

COVID-19 infection during pregnancy is associated with premature rupture of membranes, preterm delivery, and low birth weight. It has also been associated with hypercoagulability and vasculitis in certain patients. This article reports two premature twins born from a COVID-19 mother who presented with an unusual pattern of ileal ischemia and perforation within 24 hours of each other.
